Donnie Freeman injures foot

Not to speak for Phil, but there's been a strong undercurrent here of "woe is us!" when it comes to NIL. In fact that seems to be the #1 excuse from some quarters as to why this season is a mess.

Unless someone has tangible evidence that our NIL is set to double this offseason, I don't think it's unreasonable to doubt that we're going to add 3 high-level portal pieces.

And by high-level I don't mean going back to fish in the CAA waters.

Regardless of how many quality players we sign this summer, do we have any confidence at all that Autry can coach at a high level?

He can guard the three and he’s a much better ball handler than Donnie. You just play with three forwards and no center. Teams have been doing that for years.

One of Boeheim's innovations was that much of the time, he played 3 forwards, a PG and C. At least one had to be able to handle the ball, and 2 of them had to be able to shoot threes. But we ran that kind of line up a lot.

Remember when we played guys like Kueth Duany, Jason Cipolla, Josh Pace, Tyus Battle, Mike Gbinije, Dave Johnson, Marius Janulis and all sorts of guys like that for size at the top of the zone. In honesty, those guys were more forward than guard. He even did it with Raf Addison his senior year.

How are the Red loyalists signing off on the Indiana plan (big NIL) for two years worth of Melo money? That is what we have coming our way.

It's pretty obvious this will come with strings attached. We already had daddy ball. Will this be labeled legacy ball? I feel bad for Kiyan.

Will Melo fund a roster that has Kiyan playing spot duty and very limited minutes? And all parties will be happy?
I have my doubts this is gonna work.

The ball handling and turnovers are really tough to understand. All our guys handle the ball like they’re 7 footers.

All I can think is this year the reason we turnover the ball in game so much is because we play lazy defense in practice.

If our squad this year was Practicing against Judah, Maliq, and even Q they’d be a hell of a lot better taking care of the ball in games. I’m not saying they didn’t have their problems but they were always looking to pick pockets and now we’re like 250th in turnovers .

No, but at least Saturday was a positive outing and they looked prepared and motivated

Agree with that. Solid effort. Would have been nice if he played Moore after that first 5 minutes. If you want to keep a kid engaged, they have to go back in before the next game.

donnie and sadiq cannot be on the same court together :/

Donnie should go to one of those big man camps this summer. He needs to think of himself as a big, not a small forward. He'll develop those skills over time. But as Boehem once told Derrick Coleman, "Rebounding is going to earn you a lot of money one day."

I believe that Fennel will start from Day 1
JJ at the 2
Donnie at the 3
Sad at the 4
Portal 5
If we rely on Fennel as the starting PG next year then no way in hell is Autry coaching a year 4 (he should be out this year though).

Why do people say this? Ridiculous. There aren’t two people on this years team who should be on the court together
agreed. the main reasoning is neither are a 5 so you’d have to play 3 and 4. in this day and age you can’t have ur 3 AND ur 4 kit be able to shoot from the arc. you can’t.

We'd dunk too much?

We'd have the same type of problems as Duke does this year with lots of confusing interchangeable parts?

duke also has 5+ very capabale 3 point shooters.

our offense will only get worse if we role both those guys out next year. you’d have 3 guys on the court who can’t shoot well.

I think Freeman can shoot the ball pretty well - he's working with some pretty decent form. Seemed to hit the straight on three at a relatively high clip.

Who knows who will be back, but next year I would think that JJ, Moore and Freeman all should be good for 33-35% - not great, but serviceable.

If we get a PG in the portal, it has to be a guy who is really good, can make 3's at a high rate (35%+), beat the press, and generate assists in the half court.

Absent that, we would not really have enough 3 point shooting. If those 3 guys were the complimentary shooters, they would be fine in that role. But none are a lead dog.

I bet Donnie gets back to his apartment and can't wait to that boot off. Wiggle his toes while he checks to see if this month's NIL payment has hit

They're both 4's. You can do that, but one has to be a legit threat from three (ideally, Freeman).

And if you play them together you almost certainly have to have another big; you can't play 3 guards when you play Freeman and Sadiq together, unless we were playing a mid-major in the early season. Because it looks like too little interior defense and rebounding to me.

So, you have to have a pair of guards who can also hit 3's and/or Petar as a stretch five.

I hope DF heals up and comes back stronger than ever. Wish he had more games under his belt this season.

He needs to work out against NBA guys with some professional trainer this summer.
People hated me for saying it, but he was way too soft. Doesn't have strong hands. Not tough enough. Remember, advanced stats say he was only the 7th best defender out of 10 guys on a really bad defensive team, despite his rebounding numbers.
