Durell Eskridge Makes Orange Nation Proud While Ending His Career

I've watched enough TV and listened to enough music to know that 'beating 2 bodies' is going to court and not being convicted of that murder charge.

He is currently employed with the Arizona Cardinals - if they do not have any issue with that tweet then neither do i. I know that twitter is a bigger deal than it ever used to be but he has less than 1,000 followers. It got 1 retweet. Calling attention to it like this just makes it a bigger deal when in reality it's nothing.

You are probably right. I didnt call attention to it though - I just responded to reading it. Its an offensive statement IMO.

I'm certainly not going to reply to him or call the Cardinals to bash him. I'll call it offensive, I'll move on and I'll root for him to make the team.

Hernandez did this as a calculated move. He got off the double murder charges, and was appealing Odin Lloyd's murder. By killing himself, he was technically considered by the courts to be not guilty, which allows his family to inherit his estate. He also was able to see his family one last time the other day during the trial.

With that knowledge, it's definitely less fishy.

Hernandez's agent said the same thing as Eskridge. Why aren't people upset at him?

Yep, his guilty verdict will be vacated. This was a calculated financial move by him, and with more information being released with the bible verses quoted, etc, all fits together.

I'm sorry, but what the hell does that mean? Does that mean if we didn't grow up in a car and the backstreets we can't have an opinion on either the situation or the comments?

It means exactly what the hell it means. Who are any of you to condemn someone because of their opinion? Then you have posters implying he didn't take advantage of his education because of what he thought on the matter. The same ones who'll curse a player in one minute then praise him in the next. Making Orange Nation proud? What kind of title is that? He didn't play for any of you. He played for his teammates and coaches. This sense of ownership some fans have over programs and players is weird.

Jewel and Jim Carey grew up living in cars ... They turned out alright

Isn't America great!? I can condemn anyone I want without having to worry about my "privilege". If you and others don't like it, that's your problem, not mine.

I'm pretty sure he played for Syracuse University.

Lol slept in his car... a guy with an AK47 unloaded "over 100 rounds" onto a crowd of people. He watched two friends die in front of him. He comes from a very difficult, violent background. 4 years in Syracuse wasn't going to change his vernacular. Again. This is not a story

I see nothing wrong with that

Prisons have a funny way of hiding things

Things happen that look one way but are blurry in reality

I'm not going to pretend to know what happened besides his ultimate death, just saying, things happen.

My father worked in Auburn for 32 years and I have many friends working Auburn and Cayuga. Prisons are a dirty place and things often times are metted out a little bit different than expected.

The coroner just announced that it was a suicide.

Do you think he/she is in on it as well?

Wait wait. I've read and listened to DEs interviews before. He's a well spoken guy and certainly intelligent enough to describe Hernandez as fortunate because he was found "not guilty" rather than the way he did.

Also he got waived by cards.

Ah i didn't know he got waived. That's unfortunate. Interviews are not twitter. I really don't see what the big deal is. Look at his timeline and you see how he speaks in his own right on twitter isn't how he interviews. And that's okay. If you guys don't like it, don't read it lol

By committing suicide he gets his appeals dismissed and will be found not guilty of all his charges. He will now be able to collect his bonus of 15 million the patriots owe him that was taken away by breaking his contract by being a convicted felon. His family also gets to collect his NFL pension and his family has begun preparing to sue the NFL for cte and the dept of corrections for his death. His family will make a fortune. This will also make it much harder to sue his estate for the deaths in civil court. He wrote 2 letters one to his family and one to his fiancé saying good bye. While he did escape his being found guilty in this past case he was not having his first conviction overturned and he knew it. They had every move he made on film even in his own house. He did this for his daughter. As for Durrells comments I'd say anyone apply for any job now a days should keep controversial comments to themselves. Even if one potential employer in a land of only a few potential employers doesn't like what you said you have hurt yourself. Aside from that if you don't care how it makes you look say what you want.

I grew up in the backwoods of New York without heat, unless we chopped wood, in a friggin trailer. But, hey, I apparently have "privilege." This privilege thing pisses me off to no end.

(OT alert) I'm pretty interested in this... Do you not believe privilege exists?

He'll be able to bequeath his estate to his wife/daughter, but his bonus isn't happening.

"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

Everyone could stand to read that.

But it is insulting when someone says or suggests that a kid who had a rough upbringing should be handled with kid gloves, treated with a different set of rules, because of that. Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations.

And it's asinine that anyone would, in the same breath, defend Eskridge's opinion while impugning texascpa for expressing his. Are some opinions more valuable than others? Of course. But I disagree wholeheartedly with this glorification of ignorance, the suggestion that some "privileged" party has less right to opine -- and that his statement has less merit -- because of that relative privilege.

We will see when the families lawyers get a hold of it.

You read a lot into my question, friend. I'm honestly interested why the idea of privilege pisses texascpa off.

My initial comment in this thread was not about privilege. My initial comment wasn't about handling Eskridge with kid gloves or about giving him a pass. Since he's not here to explain his comments, we're left at trying to guess a bit at his intent. I simply pointed to the idea that a black kid who grows up around violence probably sees the criminal justice system through a different set of eyes than a white kid from semi-suburban NY (me). It's acknowledging the possible differences and not judging his comments through my experiences, fully. If he were here, we could talk about those differences and find a common ground somewhere. Since he's not - we can disagree with his take while acknowledging there might be different world-views involved.

It's extremely rare these cases get overturned, especially when there has already been a settlement.

Agree with that. I'm just chiming in on the broader concept rather than your question - I treated it as a jumping-off point.

I can only speak for myself, but I have two concerns about citing "privilege." First, the term is often weaponized; it's used to chill speech. Second, this usage of "privilege" necessarily makes a distinction between the substance of an idea and the identity of the person expressing it. Even if we try not to take that as extraordinarily insulting, it's still problematic in the epistemological sense. Whether an idea has merit shouldn't depend on the ethnic, gender, or socioeconomic status of the messenger.

So, while I wish we were all much more empathetic in our treatment of one another, I think the use "privilege" is counterproductive at best.

Oh I agree I just am always disgusted by lawyers finding a Bs way of making people pay. It will be well your game made him get cte and he didn't know what he was signing. So we want all his money or something like that

Also heard the lawyer say they were looking at the NCAA to have a lawsuit for the cte this morning... not bad for a client who hasn't even been diagnosed with cte yet

In terms of advantage, sure. But so what? Life isn't fair. Some are prettier than others, some stronger, some smarter and some born into a more favorable environment. As Ottomets stated above, the argument of "privilege" is to quiet those that don't agree. That's exactly what that poster I responded to did. That's what pisses me off.

Fair enough. (I re-wrote my question a few different ways to make sure I wasn't coming across as accusatory. I'm honestly interested in the topic, but def didn't want to offend you or piss your off further lol)

I'll let that poster handle the intent of what they meant.

I'd say that the other side of citing "privilege" is that sometimes it forces those with more advantages look at themselves and ask hard, but helpful questions. I spent time in Guatemala and wondered about my moral obligation for having so much as an American citizen, while they had so much less ($2 a month for a family of 7). There are no easy answers, but I do think there is value in asking the question from time to time.
