This kid is ridiculously good and they are out there and they will have money to get guys like this
way premature, do you know our complete roster and schedule next year. I can make a prediction then. And not 20 wins NIT better...
It is a tough one. Coach P lost too much of the fan base over time. But it was still a .500 team when he left... which in football terms is like being a bubble team (IMO). It was GERG that dropped an anvil on the program by trying to force the existing players to run his offense, rather than what they were good at and then being horrible. Marrone brought us back to Coach P at the end level, then Shafer went back down. Dino was up and down, ultimately fairly close to .500 overall. Fran has a vision of how to be elite... rather than just a bowl team.Back in the late 90s, I did a project at a site in NJ (near the Meadowlands). In a conversation with a guy who worked there for years, I mentioned that I'd graduated from Syracuse. He was all excited to talk about Syracuse football, how good they were, and he was hoping his kid could get a football scholarship offer there. By 2006, NOBODY thought highly of Syracuse football - it was a dead program. It took 6,7 years - at most - to completely destroy a good reputation in the northeast.
Basketball started from an even better spot from a brand perspective - but how long has it been since Syracuse basketball has been relevant nationally? Not "sneak in to the NCAA tournament" relevant - good enough to have legit Final Four aspirations. There's probably 20 teams in that category any given year.
The thing that worries me the most is I don't feel any sense of urgency from the University...its like they think the basketball brand can withstand numerous bad years in a row and recover. I'm not sure that's the case...and we're close to being DePaul levels of irrelevant already.
Yeah, I don't like being a doomer but I've been hearing the next year is our year for last 10. Trust is long gone and it's going to take some significant change to reestablish that. I heard last season A LOT that there were going to be wholesale changes to the roster and the team would be much better off once Red gets his guys. This season that turned into, "well, in reality we didn't have the NIL to compete for talent, but NEXT YEAR, whooo boy."I don't trust the current coaching staff right now in regards to evaluation, period.

He’s had some bad games, but I don’t think Eddie has been a bust. I think he’s given us exactly what we should have expected, given his 4 year track record. And he spent most of it on one person who has been a bust.
Oof that thread is a tough read. I think humility is in short supply around these parts.Yep, I just keep remember this post from the offseason when it comes to the future.
I'm supposed to think this staff thought this year's team was gonna be good...but next year will be different.

Are we done with adding players for 2024-25?
Agument is that there will be some improvement in at least some of the five returnees and that Lampkin + Davis + Carlos + Freeman + Moore > Hima + Mintz + Taylor + Copeland + Brown + Carey There is no one on the team that has more talent or is better than Judah or Maliq. I get the whole is...syracusefan.com
I don’t think he’s been a bust, but when your backup and the guy you replaced was more effective than you in the most marquee game of the year it’s clear the staff misjudged his abilities compared to others. I would rather have McLeod/Brown and a pg than what we have now. Don’t get me wrong center is important, but pgs win in college. He’s had some bad games, but I don’t think Eddie has been a bust. His numbers are very similar to last season. A smidge less scoring, but a bit better rebounding.

The issue is that it seems the staff expected a lot more out of Lampkin. And that’s on them.
I think McLeod is an awful basketball player and I’ve been saying it since last season.I don’t think he’s been a bust, but when your backup and the guy you replaced was more effective than you in the most marquee game of the year it’s clear the staff misjudged his abilities compared to others. You won't find me defending McLeods play. To me it's all about Lampkin. He wasn't ever going to be a savior for us. Brown, 10mpg of Mcleod scaring people inside plus a pg would have been a better outcome.I think McLeod is an awful basketball player and I’ve been saying it since last season.
I didn’t watch last night, but I see that he had 2 boards and 1 block in 22 minutes. It’s great that he hit 4 shots but the rest of his stat line is terrible. And apparently he was playing when Duke boat raced us in the second half. So how good was his game really?
The staff misjudged Lampkin and McCleod AND almost every other player on the team. The roster is a cluster and they own.
I know, I know, BUT NIL. I’ll spare the usual suspects the reply.
There's a locked 86 page thread on Maliq transferring to Duke with lots of great posts with receipts.Yep, I just keep remember this post from the offseason when it comes to the future.

