Doom and Gloomers

• You singled out what TYPE OF POSTS. That's a set of generalizations right there. No one person is entirely one thing or another. Failure to discern nuance in an argument or discussions is a problem.
• In this post, you're confirming the second problem: that YOU have decided you are the arbiter of what is acceptable in terms of positivity or negativity. Face it — in an internet forum, neither is actually constructive. And, no, it's not a "fact" that you have decided there "was way too much negativity." That's, just, like your opinion, man.
• You have no idea what recruits were lost. For any given year. The factors that go into a kid's decision are rarely singular, and thinking you know which factors are most significant is ridiculous. Even if the kid TELLS you one thing, you can't count that as truth. My own parents still don't know what my actual criteriae were for choosing Syracuse, and i'm closer to them than any recruitnik is to any recruit. This also speaks to the future. Someone, somewhere has been put off by our issues. And, even Porter, who says he doesn't even know what we may have done has been affected negatively by them. Whether we overcome that or not is something to be seen, but it is already a factor.
• I guess you don't know what i mean by my comment on how we define "luck." You must be anti-semantic.
• I completely agree that i have biases. I recognize them. I acknowledge them. I embrace them. I haven't expressed any of them in this thread or in others regarding the sanctions. I've deliberately been off the forum for a good long time, because the discussion was so juvenile at times. So, even though i have biases, and still feel horribly about the loss of esteem in our national reputation, i avoided polluting the forum with those thoughts. But, if you ask me, what's worse than people expressing heartfelt feelings about a program that went through some difficult days? It's people starting sanctimonious 'told ya so' threads and telling other fans they aren't 'true fans' because they don't staple pom-poms to their palms.
Yeah, that is what i did. I said people weren't true fans that jumped ship. Yep, that's me. Good post. You nailed it.

There was a really bad vibe on the board. We were losing top recruits and jobs were on the line. The doom and gloom was real. Getting Battle is great, but it was a wonderful stroke of luck. Program saving commitment.

Let me say this...getting Battle was not luck. No way- no how.

It was luck that Michigan got his original verbal.

Out of everything he wrote that's the only thing you took out of it?

People here know what I am talking about. And so do you. We were in deep trouble. Hop was finished. G was leaving. The recruits would all want out of their commitment. Moyer would bail. And on and on. And none of it happened. Did the sanctions hurt us a bit. Yes. But they were never going to set us back the way some on this board said they would. And reminding people of it now has a purpose. There will be bad news again someday. And unless it is a lot worse than what we got this time, it will not destroy us. We had a thread about our new world of recruiting. Remember that 2-3? How we weren't elite anymore. Nonsense. A lot of people I wouldn't want to be in a foxhole with.

The thing is, I don't think many people said the recruits would all want out, it may have been passed around a couple of times by some goofballs but nobody in their right mind said that "at least that I haven't seen".

We honestly don't know how far they set us back, it's possible they already did when it came to the Bryant situation.

I personally always thought that the sanctions would be a hindrance but our staff did an unbelievable job and corrected the ship. They haven't been going after the projects like they used to, they're going after top tier talent which is what everybody said needed to happen for this situation not to have the effects like it could have.

Elite is another question, personally with who we "should" have on the roster in 16-17 I think we have the capabilities of fielding an elite team that should be our best since 2012 but that could be unfair expectations or it could come true, none of us know but it looks awesome on paper. At the end of the day we really don't know what's going to happen but you are right, it's not nearly as bad as some goofballs made it out to be.

dasher you are completely overreacting just like the doom and gloomers, only you're going the other way. We got the ~25th ranked recruit. Maybe he's a little better than that but come on. It's not like we got the next 1st pick in the NBA draft.

I don't read every post and don't spend a lot of time on the board during the summer but I must say I've never seen a post declaring that "this is the end of Syracuse basketball as we know it" or that "we should win the national championship every year". I don't think it's helpful to exaggerate an alternative point of view for the purpose of arguing with it.

I am not just talking about battle. I am talking about our entire recruiting class staying committed. I am talking about G coming back. I'm talking about the whole structure. Hopkins is the next coach. We are what we are. Not much has changed. That is the point. We weren't recruiting the first pick in the NBA draft before this.

The whole first visit and commitment to Michigan reminded me of my first wife. And then I came to my senses just like Battle did. It all worked out in the end!

Your first wife must have been absolutely stunning...because that campus certainly is. :)

She's owes money all over town, including to known porrrnagraphers. And that's cool. That's...that's cool.

Come on dasher, at one point we had McCullough declare for the draft (after tearing his acl and saying he was coming back), missed out on Bryant who we have recruited for years, and then battle committed to Michigan (very rarely do kids decomit in basketball, it's nothing like football recruiting where it is a forgone conclusion). I think there was absolutely reason to be a little concerned for the future.

This reminds me of something my grandmother used to say. She had a really high pitch voice like Edith Bunker. She would say, now read this with an Edith Bunker type voice, "If you don't have anything nice to say then shut your God damn mouth!"

I thought we were in trouble after battle picked UM. I'll own it.

I didn't think we were in trouble in the long term sense as much as I thought we might be in for a few down seasons. We still have a potential huge problem at center coming up this season. But 2016-17 is shaping up to look like a very special year.

Yeah let's see if we can consistently score 60 before we get our hopes back up

Me too.

Add me to the list as well. I'm usually a pretty optimistic poster/person in general, but a guy can only take so much.

After 25-0 it seemed to be a snow-ball of bad news:

- Ennis to the draft - somewhat unexpectedly.
- Grant to the draft - pretty unexpectedly.
- McCullough hurt after 10 or however many games for rest of season.
- Announcement of NCAA Tournament/Post-season ban.
- NCAA penalties.
- McCullough to the draft - very unexpectedly.
- Transfers of BJ & Ron.
- Bryant to Indiana - a kid from Rochester who staff had recruited for years! (Years!)

I mean, can you blame people for being pessimistic after all that?

And then, on top of all that, Battle announces for Michigan out of nowhere - another guy we were recruiting for years! (YEARS!)

I honestly gotta give the crowd here that managed to stay positive through all this a ton of credit. You were all much "better fans" than I, I guess. Cause not gonna lie...I def did let the pessimism seep in.

You pretty much took the words out of my mouth, I'm right there with you on everything you said.
