Duke Post Game

Good take by Axe.

The Autry pressers are unlistenable at this point.

He's trying to spin it positive but we're at the point of bold-faced lies sadly.

Axe diplomatically says that.
Autry’s repeating how college basketball is different from 10 years ago was a bad look given the setting. If he’s going to suggest that SU couldn’t compete then every fan who attended last night should get their money back.

Exactly, people think we just need talent. Watch their defense last night. They play a switching style defense they all move together, they all battle, they all give effort, they all help, and they all know where they are supposed to be. That is coaching. Getting the best talent money can buy and rolling the ball out gets you Indiana. Getting talent with coaching gets you Duke and most SEC teams. Getting you no talent and terrible coaching gets you Syracuse.

It's just more excuse making, IMO.

A decent head coach would coax exponentially more productivity out of our current personnel. A decent head coach would have us playing far more effective offense, and better defense. Period.

Whether or not that would be enough to overcome Duke -- a legitimate national championship contender -- is irrelevant. If Tony Bennet were coaching our team, we'd have 16 wins, and wouldn't be blown out every time we play a team with a pulse.

People can point to the talent all they want, and talent is certainly important, but it is merely the symptom of the problem -- not the ACTUAL problem.

you may not like results (i don't) but Red's pressers are 1000x than JB's last few years.
at least he stands up like a man and takes it. again you may not like the answers (i'm frankly a little tired of "the we talked about this and that " ) but he doesn't snippily cut off questions , belittle the press or try to pretend he's the only dude in the room with the answers .

The talent thing is an annual cycle on this site. During the season people say, duhhh, talent is the problem. Then the offseason comes, we add some players, and those people say seeeee nowwwww we have talent. Then the season goes sideways and those folks say, duhhhh, talent is the problem.

i can't tell if this isn't an exact repost from 7 years ago. cuz the conclusion reads the same.

I said this was the worst roster of my lifetime in the offseason and people came at me hard. It should not be a surprise we suck.
I thought this was the best roster we have had going into the season since 2018-2019 on paper which was a season I thought we underperformed. Yeah that wasn’t really that much of an underperformance in hindsight though. A notable red flag though in the offseason was not playing D1 exhibitions. We’re either incompetent or not trying to be competitive.

We don’t have a player that would have been in the top 6 in the rotation in 2021, top 5 in 20/22, and top 3 in 23. The talent level isn’t even close to JB’s worst years.

That’s a totally opposite take from Kiyan’s high school coach. At one point he was sixth man. He had nothing but great th8ngs to say about father and son.
Hope you're right. This is a bigger stage where Melo was king. Hopefully, the same attitude/behavior will follow Kiyan to SU.

I think if I was the coach and a player said he no longer wanted to be part of our program, I wouldn’t give him the same opportunities as the players on the roster. I’d stop letting him use the Melo Center too. These kids can’t have it both ways. Go shoot hoops in Archbold Gym.

I agree, especially when going to a conference opponent.

In the kids defense it’s not like we have an offense…. Or a defensive philosophy to take with him. Lol

I was all for Red getting at least 3 years, but I really don't see an improvement in year 3. He was dealt a bad hand inheriting a broken program that dropped in prestige due to Boeheim holding on way too long, not going out recruiting the last several years of his tenure, and not moving away from the zone defense which a lot of top recruits did not want to play.

In the case of Duke and North Carolina, the former players now coaches, inherited strong programs that didn't need to be rebuilt. Only a veteran coach who is highly respected could have turned our program around quickly.

I'm worried that Melo will have too much control and say, and we might be forced to play Kiyan ahead of certain guys even if he doesn't deserve it. We should learn something about the downside of nepotism from the extra years that Boeheim stayed on to coach his son, and let's not even mention the embarrassment of LeBron getting his way with his not ready for "day time" or the "night shift" son.
Funny... "a lot of top recruits did not want to play" the 2-3 zone. Why would we let the recruits dictate our strategy? I'd rather we were a NCAA tournament bubble team playing the 2-3 zone than a team that is on the bubble of the ACC tournament playing M2M. I get that JB dropped the ball at the end to keep us out of the top 25... and that the NIL changes the landscape... but why change what worked?

Yeah, comments like that are giving off Dino vibes. I interpret that as we cant compete in this new environment. How is that going to help to get fans to show up to games and donate?

FWIW, I'm personally surprised we are as bad as we are. I thought we'd be at least competitive with better teams and easily beat bad teams. Similar to last year.

I knew the defense would be worse and said as much.
I had no faith in Carlos as said as much.

I was wrong on Bell, although ultimately not shocked, but had no clue he would be as bad as he's been offensively.

I feel like some of the folks here flip flop their takes so much they don't remember what they believe...or they just refuse to say their were wrong. I'm not sure. It's very First Take like.

Anybody see Brents Recap? its pretty spot on.

Scheyer says Red is great coach, Brent says how? Nobody can explain how?

Its standard coach speak, Rick Barnes said the same thing.

Duke Recap

Dabo used to say the same thing about Dino.

Sure its a Fraternity

They attend offseason meetings and events together, might play in a golf tournament and become friends outside of the season.

I think Bell desperately misses Gerry. He worked on Bell's shot a lot last year.

And coaches like a coach that they can consistently beat.

What's the point of our centers setting screens? Both guys did it repeatedly against Duke. It's like it's just a formality. They come up, set a half a$$ screen, and then peel away without it doing a damn thing. Meanwhile, it's just taking time off the clock before someone (usually JJ) goes iso.