The guy gives up more points on defense than he scores, plus smart teams will put him in a pick and roll situation as they know he won't come out on the defender which has led to several open jump shots. How many bunnies has he missed, sorry but he's a bust IMO considering how much money and other things he's gotten. He’s had some bad games, but I don’t think Eddie has been a bust. That’s fine. I’m just saying that he’s the same player as he’s been. So if he’s a “bust” that’s on Autry for signing him.The guy gives up more points on defense than he scores, plus smart teams will put him in a pick and roll situation as they know he won't come out on the defender which has led to several open jump shots. i think donnies best position is the 3 ...hes too thin to guard players in the post even though he does rebound well...hes a great shooterAs it pertains to making the NCAAT (at any seeding), I don't think it can happen. I don't see anything in Red's coaching to project that we would do that.
Also, while I like a few of the potential guys that can return, we are redundant at a ton of positions.
Sadiq looks like a solid piece. But he won't be elite, elite. And if Donnie comes back, they play the same position. As does Petar. I guess Donnie could bump to the 3, but...
That brings us to the off guard: JJ, Kiyan and Choppa (and Cuffe pending who he is paired with). I guess some of those guys could flex to the three, but my god the D would be awful.
We have the Aussie and maybe Cuffe, for lead guard in conjunction with JJ flexing to it or splitting the ball handling.
So basically we're woefully short at PG and center, again, this year, as of now. Can we still get a real PG? Sure. Center? Sure.
And you cannot be sooooo reliant on freshman. I love our high school haul this year. I really do. But expecting these guys to be elite from the jump just will not happen. It's a recipe for disaster. Combine that with Red not proving any coaching acumen at a high level on O or D and I'd guess the best case is probably an above .500 record, but nowhere near close enough for the NCAAT.
I dunno. I really need to see it to believe it at this point. We can beat the BCs and Miamis this year or whatever, but our best win, I believe, is Notre Dame who is 93 in NET and 83 in KenPom. We're miles away.
Donnie might be a “great shooter” in your eyes from 10-14’ out, but certainly not from three point range which you need in todays game out of your 3 position to stretch the floor. I know the “stats” show he is a 33% shooter from 3 on a small sample size, but that includes going 6-8 against UAlbany and Bucknell. Against everyone else he is 6-28 (21%). That’s not a great shooter unfortunately.i think donnies best position is the 3 ...hes too thin to guard players in the post even though he does rebound well...hes a great shooter

so we just, solved the funding problem in a week?I can do that. Now, I haven't seen anything from Red other than high school recruiting but to be fair, I will give it a go. First, while Red and Griff were on the staff during the slide, JB was the coach. And he wanted guys to play his zone. They had to recruit for it. I saw Bell at the Hall of Fame classic and reported back on this site that this kid couldn't stay in front of me and I'm in my 60's. JB didn't care because he could stick him in his zone and he was long. Converting to a man to man defense was going to take time. And with a team of nitwits, we still won 19 games. Then came the portal. Which the school was not prepared for. Just as it wasn't really prepared for NIL. Last year, the coaches were coaching and they were not ready for the portal. Didn't have the money and didn't know who was going to come available. That is different today. I have been told, and this has nothing to do with my efforts regarding AW, that we are doing very well with NIL. And we now have a GM. Klein spends his time doing a couple of things. One, watching kids that will probably be in the portal. And talking to player reps. We know who is going to be in the portal. And have an idea of what they are going to cost. You never know for sure because someone can come up with a stupid money offer but the point is that we are miles ahead of where we were last year at this time. Better players and players that really fit will give us an idea what kind of coach Red is.
If anyone can tell me what our "fit" or system is that would be awesome? I'm guessing potential transfers will want that answer.I can do that. The Head coach is spending his time coaching. In order to stay in front of the portal, you need someone whose whole job is to fund raise and stay up to date on players from all over the country. Also, JJ and Bell were not the top NIL guy for us. We just couldn't get rid of everyone.
what kind of coach Red is.
Are you a potential transfer. I would bet that the kids we recruit will know their role and what our fit is.If anyone can tell me what our "fit" or system is that would be awesome? I'm guessing potential transfers will want that answer.
It's even more concerning that Red has less on his plate and this is what we're seeing on the court...
Who said that? Did I say that? Nope. I didn't. There has been a lot of work, a lot of hard work, that has been done behind the scenes. Just because no one has bothered to tell you about any of it, doesn't mean that work has not been done.so we just, solved the funding problem in a week?
Uh okayWho said that? Did I say that? Nope. I didn't. There has been a lot of work, a lot of hard work, that has been done behind the scenes. Maybe you should have been called.
You don't want me Dash, but it's a lifelong dream! However, you have to admit we have zero identity/system. I acknowledge that Red and the assistants will sell transfers on a role. I don't know what roles we have on our team. Are you a potential transfer. I would bet that the kids we recruit will know their role and what our fit is.
I don't know if Red has the chops to be a successful Head coach. I do know that the work has been done to get us competitive in the NIL world.Uh okay
