Duke Postgame Thread

Regarding the Clemson game, it got a lot closer at the end because Collins was bad. If Collins played QB from the start we would have lost that game by a lot as well. Momentum is a thing and Duke was able to take it and never give it back. A QB that can move the ball, wind the defense, and score makes a difference. Today is a close game that we likely win if we have PB Angeli.

Good QB play has kept us in games for quite a while now. (Since McCord) Defense has been terrible even before Fran, under Dino and it hasn't improved much. I think that's the most surprising thing coach Fran being a defensive guy.

I definitely agree with the part about the Clemson game, Rickie looked poor in that game to me as well. This game, I think would’ve been A Lot closer had Angeli been healthy, but idk if we win

Doesn’t have to fire him, just bring in a “co DC” to “help out”.

I’m more concerned if Fran thinks it’s all just talent and not schemes. That could be his rationale and undoing.
And we just lost Coyle to UCLA

  • The program seems to do this regardless of the circumstances. Gain some momentum and then throw it all away. Crowd was a sellout, I wasn’t there, but seemed everyone was excited then boom.

  • Collins is going to be the topic of conversation. Keep in mind, that is a really really bad Duke defense (in general I do think Duke is decent, on offense very quick with a stud qb) but on defense they are not good. He did not look good at all, unfortunately, a massive step down and he needs a short leash going forward. You can’t just throw the season away if his play continues. He was staring down everybody.

  • Our run game is way over stated. I’d like to run it more but way too many times runs get stuffed. It isn’t the magic answer running the ball more.

  • Game might be different without the obvious targeting penalty not called. Nor was it a fumble, mind boggling. But also it’s different without the absolute air mail interception (which we saw against Colgate as well).

  • Erob was exposed. The book is obvious, get your skilled players out in space and Cuse will miss tackles.

  • Young team was bound to have a stinker…

  • One thing losing, but Duke shouldn’t blow anyone out.

  • defensive line is terrible. No push at all, idk what more can you say other than this needs a massive upgrade.

  • Ross looked good.

  • Clemson isn’t good. They were not good before playing us, that win got a bit too much to the season projections.

If we are going to limit the passing game to give Collins more easy throws, then we should go to more 2 back sets. Gives you the ability to run counters better, have a blocker lead into the hole, introduces some uncertainty, and both of them can catch passes out of the backfield. I could totally see a play where Nixon runs a wheel route to one side, Willis stays back, looking like a blocker, and then giving him a delayed handoff.

A HC learning on the job at the D1 level was not going to be a linear thing. His brief half time interview saying he was being 'out coached' was on full display ALL afternoon.
You could get blown out by Pitt last year and say it was a bad day because McCord had proven he could play.
You can't get blown out at home with a full house , and expect Rickie will turn it around.
He was bad against Colgate, and bad against Clemson.
He may be a great kid but he isn't a power 4 QB , so it's time to let Carney take his lumps, and maybe win a few games .

I’m relatively convinced Collins isn’t the quality to be a D1 starting QB, let alone P4. I hope he turns it around and I’m wrong, but I think he’s looked bad every time he’s played

Collins is terrible. The defense is worse.

If Collins is what we have, you have to figure out ways to make him successful.
He did wind up with 24 completions and over 200 yards. He just made several bad decisions, and nervous sweaty hands plays. Start with avoiding turnovers and having him throw slants, crossing patterns and to backs out of the backfield. Don't go downfield, except off play action.

In addition to having a backup QB start, think having a younger team that feeling high after last week's game played a role here.

Also was disappointed with the defensive gameplan, Duke has a nice offense but felt like they were always a step ahead.
I was told than Fran would not let that happen. There would be no letdown!
