The real problem with playing Collins after today is if you go on the road against SMU, and Collins doesn't do well you can lose the entire team.
In the 3 games he has played he hasn't shown the team he is capable of being a leader.

I'm kind of leaning your way, but he has made some decent plays, like that TD throw against Clemson, and a few nice throws in this game. It's about limiting mistakes, and keeping your head back there. If he's awful next week, then yeah, we could lose the team and crash and burn. But I don't think these coaches would tolerate kids just quitting on the season.

If Collins is what we have, you have to figure out ways to make him successful.
He did wind up with 24 completions and over 200 yards. He just made several bad decisions, and nervous sweaty hands plays. Start with avoiding turnovers and having him throw slants, crossing patterns and to backs out of the backfield. Don't go downfield, except off play action.
I find that QB counting stats have become nearly useless to determine how a guy actually played. The way offenses work these days, QBs always end up with a decent completion rate and a good amount of yards. But he was objectively terrible.

If Nixon can make him successful then he’s more than ready to take on an NFL job.

You give Rickie next week before you even think of any radical change to the system or QB.

Nixon showed courage and belief in Rickie by running the same kind of plays he has run for the entire time he has been here at the beginning of the game. And there were flashes, a handful of plays where it worked. We have good wide receivers, a good TE, good running backs. We do have playmakers out there. We will be able to score. I believe that.

We need to be more aggressive on defense. We went after Clemson. Now, you can say that if you blitz, you leave your DBs vulnerable, but you don't HAVE to play man defense if you blitz. You can still do zone coverage back there, but we give cushions that are too big. If we don't tackle well in the open field, you can't allow these other teams to have room to catch the ball so they can run after the catch.

Tommy could make good throws but it was running an effective offense that hampered him. Rickie looks to be the same , and it would be better to try the Freshman Carney, then letting Rickie out there again.

The first INT killed us, and it wasn’t totally on Collins. That ball was tipped from behind at the last second by the DE who got through the back side. That’s why the throwing motion and the duck in the air didn’t jive. We should have scored on that drive and been up 7-0. It was downhill from there.

I’m absolutely disgusted with the refs and the interpretation of targeting in our last two games. Angeli took two friggin hits to the head area, and Cook got rung today. There should have been an ejection in each game. The called fumble on Cooks’ play made the no-call on targeting that much more frustrating.
I'm pretty sure the Clemson defensive end did get tossed last week.

Unless Angeli transfers(I don’t think he will) he is our starter next year. So, what’s the point in keeping Rickie as the starter this year if he sucks next week too? I know Carney is a true freshman but can he look worse? The D just blows, I don’t know how we find 3 more wins without great QB play.

Who gives you the best chance of a bowl game?

Because players get better, and players get hurt. How long have you been a fan? A pretty long time, right? We've had like 3 seasons in the last 20 years where we didn't lose at least 1 QB.

The defense is awful tackling in the open field. It's unbelievable how bad they are.
No way Collins is the backup next year. He is so bad. They will have to try and develop carney or grab someone from the portal. Collins doesn’t have it.

Real question:
How long does Fran give ERob?
It has got to be tough when they go that far back but at some point he ha got to make a change.
This is not a good defense. We have been in the bottom quarter of FBS schools in team defense.
He has shown some flashes but overall not so good.

Forever. Fran’s never going to be convinced that his guy isn’t a good DC.

I get what you're saying - even Greg Paulus completed 2/3 of his passes and we stunk.
But this kid was rattled, had a handful of truly awful plays. And still wound up with 24 completions for about 8 yards per catch. Not terrible; that's workable.

He threw for about 150 yards in the 2nd half. He had several nice passes to Ross, and 2 or 3 good ones to JRS. He hit the TEs for a couple nice pickups. He wasn't as awful as 5 interceptions. Bad game, but he did make plays.

Fran had the playbook last week in his hands while we were on d. I almost wonder if he was either calling plays or helping to last week.

I’m gonna guess that Duke’s defensive approach in the second half was simply to make SU work and not give up any quick scores. And we didn’t even score at all. To me that yardage is utterly meaningless.

Collins seems like a nice guy, but he’s a terrible QB. Over a year at SU, plus a year at LSU, and he looked flat out unprepared and inaccurate.

That was only his first start, so I think you have to give him another game, Bob. It's not like they can go sign a free agent, or claim someone off the waiver wire.
I wouldn't be shocked if he makes a lot of improvements in his second real game.

It's why EPA and success rate are key metrics now when analyzing performance now

Last week open field tackling was outstanding. The difference today was mind boggling

That was the first time he ever started in his college career.
Even Troy Nunes led us to 3 winning seasons out of four.
I believe that Collins is more talented than Nunes, and about 10 other QBs who have played for us this century.

He won't fire him, but he could definitely bring in a co-coordinator.

So that’s 1 post about how Rickie got “better” even though it was against the second string defense. I had my bet at 15 posts so that’s a good sign

Our defensive talent is subpar. It’s obvious
It’s year 2. If the talent is subpar then it should be better. I don’t think it’s all talent though. I think ERob just isn’t very good at running a defense.
