DL/RB Josh Hough in the portal

Well, if one is expecting him to contribute as a DT next season, it's a disappointment. One can only guess that they have some DT's coming off the portal.
You had an unreasonable expectation. Lightly recruited Rb coming off a knee injury is supposed to come in and play a D1 nose tackle in this system because he ballooned up? That’s not how this works. It would take a spectacular player to pull that off.

Good young man. Great family. I assume the coaching staff was honest about his future here and he really wants to find a place he can get significant playing time.

I wish him the best. Kill it Josh!

For the love of god whyyy

All it takes is for one active father on the twitter/boards and people irrationally love the player. It’s crazy.

If a parent or relative post on this forum a surprisingly high percentage of posters throw all rational and objectivity out the window towards that player. It would make a good case study.

A parent posting on this site isn't a requirement for posters to throw all rational objectivity out the window.

Thank you, we're quite good at that on our own!

But it does tend to lead some to have favorites, and to treat the parents like celebrities. For the baby making.

Unbelievably ridiculous expectations put on him by the posters here.

I’d say it was more hopes than expectations.

Kid was a bruiser who was also surprisingly nimble (relatively speaking) and fast (ditto) for such a big dude.

While his HS comp level wasn’t all that high, he put up video game numbers on the regular, and outran everybody on the field fairly often.
Which, again, is hella impressive for such a large kid.

People were hopeful he’d be our version of AJ Dillon.

Alas, the horrific knee injury seemingly ended any chance at that, and I can only assume Dino had “the talk” with him recently.

Here’s hoping he gets fully healthy, and kills it wherever he ends up.

This board is the only place that considered him a top recruit.
That’s not true and quite frankly this position that you and a few others are taking that he was an afterthought recruit or “lightly recruited” is revisionist history. He was offered by both us, Pitt and Kentucky and committed here relatively early in the cycle (April 2020). I’m pretty sure there were other P5’s that came after him after that that were never documented. He was PA player of the year for his class and prior to the injury his film showed him to be exceedingly nimble for his size. People had a right to be excited about him as a recruit.

Now if you want to say people put unrealistic expectations on him after the injury fair and fine. But let’s not downplay how he appeared as a recruit.

I wonder if the kid wasn't a fan of the shift to DL.

But regardless, too bad it didn't work out, best of luck to the Hough's.

Not sure but for whatever reason after the injury it never seemed he would be physically able to play anywhere. Conditioning was definitely a major issue.

Best of luck.

Could have developed here. Unfortunately, he was another player built up on unrealistic expectations because of family presence on the board.
This is revisionist history. His father's presence on here wasn't where the initial expectations came from - that was film and measurables. And, the injury is the reason the expectations weren't met. He went from a workout warrior, large, fast RB to a DL rehabbing from a major injury and buried on the depth chart. If he never got hurt, he probably was our regular FB after Rhino went down. You can't just look at where he was coming in and where he is leaving and make an assessment on the board's expectations. What happened in between is pretty important.

My thoughts as well. I was certainly hopeful that Josh would help us, and grateful he chose SU over our peers. I put in a "few" votes for him and would do it again. I don't get the negative fan comments about him. Not everything works out and injuries change lives. Best wishes to Josh and his family. I'll be cheering for him no matter where he ends up.

I thought I remembered some of the respected insiders suggesting he looked good and maybe had a chance to get on field situationally before the injury. That probably raised some expectations. I hate that it didn't work out. I was intrigued by a big bruiser RB.

in no way am i about to equate Josh Hough with Warren Sapp, but Sapp was recruited as an RB but grew into a DT. Hough's knee injury may be too much, his overall fitness may be lacking, the SU system may not fit, who knows. Privately, i held out hope that he would become the run stuffing DT that i believe we lack

I never said he was "lightly recruited." I said he wasn't a top recruit, and the recruiting services, for what they're worth, agreed with that. Also, he was PA player of the year for his class because the board rigged the vote.

Regarding his HS tape, I never saw what people were so excited about. But that's just fully my opinion, not some agenda.

It's pretty clear from Rhino's injury that a large human leading the way for Tucker really improved our run game. Hough's injury removed him as the backup for Rhino that I think Josh could have been. SU has had many potent TE's and FB's over time and I had hoped to add him to that list. I liked his story and am saddened he won't be in orange.

Also, though the board's assistance may have been helpful in the voting, it's only one of the criteria for selection as Mr. Pennsylvania. Josh brought his own resume to the vote and should be very proud of his accomplishments. His yards per carry was especially impressive. The vote was just frosting.

JMHO

Even if he wasn't going to be our starting RB i was hoping he could play Rhinos roll as a super athletic big body who could block, catch a couple balls sometimes and also would add to what Rhino didn't have which is a much better ability to run the ball. He could have added some more thunder to the lightning we have. If he hadn't got injured I think he may have seen the field a ton this year.

Other teams were recruiting him as a DL as well and he played DE in high school as well. He could have been good there as well but i'm guessing the injury is pretty significantly hurting his abilities that we may have told him his likelihood of playing RB is non existant because of the injury and his size currently and the likelihood he even would play DL here at this point was not great because of his injury. I'm guessing he's looking for a shot somewhere else, maybe a lower level to get on the field.

Bummer for him and for Syracuse. Good luck Josh!
