Donnie Done For Season

i know some people in here have said other wise , but to my knowledge (and i hear a lot from the players and the staff). i have direct sources to both. coaches say he will be back but the players say he’s out.

my bet always go with the dudes that live with the kid.
That sucks. If this is true, I worry that it’s about a lack of confidence in Red’s coaching ability and/or ability to construct a competitive roster. I still think the jury is out on Red and I’m willing to see how the last few weeks of the season go, but I fear the narrative about him is baked, and we’re gonna struggle in the portal because of it. Maybe Alex Kline and Melo can boost our NIL and identify quality portal guys who won’t break the bank. Who knows.

If we fired Red and hired Bryan Hodgson, who was Donnie’s main recruiter at Bama, I wonder if Donnie would consider staying.

Who cares. Seriously if the kid wants out he's out. No sense in building a team of kids who only chase money. It's not sustainable. FSU proved that in football.

Or the (largely) underachieving UK teams of the Calipari era.

We all would love to see Donnie back next year but just like with Maliq, I would understand if he left for a much better and stable program topped off with a better NIL deal.

The only how I see Donnie staying is a competitive NIL, and the GM and Red being able to convince him that they have learned from this season’s portal mistakes and will be better and have the resources to bring in high level transfers. Melo can greatly influence Donnie’s decision to stay by letting Donnie know that he will be around and will work with him on his game.

Well said. This is why I think Kiyan is such a wildcard next year.

So the crazy part is what happens when an 18 year old worth tens of millions himself is in the locker room. Then you got his dad a legend in the area who can call anyone in the basketball world and make something happen if he chooses to go that path. I don't think anyone knows right now.

Building the core around Kiyan and Sadiq off the court is the key, then getting the talent upgrades on the court and then keeping that group together is what a rebuild looks like. Let's not worry about the on court production for 2-3 18 year old's just yet, whatever they can give us is a bonus.

We need a new core of committed guys that are all bought in, that has been a major issues the last few years. And if it doesn't come together next year with Autry then it has to the next year with someone else coaching.

Bingo which is why it's nothing but crazy talk about firing Red after this season

Understand him leaving to another school, yes. Would be very disappointed, also yes. Have we lost guys to other schools that we wanted to keep that we got out of High School, yes. But Autry needs to reverse this trend. As you mentioned, a stable program. Keeping our eligible guys, is a start to stabilizing. I think Autry’s best path to success is keeping roster turnover as limited as possible. We saw last November with a very new roster that we simply couldn’t get the team ready and prepared for the season. Understand the NIL world is different, we can’t be surprised to lose guys to the portal. But we got to keep turnover as limited as possible for the near term with Autry as coach. He needs continuity with his players to get better and more comfortable as a new head coach.

Yes...need a committed team.
But that raises a bigger question: what does Syracuse basketball stand for?

Right now...the answer seems to be "nothing."
Defense is rarely there and the offensive scheme sees undefinable.

The Orange need to build a culture.
How about an all-in team that never quits...plays lockdown defense and doesn't take bad shots?

Whatever the details...it needs to be built.
Players need something to commit to.
(Forgive the grammar).

The decision to shut down Donnie Freeman for the rest of this season came after various conversations with various people, Syracuse coach Adrian Autry said Monday morning.

Freeman will have what Autry described as a “foot procedure” that will effectively end his freshman season at SU.

“He consulted with his family, he consulted with us, our medical staff,” Autry said. “We had to get some other opinions. Once we gathered all the information, you know, we thought that was the best route for him to go, to move along with the procedure and get himself ready for his future.”

Autry attributed the delay from the time of the injury to the time that a decision was made to shut him down to seeing if the foot would heal sufficiently without the medical procedure.

“We were trying to see if that was an option and seeing what some people thought,” Autry said. “He was patient. Obviously, he wanted to play. He’s a competitor. But for his future it was best that he do this procedure.”

