Emanuel Ross in the portal

If you were building a WR 2-deep where would you put Ross for next year?

Cook and Gill are likely locks to start. Boobie Johnson, T. Russell, Daniels, Williams all played this year and Russell looked good pre-injury. We know Fran likes to play talented guys, so C. Russell and Gough will get snaps. I bet we see more Samuel next year too.

Only so many snaps, and Ross is a guy you probably paid good money to. In this era, you have to evaluate if it’s worth it for a depth guy and who could probably get starter money elsewhere.
Russell didn't come here not to start. He and Gill will play wide with the new juco in the mix. Not sure where Gough projects but Boobie, Daniels and Williams all have big play ability and Cook with a QB should cause problems wherever they use him.

That’s nice but it’s also an outlier. You won’t be too successful of a program, consistently, relying on outliers.
Donovan McNabb 3 stars. And I'm not even trying. The 2-3 stars who end up being more are the secret. Many 4-5 stars also flame out. No one knows how someone will take that step from HS to college. Oh, here is another example in reverse. 4 star Collins. Didn't work out so well at LSU or at SU. Gill was only recruited by 2 P4 schools. But last year, they all wanted him to transfer. I am sure there are a ton of these stories. I would not worry that we are losing a 4 star who did not pan out. If he was that great, there would have been a reason to keep him.

It seems like he was better than he got to show. He dealt with injuries, but still seemed he didn’t get the run he deserved. I won’t be surprised to see him go somewhere and kill it.

Looks like Gill, Cook, Williams, Boobie will be the guys. I’m pretty bummed losing him.

As much as l like Ross he was injured as much as available in his 2 years here....availability seems to be a factor in the end of season talks with Fran Brown...jmo

I hear you, but when you look at the best teams in the country, they are loaded with four and five star players.

Both takes are Correct. You need to recruit at a high level and more often than not, those guys work out. but I don’t like when after 2 seasons, we still refer to guys by stars.

That’s not to say I didn’t want him here or think he showed potential, but if you take the stars out of the headline, I’m not sure the reaction is the same. We lost 15 catches over 2 seasons (injuries factored in as well).

I never said the opposite of any of those. Some guys work out and some don’t, regardless of stars. But statistically, guys with more stars work out at a higher rate than guys with less stars. We spend a lot of pages hoping to get guys with more stars, it’s silly to pretend we’ll be successful with a roster of 2 star players.

I mean you probably should try then, this is just silly at this point. You’re picking random 2 and 3 stars. It’s statistically proven that 4 and 5 star players are more likely to be contributors and maybe even go to the NFL. If you don’t believe in analysis and want to go on gut feeling, that’s on you. Also keep in mind there are far less 4 star and even less 5 star players. So obviously you’ll find more 3 star players overall who contribute. But that’s not the question or topic.

A 4 or 5 star player will statistically be more likely to contribute than a 2 star player. It’s a fact whether you agree with it or not.

And for those who don’t like facts here’s one of MANY pages with the statistics

I'm just making a point that losing a 4 star that has not panned out yet is not the biggest deal. I did n't analyze a whole recruiting thing, but gave some examples of both that worked out and did not. If someone is here 2 years with 4 stars, and they are not starting or a star, then no big deal if they move on. Fran is replacing him with a 5 star, Russell.

I agree. You want to recruit as many 4 or 5 stars as you can, but once a player is in college for a couple of years, his star rating coming out of high school loses its relevance.

So if some coach on the staff did some bad with Ross, then this probably has more to do with his experience in that regard and getting a fresh start versus him may or may not being on the 2 deep. Not exactly clear what happened with the coach but even if that coach is gone, if things happened he probably is looking to get away.

I don’t disagree with that at all. Once they’re here and have played in games for a couple years, their star rating largely doesn’t matter.
