Elijah Hughes

Was in a bar tonight in Charlottesville and saw a recent former ECU player. He had an ECU shirt on and was tall. After I asked him if/when he played at ECU; I then asked about Hughes. He said really good things and that we’ll be happy. They were teammates briefly. Talked about scoring and shooting ability. Really nice dude.

With all of the debate when Hughes joined the program it will be very interesting to see how he does. I took a lot of flack for being less than enthused when we landed him. I'll be the first to eat crow if he is as good as many are portraying him. I'm still skeptical, but we'll be a MUCH better team if he's a major player this season. AND... that's what we all want... a team that contends for an elite 8 or better. It should be very attainable with every starter returning from a team that made the sweet sixteen last year, that has also added a viable bench. LGO!

I think he can be a nice player for us, but don't know where the "superstar" type player talk is coming from. Would love that, of course -- but I don't think that is realistic at this stage.

Yeah the superstar talk would be the homers and orange-goggled rubes I’d assume. To me he did look a little thick/heavy in that one dunking clip on Twitter or wherever back during the season. The ECU teammate dude at the bar in CVille fwiw said he is more of a scorer/shooter than an athlete high-riser type because I did ask about explosiveness and such.

Yeah, that "orange goggled rube" was JB. GMac has also talked up Hughes. There are a couple of other well connected insiders here, probably also rubes, who have heard similar things about what Hughes has been doing in practice since last fall.

I agree that JB is prone to hyperbole, so who knows. Despite what the "dude" told you, there are more than a few who think that Hughes is the real deal.

Fair enough. I never saw this “superstar” quote. I just think it is a bit strange and overzealous, regardless. Real deal I’m expecting but “superstar” is a totally different animal, IMO.

I will admit to wearing orange goggles, as do many on this board, but I don't think that necessarily qualifies us as rubes

the first time the word superstar was used was in docs post yesterday asking where talk of superstar was coming from. that's why you didn't see it.

"Rube" has zero street cred unless its used by Charles Dickens

Not trying to be antagonistic SoBe, but the only reference to "superstar" stuff I've seen was in your post above (the only one to catch my eye anyway; maybe there were others).

JB: “He’s as talented an offensive player as we’ve had in a long time,” Boeheim said Monday on the College Hoops Today Podcast in reference to Hughes, a 6-6 wing who averaged 7.8 points two years ago at East Carolina. “We’re going to be a significantly better offensive team next season.”

Ha. Rube literally means country-bumpkin. Maybe not you but I’d wager there are a few here. Anthony Bourdain used it beautifully once in Kitchen Confidential. “In nicer kitchens it is commonplace for chefs to set aside their worst cuts of beef for the rubes who order their steaks well done.”

Lots of crow to all who threw eggs , the push back and negative bs when he started practicing with us 14 months ago was absurd, he’s up there talent wise on our team with incredible pure physical and athletic gifts , hand eye coordination is unreal,
in particular, all the whining about his ability to shoot seems pretty asinine now. We had a good one!

However this should not start debates on who is better than who, too early and wait for guys to play their spots

I never commented in the original thread. Good call FWIW. Hughes is so smooth. We should just call him Butter.

I admit I was a little leery and am ready to eat crow. However I wasn't even close to as outspoken/repetitive as another poster - well former poster. His account is disabled or was disabled for him.