Yes exactly. All the more reason to clean house and start fresh next year. It's pretty clear that Autry will be coming back so he gets one more year to try to establish something different than his first 2 years with a new core of players.

This year we have 3 starters that just were complete busts and the team captain was down 7 games. Freeman, JC, Bell did not play even half the season in their expected roles. Eddie and JJ are the only one's that are actually still playing mostly within their roles.

And yes that's on Autry and staff before I get beat up.

If it were me I'd toss out every player that has been part of these inconsistent recent seasons. Really Petar is the only one I think is valuable for the long term. Autry better start tossing these guys or else he's going to get tossed out with them after next season...

Is there more? I mean Donna is really grasping at trying to make people care about Cuse hoops this year. This seems like all stuff we knew or just common sense...Not that I expect Autry to do a tell all but is there nothing even remotely new?

If you keep Red, make sure, that you keep Freeman, Moore, and Peter, plus the youngsters coming in, get a good center, and point guard.
Play a lot of guys, and keep everyone fresh, switch defenses, and find a coach who can teach some kind of offense.

Earlier in the week, posters were questioning why Donnie didn't have surgery immediately.

Now they have their answer.

The ACC has media availability for all the coaches every Monday (except for coaches playing Monday night). Red must have clarified Donnie's situation today.

Years ago, the ACC used to stream the conference call on YouTube for the public to watch, but them days are gone.

Wondering:
• If the nature of the injury might suppress the amount$ of offers from poaching programs. If this type of injury, even after surgery, is something that could still be a problem later.
• If he suffered from this in some degree all year, and that hampered his lateral movement and associated defense.
• Maybe both of those factors make it easier for us to put up a competitive ‘bid’ for hs services next year.
• Hogsdon…. Might be the best case scenario on multiple fronts. But, I expect we will again be late on a move, by years.

Syracuse is in such a weird, uncomfortable & bizarre place right now in the college basketball world. I shouldn’t be surprised by it, but I still am.
It’s a classic case of hanging on to the past for too long and failing to proactively adapt. Ultimately the hole you have to climb out of gets deeper and you need stronger, brighter minds with a fresh perspective to get you out of the hole that was dug.

The bigger problem is I don’t think many people at the school or its fans even realize the program is sitting in a deep hole.

“For his future”…..wow. I’d expect Red to say, “it was best to get him ready for next season”.

I don’t think it could be more blunt than that.

We’ve had 5000 people attend games this year and go after local media for treating Red with kid gloves. The fans are not in denial.

I will say at least this time the coaching staff is going in eyes wide open compared to similar situations in the past.

I think a randomly generated team with our incoming freshman and 2 mil or whatever NIL for vet transfer newcomers is probably better than trying to bid anyone back.

Transfer or stay Freeman is a big loser regardless. He was on every first round mock a year ago. It's becoming a pattern see Judah the year before hard to blame him if he moves on.

He also wasn't very good. Yes he could bang inside and get points due to talent but his skill worked against him bricking all the 3s.

Reminds me of Jayden McDaniels and that UW team that fell apart although they had 10x the talent we do.

I would say the fan base in general has been antsy since 2016-2017 after the final four where we just had our 3rd straight season of a mediocre regular season without much time spent in the top 25 in January and February. Fans stood by because we were still competitive, recruited well, and also you never knew when it would be our last time seeing Boeheim on the sideline. Each year, interest continued to fade. Now we are at a point where the majority of the fan base is the “I guess I root for Syracuse, maybe we’ll go to the game, who’s on the team, who coaches?” “I remember”. We used to have a majority of our fan base engaged, went to all games that were in driving distance if we were not in Syracuse, and followed the team and knew all the players. The fact that we still draw crowds that can fill a good portion of the lower level for games shows just how big we were. Our recent seasons are rebuilding seasons on top of rebuilding seasons. The majority of the fan base isn’t in denial, they’re just not engaged even close to the levels they used to be. They skipped the denialism stage or went through it all ready.
