Elijah Moore Entering the Transfer Portal

Moore seems like the 2024/25 version of Jalen Carey...one excellent game followed by rapidly diminishing scoring and even worse defense ending in transferring out. I suspect Moore will be OK somewhere else but never be a "star" and will end up moving around a couple more times.
I remember that game - I believe it was at Madison Square Garden but I don’t recall the opponent. I thought we had the next big SU superstar.

I believe it was against UCONN.

My reason for wanting to keep JJ and Moore with all their flaws, is I am not confident that we can get better 2 guards from the portal, as the top shooting guards in the portal will have better options than SU. Look at the players we attracted from the portal this past season, and who was available that we had no shot at getting. For some reason a lot of folks on this board act like we are in yesteryear when we were a great program that attracted talent.

The best case scenario for next season’s guard positions should have been to keep JJ and Moore with Kiyan, Womack and Fennell coming in. Knowing what you have helps to identify players that can balance out weaknesses of the known commodity. Also, we aren’t talking about stuck in their ways veteran NBA players. There’s this thing called coaching and helping young college players work on their weaknesses whether it be defense, ball handling, shooting etc.. Moore appeared to be a very hard worker on his shooting. What he needs is to balance out that hard work to focus on other things, in his case, primarily defense. The problem isn’t the players but with our lack of coaching up players, S&C (which was mentioned in other posts) and player development. When glue guys like Cuffe and Moore who love the program walk, we have problems deeper than individual player shortcomings.

For me, the only 2 that I want back off this roster is Donnie and Petar.
Unless JJ is willing to accept a secondary role as a Senior, he needs to move on .
In the portal get a good point guard and center. Build the team around them, Donnie and the freshman.
Get a lot of minutes for the freshman.
this sounds as if you are confident we can find someone better. and if we think we can and it doesn’t happen for some reason - now we are stuck not having a #1 and #2.

It was, I was there.

UCONN was not good and Hurley still acted like a clown.

It's who he is.

The winning he's had since doesn't change that, and doesn't validate it.

it was vs. UConn, literally the only decent game of his career here. He's another one overrated by this board, some had him as a one and done. He was here 2 years, got replaced as a starter after 2 games at PG and out injured in year 2. Went to URI and somewhere else and did nothing. Even quit basketball with a year of eligibility remaining. I expect nothing from freshmen until we actually see them perform in college.

Any portal guy we want is going to cost a lot. I hope we have a war chest.
Here’s my current list of players that I’d like Syracuse to get involved with. A few aren’t in the portal yet but I expect them all to be

•Nick Boyd 6-3 PG NY
San Diego St

•Devin Askew 6-3 PG CA
Long Beach St

•Darren Harris 6-6 SF VA
Duke

•Mackenzie Mgbako 6-9 SF NJ
Indiana

•KJ Evans 6-9 PF MD
Oregon

JP Estrella 6-11 C ME
Tennessee

Austin Rapp 6-10 PF/C AUST
Portland

JP Estrella 6-11 C ME
Tennessee

I like this name but coming off of a foot injury he couldn't be my #1 center in the portal. I wouldn't mind if he is my second center. Maybe get a senior center and then also add JP Estrella behind him. He flashed a ton and I think his skill level is high level but injury is a concern. Being counted to be the man would be a big gamble. I really like him and would bring him in.

Lots of talk about how this staff can’t develop talent. And maybe that’s true. But it seems to me the much bigger issue is that this staff is terrible at evaluating talent to begin with.

Red started his tenure here brining in three guys he had prior recruiting relationships with (Starling, Cuffe, Westry) and McLeod. All four of these guys have profound flaws in their games and only Starling has contributed.

Then last summer we brought in Freeman, Moore, Lampkin, Davis, Carlos, Taylor and Petar.

Again, all deeply flawed players. Only Lampkin and Freeman were meaningful contributors in my eyes.

11 acquisitions in two years and I’d say just three were anything more than JAGs (just another guy).
Both are true. We can’t identify and we can’t coach guys up. That’s how you end up 14-19.

You're mixing up what attracts talent in the portal.

My guess is that for the player it's 70% Money & 25% Playing time. The last 5% is something else like what you're talking, playing for a HoF coach or a winning program or developing skills.

I'm sure there'll be a study someday but until then I think we can agree that making the kind of money for NIL is life changing when you're 20 years old even just one year.

After the bag, the player needs to actually see the court to try to make it to the next level.

What's the point in playing for a great coach that develops your skills if you're buried on the bench or not getting paid.

This year we have the Money (or so we've been told) and Playing time to offer as we have 5 Srs graduating and 3 guys portaled so far. We do not have anything else to offer with coaching or winning. With the 2 big boxes to offer we can upgrade the talent.

Agreed. If we can't land kids this year with money, playing time, Melo... we should hang it up

This is true for players that we will target. You know players like JJ and Lampkin who don't really have a chance to be drafted. Those are the players we will be in the running for and will be looking for the last big payday before they go into the real world. For the top-tier players, this is false.

Its do or die time for Kline and Autry. Rebuild it or pack it in

If SU cannot get better guards that is the problem.

Feel bad for Kline, he's in a tough spot. Roster was basically set once he was hired last year.

Legit point.

I like Elijah as a prospect and I think he will be a really good player for someone. But, Red needs to build a winner THIS year. I hope that includes a restructure of our coaches, otherwise we are counting on transfers to take on the role of coach, as well. But, if JJ and Freeman are the lone returners, we have 9 possible spots to fill. If we have the money, we need 3 quality starters and 10 backups to fill. That is insane. But, we need to focus on 6 spots. 2 centers (Portal and a backup possibly a freshman), PF ( Freeman, Sadiq and portal?), SF (Portal starter, Sadiq, Womack), SG (JJ, Kyan, portal), PG (Portal, Fennell). I still think we could have found room for Moore. I think he would have been ahead of Kyan, but maybe not due to Carmello (no offense to him). We can build a competitive roster. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

To tell had far this program has fallen. The 2003 team, Forth, McNeil, at C, Melo, Hak at ,Pace. Duany, S, Gerry, Billy, G.
JJ wouldn't even play on that team.

I think my biggest fear is that Red only knows JB’s system and JB is 90% at fault for what is going on in the program right now.

That's why I think Red ought to just embrace and lean into the 2-3 zone. Just don't rely on it 100% of the time like Boeheim. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather that not be the play, but with Red as coach, that might be his best way to win more games. Instead, I think he's playing the style he "wants" but he just doesn't know how to execute or coach it that style.
