Duke Postgame Thread

In addition to having a backup QB start, think having a younger team that feeling high after last week's game played a role here.

Also was disappointed with the defensive gameplan, Duke has a nice offense but felt like they were always a step ahead.
It’s the role of the coaches to make sure that doesn’t happen

I’m relatively convinced Collins isn’t the quality to be a D1 starting QB, let alone P4. I hope he turns it around and I’m wrong, but I think he’s looked bad every time he’s played

He made a handful of 10-20 yard completions on slants and over the middle. He throws a nice wheel route. He can hit guys from time to time. But when it comes to hitting targets, he's like a pitcher with poor control. He can get the ball in a catchable range, but it's often on the wrong shoulder, or half a step behind. Part of that is timing and getting used to game speed. I think he can be reasonably good. Just don't ask him to be a downfield passer. He's not good enough at that and will make too many mistakes.

bottom line -- Duke is a better team than we are

Our defense was trash, and they have been bad most of the year. They made plays against Clemson and managed a lead. But even then, they gave up a ton of yards late.

To me it seems he’ll throw about 3-4 ok-good passes, then throw a horrendous pass… Also he has a receiver picked before the snap and will only throw to him

The first INT killed us, and it wasn’t totally on Collins. That ball was tipped from behind at the last second by the DE who got through the back side. That’s why the throwing motion and the duck in the air didn’t jive. We should have scored on that drive and been up 7-0. It was downhill from there.

I’m absolutely disgusted with the refs and the interpretation of targeting in our last two games. Angeli took two friggin hits to the head area, and Cook got rung today. There should have been an ejection in each game. The called fumble on Cooks’ play made the no-call on targeting that much more frustrating.

Our best guys are young. Samuel showed his youth today.

This may seem like a stretch, but I coached travel softball for 5 years. We always had our girls play up an age group. When they were 12 we played 14U. When they were 14 we played 16U, etc. That first year in every bracket was tough. The head coach kept lamenting how bad we were and I kept telling hiim, wait until next year; we're going to be really good. They had to play through the lumps to get better. Each next year we were winning tournaments. I see this the same way. This season will have glimpses of what they can do, and also days like today where they get whipped like kids.

I agree that the defense needs new leadership and a different identity, but this team will be tough next year. Maybe you do need to put Carney in there to play through his youth as well.

He was throwing better later in the game. His 4th down pass to the 1 that was called OOB is one that Angeli would have placed high and about 3 yards inside the sideline. Probably would have been a TD.

Oh well

Yes he has to move his head around. That one pick was totally the safety reading his eyes. Even if you know you are going to your first read, at least look away first, even if it's fake. Just for a moment, to make them twitch and react in the secondary. Gives your guy an extra step, and an extra moment for you to make the throw.

No sugarcoating this game. It was a beat down against an average Duke team. The goal now is to develop a backup QB and shoring up the defense. We need pass rushers and breakaway backs. We’re a long way from being a serious ACC challenger. Brown isn’t going anywhere. It’s all about next year.

We did get about 4 sweet calls early, though. We just couldn't cash in on them.

Unless Angeli transfers(I don’t think he will) he is our starter next year. So, what’s the point in keeping Rickie as the starter this year if he sucks next week too? I know Carney is a true freshman but can he look worse? The D just blows, I don’t know how we find 3 more wins without great QB play.

Because players get better, and players get hurt. How long have you been a fan? A pretty long time, right? We've had like 3 seasons in the last 20 years where we didn't lose at least 1 QB.

The defense is awful tackling in the open field. It's unbelievable how bad they are.

The real problem with playing Collins after today is if you go on the road against SMU, and Collins doesn't do well you can lose the entire team.
In the 3 games he has played he hasn't shown the team he is capable of being a leader.
