Duke Postgame Thread

What??? Only one pass thrown into the line!!!!

It was a planned play, a TE screen in the middle. But the 2 linemen couldn't move their guys far enough off the line, and the DT jumped into the open lane for the pass to Villardi. Overall, I liked the call, but the OL were not in the right positions for it to work.

This game, felt like what it must feel like to be a Jets fan... except the Jets have talent on Defense...

he was like the rabbit on the rail being chased by dogs at the track . except the rail was crazy crooked and ran backwards away from the finish line.

His play in the 1st half of that Georgia Tech Kick Off Classic that year at Giants Stadium had me red faced with anger at halftime. And I was with my 12 or 13 year old nephew. Not a good look. LOL.

I saw CTO at halftime, and she was wondering what the hell was wrong with me, LOL. Yes, I used to be that guy. I am way more philosophical about watching sports now. It's entertainment, not religion, or "who I am".

I get it. This game was brutal. The defense has been “meh” at best, and that’s frustrating to watch.

But we’re still only in the first half of year two of a major rebuild under Fran Brown. This kind of turbulence was always going to happen. We were extremely lucky last season, the portal worked in our favor, and a lot of those 50/50 games broke our way.

This year’s schedule is no joke either. It’s legitimately a top-10 toughest slate in all of college football. Meanwhile, Duke and Diaz opened the checkbook for their QB and portal additions, and it’s paying off for them. That’s the reality of the current college football landscape.

That said, I do think Fran needs to have some real conversations with his defensive staff. We’ve got some legit talent on that side of the ball, enough that it shouldn’t look this rough. Whether it’s scheme, communication, or teaching, something’s off and it needs to be addressed.

Bottom line: patience. Culture change doesn’t happen overnight, and a true rebuild is rarely linear. If we stay the course, build depth, keep winning in the portal, and clean up the defensive approach, this program can absolutely be where we all want it to be.

I was at the game.
Atmosphere was electric.
Then the interception and then at least 6 awful throws that Rickie made in the first 3 quarters.
I mean he really should have had about 5 interceptions
All the energy and joy just left the building, fans were mystified initially at how bad Collins was. Then it turned to despair and a lot of frustration and anger.
You should have seen the arguing while waiting in line for the buses, he jumped the line!, no you did!
It was probably one of the worst qb performances I have ever seen in the dome, and I have been a season ticket holder for 30 years.
Sigh, either Fran lied to us about the qb battle being close, or Collins had a giant case of stage fright.
Bad throws, bad runs and horrendous decision making. So so bad in all aspects!
We went from being on Mount Everest last week to falling to the deepest depths of the ocean.
Kind of feel really heartbroken 💔

It’s year 2. If the talent is subpar then it should be better. I don’t think it’s all talent though. I think ERob just isn’t very good at running a defense.

I don't think our talent on defense is terrible, but we lost a couple important guys to the portal. We have some big, fast guys, but many are young. Our roster has always been setting up for Year Three.

I get what you're saying - even Greg Paulus completed 2/3 of his passes and we stunk.
But this kid was rattled, had a handful of truly awful plays. And still wound up with 24 completions for about 8 yards per catch. Not terrible; that's workable.

He threw for about 150 yards in the 2nd half. He had several nice passes to Ross, and 2 or 3 good ones to JRS. He hit the TEs for a couple nice pickups. He wasn't as awful as 5 interceptions. Bad game, but he did make plays.
He should have had 5 interceptions if the Duke DB’s could catch. It could have been much much worse. Paulus was a way better player than this. I understand the grumbling about the defense, but I’m throwing out the entire season for the rest of the team if this is the QB play we are going to get.

That game was terrible to watch horrible in every aspect. The only good thing is if this is the team we have it will be a lot easier to get food and drinks the next game because there will only be half as many people there.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I remained pretty hopeful until "The Call". That totally should have gone the other way, and then the game is 17-10 in a couple plays. They scored on the very next play, I believe. That was it. Game over.

I don’t want to pile on Rickie, he had a bad enough day as it was, but in the postgame press conference did he reference missed tackles as one thing we have to improve? I wasn’t watching when that was said but I thought that was part of one of his answers. I hope not, I wanted to hear him apologize for a poor performance - that’s the accountability part of things - and didn’t hear that. I’m happy to be wrong

Haven't seen this mentioned so I'll throw it in here - Duke had a 4th and 3 around midfield, if that in the 2nd. We were a mess on defense. Calling a TO might have forced Duke to punt, instead of the extremely easy 1st down and eventual score.

Rickie is getting killed here, and he clearly didn't play well, but he was let down all over the field today and then became really one dimensional.

He did very well in HS in Texas. That's like semi-pro football.
and Rickie was like the #4 pocket passer in his class...means nothing

I hope Carney is the real deal but to say we know he can play is absurd. He may be a deer in the headlights even worse than Rickie.

Our defense was horrendous. Players running around, unsure of who they were guarding. LBs trying to guard Slot Wrs and getting dusted. Safeties taking horrible tackling angles and then missing tackles... Our DBs have the hips of 60yr old grandma... like extremely stiff...
Offense wasn't bad but Ricky was awful, he was constantly throwing off his back leg, and threw some just eyes closed ass throws.

We just weren't there today.

Young team, high from last week's wins, QB injury/new QB, scrappy team coming in.

Whole Hearty Recipe for a loss.

I will say I feel good after listening to the post-game presses with Fran and the players. They know they laid a massive egg here.

I'm gonna give Rickie another shot here. WRs did him no favors. Nixon and play calling group need to establish a run game ffs. Use Rickie on some draws, keep those LBs honest.

I missed it and went fishing instead. I’m positive that was the right decision.
My post game therapy was trimming the palms & seed stems from this 40' palm. As brutal as our pass blocking.
