Because he was in The Blind Side:

Honestly, if we make him hire a really good OC, he could be pretty decent. That was his downfall at 'Ole Miss.I like experience and recruiting prowess of ole Ed, his name seems to be mentioned every time the Cuse position becomes available
"<REDACTED> THAT MOTHER<REDACTED>."
"Coach, I’m …" were the only words I managed. Orgeron walked down a hallway and through a staff-only entrance to the football offices.
Freeze made one last attempt. Orgeron swung and faced me.
"<REDACTED>! WE ARE NOT GONNA LET THIS PROGRAM BE SABOTAGED!"
Years later, an Orgeron colleague from their University of Miami days told me that he once had to pick up "Bebe" (Orgeron's nickname) from police custody after a night out. He said he was told by law enforcement officials seasoned in evaluating violence that Orgeron's bar fight opponent looked dead.
"The cops thought Bebe had killed the other guy. That was Bebe. He was wild."
and Bud didn't ruin the article, interesting.
Holy cow, that was a Bud article? I didn't even notice, I read it all the way through.and Bud didn't ruin the article, interesting.
Lies!!!Holy cow, that was a Bud article? I didn't even notice, I read it all the way through.
Because Orgeron knows how to coach/recruit and something that Shafer got low grades for. Orgeron needed and never had a good OC at Ole Miss and that was his downfall. If we wanted to hire a defensive head coach with a losing head coaching record then why would we have fired Shafer in the first place.

Orgeron needed and never had a good OC at Ole Miss and that was his only downfall.
Couldn't you say the same thing about Shafer?
I think there were more issues with Shafer at SU than Orgeron at Ole Miss. Shafer lost the fans and really made some knucklehead calls/moves which made it hard to watch the Cuse anymore. I wish Shafer could stay as DC but I know that would never happen.Couldn't you say the same thing about Shafer?
We could certainly do worse, for sure. And as much as I like him on the recruiting trail, I would still prefer an offensive coach at this point. Give me Frost or Lincoln Riley or maybe Mike Sanford at this point, with Orgeron as a fallback. One thing Bebe has is a large network of possible assistants. He wanted to hire Lane Kiffen as OC at Ole Miss so at least he wanted to play a wide open modern offense.
While I prefer an offensive HC we could do an awful lot worse than Coach O.
In many ways he is a safer choice than a coordinator with no HC experience.
