Earlier in the season, I had seen them play other teams and start out with their 3 guard lineup, and then get killed inside on defense.
Against Pitt, the first thing I noticed is that Coach K started 3 forwards instead of 3 guards, and I think the impact was significant. They are much less reliant on the jump shot with that lineup, and they defended the interior better than I have seen them do this year.
Now with them on a 5 game winning streak, and with Jabari Parker playing more inside and not relying quite so much on his jump shot, they look like a much improved team over earlier in the year.
And then, once they got the lead on Pitt in the middle of the 2nd half, they went back to the 3 guard lineup, and suddenly had space all over the floor for their shooters, plus they had the ball handling to put Pitt away. Very impressive win for Duke.
They have turned Saturday's game into a must-win for us, if we are going to retain the #1 seed in the East for the NCAA tourney. So long as we get past them on Saturday, I think we can survive splits with Duke and Pitt and still come in at the top of the ACC and get that #1 seed.
