Does anyone have the courage to come up with an argument on how next year is better?

Back in the late 90s, I did a project at a site in NJ (near the Meadowlands). In a conversation with a guy who worked there for years, I mentioned that I'd graduated from Syracuse. He was all excited to talk about Syracuse football, how good they were, and he was hoping his kid could get a football scholarship offer there. By 2006, NOBODY thought highly of Syracuse football - it was a dead program. It took 6,7 years - at most - to completely destroy a good reputation in the northeast.

Basketball started from an even better spot from a brand perspective - but how long has it been since Syracuse basketball has been relevant nationally? Not "sneak in to the NCAA tournament" relevant - good enough to have legit Final Four aspirations. There's probably 20 teams in that category any given year.

The thing that worries me the most is I don't feel any sense of urgency from the University...its like they think the basketball brand can withstand numerous bad years in a row and recover. I'm not sure that's the case...and we're close to being DePaul levels of irrelevant already.
It is a tough one. Coach P lost too much of the fan base over time. But it was still a .500 team when he left... which in football terms is like being a bubble team (IMO). It was GERG that dropped an anvil on the program by trying to force the existing players to run his offense, rather than what they were good at and then being horrible. Marrone brought us back to Coach P at the end level, then Shafer went back down. Dino was up and down, ultimately fairly close to .500 overall. Fran has a vision of how to be elite... rather than just a bowl team.

JB ran it a little more to the ground by dropping us down at/below a bubble team. I think some of our best teams under JB might have lost last night. We lost no shortage of home games to top 5 programs throughout his career. Losing to Duke, this Duke team, is nothing to be ashamed about. Any more than losing to Georgetown with Ewing, etc.

Red has the potential to be a GERG... or he has the potential to be us back to being a bubble team. It is the limited upside that probably makes things worse... there is no "feel" that Red can make us elite again. Methinks that to be elite you need to do something very good... so good that the opponent knows what you are going to do, but you just do it too good. Everyone knew we were going to be 2-3 zone, but few teams had the combination of talent and coaching to defeat it. The difference is that when we were recruiting athletes for the zone, we forced teams to beat us at a game we were trying to dictate. Occasionally, some backup guard would get hot from 3 and upset us. Occasionally, we would run into teams that could dictate their will by too much talent to care about what defense we were playing. But, by and large, teams had to play good games to beat the zone.

So I think we need an identity again. If it is going back to the 2-3 zone so be it. If it is playing 10 players and pressing the whole game.. so be it. If it is some sort of offensive scheme that other teams are not used to.. so be it. SOMETHING. And then recruit/portal to fit that system. Red does not seem to have a thing. So who knows if the pieces he is getting will fit into his non-existent system. If we knew the system, we might be able to think positively that things are moving in the right direction.

The same folks that said "trust us, the coaches say Carlos is a stud" now telling us "trust us, the coaches say (insert name) is a stud"

I don't trust the current coaching staff right now in regards to evaluation, period.

They are gonna have to show me.

Otherwise, I'll have to look at the hated numbers like Fly Rodder does above.
Numbers suggested the current team would not be good and we were berated all offseason.

Yeah, I don't like being a doomer but I've been hearing the next year is our year for last 10. Trust is long gone and it's going to take some significant change to reestablish that. I heard last season A LOT that there were going to be wholesale changes to the roster and the team would be much better off once Red gets his guys. This season that turned into, "well, in reality we didn't have the NIL to compete for talent, but NEXT YEAR, whooo boy."

Yep, I just keep remember this post from the offseason when it comes to the future.

I'm supposed to think this staff thought this year's team was gonna be good...but next year will be different.

And he spent most of it on one person who has been a bust.
He’s had some bad games, but I don’t think Eddie has been a bust. I think he’s given us exactly what we should have expected, given his 4 year track record.

His numbers are very similar to last season. A smidge less scoring, but a bit better rebounding.

The issue is that it seems the staff expected a lot more out of Lampkin. And that’s on them.

Oof that thread is a tough read. I think humility is in short supply around these parts.

I don’t think he’s been a bust, but when your backup and the guy you replaced was more effective than you in the most marquee game of the year it’s clear the staff misjudged his abilities compared to others. I would rather have McLeod/Brown and a pg than what we have now. Don’t get me wrong center is important, but pgs win in college.

I think McLeod is an awful basketball player and I’ve been saying it since last season.

I didn’t watch last night, but I see that he had 2 boards and 1 block in 22 minutes. It’s great that he hit 4 shots but the rest of his stat line is terrible. And apparently he was playing when Duke boat raced us in the second half. So how good was his game really?

The staff misjudged Lampkin and McCleod AND almost every other player on the team. The roster is a cluster and they own.

I know, I know, BUT NIL. I’ll spare the usual suspects the reply.

You won't find me defending McLeods play. To me it's all about Lampkin. He wasn't ever going to be a savior for us. Brown, 10mpg of Mcleod scaring people inside plus a pg would have been a better outcome.

To your point none of the pieces fit and the talent eval may even be worse.

There's a locked 86 page thread on Maliq transferring to Duke with lots of great posts with receipts.

The guy gives up more points on defense than he scores, plus smart teams will put him in a pick and roll situation as they know he won't come out on the defender which has led to several open jump shots. How many bunnies has he missed, sorry but he's a bust IMO considering how much money and other things he's gotten.
