Duke and Tampering

I posted an article in the hoops daily articles the other day on Maliq and Duke. It was complimentary about Maliq, but also mentioned they do not expect he will start. What a shame.

Any idea if Maliq was pushed out (which sounds crazy)? Or, was he shopping his services?

Que the "yes" reply.

Last year seemed like chaos and while it didn't seem to bother him I can't imagine he wants to risk being around it. Or maybe he knew a team featured around JJ isn't a winner because I can't think of why he would leave to a bench. Unless he was told he would be on the bench here which if I were him I'd laugh in the staffs face and go to Duke just to keep laughing.

Not to beat a dead horse, but…he wasn’t starting over Lamp (nor did he want to play the 5), he wasn’t starting over Donnie at the 4, and he doesn’t have the offensive game to play the 3. So whatever his reasoning was, he’s gone, and he’s most likely not starting as a Dookie. He’ll have a better chance to play his senior year than he will next season, once Duke cleans house again next April. He’s going to be watching a lot of Flagg and playing some 5 to spell Maluach.

This was more $$ than anything. I think we all need to brace the reality that $$ talks first and everything else is an anomaly.

My guy I work with whose a former UVA g from the 80s has said the consensus is Scheyer is a great dude/recruiter but is pretty clueless on how to get everything to work the way K did and it’s becoming more and more evident. He has a ridiculous amount of resources to throw around yet he lacks the feel for what it takes to build a winner. This is his take not anything else but he saw Maliq as an easy buy. No more of the respect between programs or truly digging for the right fit just we see a guy we want to play with a bunch of freshmen and let’s toss $$$ at him because we are Duke.

I really don’t get this negativity around JJ. That’s all.

He would not have started here. Plane and simple. Lampkin is bigger, Donnie is a better 4, and he can’t shoot like Chris.

I find it very hard to believe that an All ACC defender wouldnt start over a freshman Donnie. Donnie is a better fit but Maliq is just so important.

Why is it a shame? Not start at Duke if Flagg plays the four (or start if he slides over).

Or not start at Syracuse because we spent all our money on a mediocre center and a frosh who isn’t nearly at the level of Flagg.

One of the major messages the new GM has spoken about is value for the amount spent. I wonder if that is in relation to the issues we encountered with Lampkin, and his price hike? More money there meant less to other positions?

Not as a 4 man. Also, Red is not going to sit his first AA recruit. Donnie is the better player. Maliq was a good defender, but that was inside against slower guys.
Donnie wasnt promised anything when he commited. How do you know Donnie is better when he hasnt played a game, Maliq will be one the best defenders in CBB as a 4 next year

Could have offered both Maliq and Donnie starting roles (for each half), I think it's more the NIL plus Justin Taylor's treatment.

I'm fine if they can find some undervalued guys moneyball style that can work here. Football was able to do it with dual threat QB's until the factories caught on.
