Fourtnoy, Fontus, Perry, and Ogebor is a good starting point on the interior. We'll see how Elijah Crawford and Jaylen Pray develop.

A different defense that attacks will make a lot of difference.

This would be a huge pickup in the sense of senior leadership. He was a huge culture guy (team captain as well I believe) at Maryland and won some Big10 award for service as well. Plug and play guy that has been battle tested in the Big10. He won’t put up huge numbers but is exactly what we need with a plethora of young D linemen on the roster.

A 300 pound senior defensive tackle with 36 games of experience in the Big Ten has value no matter his stats. He did have something of a breakout last season, with 4.5 TFL and 2 sacks. He never recorded a stat in either category previously.

It wasn't like Maryland was any good last season, though their defense was middle of the road and their offense was terrible. Among their defenders, Fontus was tied for sixth in tackles for loss and tied for third in sacks.

Most of the TFL from Maryland came from the edge and LB, with a DB slipping in there at 3rd. I watched more snaps of Maryland football the last five minutes than during the entire season, so I don't have a strong opinion on Fontus.

But it looks like Maryland played with a rotation of three space eaters at defensive tackle and expected everybody else to make the plays. This guy could play the same role for us easily, or even continue to improve and work his way to being a reliable starter.

The Syracuse Orange continue to add to the defensive line through the transfer portal. Maryland defensive lineman Dillan Fontus has committed to the Orange, according to Neil Adler from Inside the Loud House. The Averne, New York native will have one year of eligibility left.
Fontus set career highs in his 2025 season with Maryland. He totaled 27 tackles with one sack. His 3.5 tackles for loss tied him for sixth on the team. Additionally, Fontus was the inaugural winner of the Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award, which recognized his community service contributions that align with Jackie Robinson’s legacy.
