Don't just look at 0-4

This game smells of a let down. We’re coming off the high of a big win, going up against team that we’re better than and probably should win, but that team is struggling and is in desperate need of a win. So being the kind hearted ACC rivals that we are, we come out flat and let them stomp us.
I’ve seen this Syracuse Football movie before, and I don’t like it.
My gut feeling for this game is not good. I just feel like we have never played well in Doak. I feel like they have played well enough to win some games this year and they just might put it together this week. IDK - I hope I am wrong! I think it is just the fact I have been a fan of the program since GROB and it really has conditioned me to expect the worse. If they win this game... that will tell me what kind of team we are. If we win here then we are for sure bowling and possibly exceeding the bare minimum of bowling.

Yep well said you hit on every point in my mind. Not expecting a win in that environment with their backs very much against the wall along with our inconsistent qb play.

Not worried about the d as they’ll do well and keep it close just don’t think even with Tucker we can win in that heat with our qb position in flux.

I will say this, Shrader has his chance to hit the big time this weekend on this stage and if he can do it with a winning performance and shut down the doubters like me, as well as the unfair critics all over the board here, well that would be awesome and something special for all of us.

Let’s hope we’re surprised come Saturday night. Not expecting that but wouldn’t that be nice?!

I wont be surprised, I think we win. The game is not determined by the # of stars you had next to your name. We are better then them this year.

In a year where the world has turned around, see all the young guns at the Ryder Cup. All the young newcomers were the big difference after years of futility. Maybe this is the year where all the games we usually lose turn into wins, a lot of young talent on this team. They are unburdened by the past failures.

So our recruiting has been good?

I thought the problem was that Dino couldn't recruit.

All of that is completely true.

On the other hand, the lost to Jacksonville State in the Doak earlier this year, with all of their athletes.

Just win, baby.

They lost to Jacksonville state (who got beat 31-0 by UAB), nuff said. Not a scary game.

Fsu is going to stack the box to negate our ground game. They've seen Shrader throw. They're going to be fine with letting him try to win it with his arm.
Fsu has a pretty good defense loaded with talent. Our o vs. their d is the matchup that doesn't favor us. Our front 6 on d have been great. But the secondary is vulnerable to the big play. We aren't a big play team with Shrader.
I forsee us struggling on the ground, and falling behind. With Shrader being a liability in the passing game, he gets pulled for Tommy, because we need to beat them through the air. Tommy gets it done, and then becomes everyone's favorite qb again.

I dont see Shrader giving the starter position up. If tommy comes in I expect sacks go through the roof. Shrader eludes sacks, tommy magnetizes them. Tommy is not going to win us games. This is his 5th year here and he has not done it. Shrader needs to get better at passing and I think he will.

I know Shrader is capable of having decent to good passing games. He proved it as a true freshman vs sec defenses. He had plenty of games, some against ranked sec teams with stats along the line of 15-20 for 200 plus yards and a td. Not great numbers, but impressive for a true freshman. All we need is a game manager, combined with our defense and ground game. Throw it 20 times a game, complete over 60%, and throw more TD's than picks. He's capable, but I don't think he'll be there by Saturday.

Sigh. Context matters.

Yes, those were technically SEC games.

However - the vast majority of his stats were accumulated in extended garbahge time (as Marv Albert called it), when his team was already getting blown out, and the reserves for the opponent were in.

His AVERAGE stats over 10 games were: 9 / 15, for < 120 yards, with a total of 8 TD's / 5 INT's.

He ran avg 11x / game for 5.2 ypc avg, with another 6 TD's rushing.
(I have no idea how many fumbles he lost, but his 'highlight tape' showed at least 3-4)

Here's his game log from 2019:

my gut feeling isn't great either, but I don't think they have played well enough to win games. They played horribly against Wake and Jacksonville State and they were getting smacked by both Notre Dame and Louisville before waking up. Basically they played one good quarter against ND and one good half against Louisville. Their pass defense is bad, their OL is bad. I think we can take advantage of the latter, but not sure if we can take advantage of the former, not until GS(hopefully) grows as a thrower

If it goes something like that? I would see it more like... Tommy comes in. Completes a glorious pass down the sideline. Called back for holding. On another critical completion to get us into field goal range? Ghost holding call, or non existent offensive PI. On some shorter routes? 2 drops. On a few more, the wr runs the wrong route. False start. False start. At this point, the only called play is a Bomb down the side line. Sack. Sack. Shrader comes in. Pick 6.

At this point, the entire board calls for Morgan. Lol.

I much prefer a 24 point victory, however we do it.

That's how I see it, too.

They are loaded with talent, but it isn't connecting on the field. We haven't fared well there on the road over the years, but this is a new year. And we have a QB who isn't going to be intimidated by playing those types of athletes, because he's already done so in the SEC.

My gut tells me we lose a close one, but would I be surprised if we somehow pull this out? Nope.

You know what Florida State has in the pants?

That can be kicked?

Grundle.

And I'm talking about like, really, really getting a solid front or snap kick all up in the grundle region.

I'm far more worried about this game than I was Liberty. Sure they lost to J-State but their other losses were all to P-5 teams (we have only played one P-5 team and we know how that turned out). You can toss in the fact that one of their losses was in OT to current #9 ND, our game is on the road, and we still have question marks on offense. Not saying we won't win but if we do I expect it to be very close. On paper this might be our least formidable opponent the rest of the way but I think that might be very deceiving.

Question. He started four games so those were not against the second team or blow outs. How did he do in those starts?

Found my answer on GS starts.
1. Kentucky - 305 total yards. 180 passing and 125 rushing. Accounted for all of st. 6 20 plus yard plays. 4 on passes.
2. LSU - 304 total yards. 238 yards passing and 66 rushing.
3. Tex A&M - 258 total yards. 194 passing and 64 rushing 3 passing TD
4. Ole miss - 108 pass and 19 rush. 2 TD

Auburn - came in end of 1st. Put together a 75 yard scoring drive. 298 total yards. 209 passing and 89 rushing.

was not a 300 yard a game passer but I would take those kind of stats as a starter in a min. Not sure he can do at su but I’m hoping.

The only game of those 4 that wasn’t a blowout L, was the 1 W vs Kentucky.

I’ll say it again -
Most of his stats in those 3 games were accrued after they were already decided.
And they were BIG L’s, where he didn’t do a whole lot during the portions where they were still somewhat competitive.

He had a late TD drive in each of them, for instance, which was clearly no longer against the 1’s on D.

We need to make sure FSU isn’t playing hangman on the sidelines again. Wasn’t it FSU that just flat out quit against BC one year? If we jump out early I can see them not giving it their all

that was us against BC in 2019... ;)

Reading these and other posts, both Tommy and Garrett have gained yards and produced scores that 'don't count' for one reason or another. So i guess we have have to find a way to also score enough points that do count to beat Florida State.
