After the Duke game I posted that Scott Shafer was a bad HC and good DC. Many people jumped to defend him claiming it was the injuries and schedule to blame. Yes, the injuries have been bad and the schedule was not easy but come on. Every team has injuries, we had a lot but good coaches get through injuries.

We played no OC teams that are currently in the top 25. Clemson and UofL are good but not great and FSU has played many close games and the rest of ACC schedule has been very average. Let's not make it out to be worse then it was.

We are about to win 3 games and really only deserved to win 2. How can anyone justify this? It's a complete joke. That was a GROB game today. We need to end it now. We can't afford to give him another year. We are in a much better situation now than when we hired Marrone, could get a good offensive mind.

Shafer is a great guy but is in completely over his head. The rah rah stuff just has become annoying. He's got no control over the team and lacks any idea of time management. God forbid he hires anyone besides his friends instead of someone who knows what they are doing. These D-3 coaches on offense look likes that's where they belong.

The talent is better than this. There is no talent difference between us and Duke, PITT, BC, NC ST. The coaching is the difference. To try to make a team who lacks athletes run a spread offense that depends on receivers and running backs making plays in space is just dumb. Last year we won 6 games because we ran in the box and threw only when we had to. That should have been the plan this year.

Shafer says how he wants to lock people in the dome and beat them up, he is not afraid of anyone. But he's afraid to go for it on 4th and inches in a game that means nothing? Doesn't translate. HE TALKS TOUGH, COACHES LIKE A COWARD. After that punt, I'm done. Similar to Marrones in Miami with the Bills last week.

Long story short: he needs to be fired. We can't allow this program to fall back to 2007. Not after 3 bowl games in 4 years. We are in position to hire a good coach. Do it. We can handle the money.

There were two things that happened today that I didn't understand.

1. Bringing Kimble in after Long led a respectable drive that ended after he threw a pick trying to make a play. I don't think it was bad to get Kimble in. I just don't see why you'd do it once your offense had established a bit of rhythm.

2. Punting with a 4th and 1 in decent field position in the 4th quarter when you're no longer bowl eligible.

Given the injuries, I'm fine pretty much writing off the season.

Next year though, it's pretty much zero tolerance for weird or bad decisions.

But do you have faith he can turn it around or do you want to stay the course just to stay the course. IMO we can't afford to have anther wasted year. He looks lost when it comes to any big head coach decision is required.

If it were up to me, we would pay whatever it takes to get Wilder from ODU to be our head coach.

Since the OP is about excuses, I'll add this. BC is a school with the same supposed limitations as SU being a northeastern private school. What are they doing to have a better total record than SU since the Sombrero bowl (11/27/2004)?

2005: 9-3, 5-3
2006: 10-3, 5-3
2007: 11-3, 6-2 Atlantic Champs
2008: 9-5, 5-3 Atlantic Champs
2009: 8-5, 5-3
2010: 7-6, 4-4
2011: 4-8, 3-5
2012: 2-10, 1-7
2013: 7-6, 4-4
2014: 6-5, 3-4 so far, most likely will get win #7 on Saturday

This entire post is spot on. I don't understand how anyone who went through entire GRob error can't see that Shafer is the second coming of Greg Robinson.

And by season's end, when this team will have luckily finished 3-9 instead of 2-10, all the progress that Marrone made in changing the national perception of SU being a football laughingstock will have been eradicated by the putrid product Shafer put on the field this season. We flat-out stink right now and we are right back to where we were pre-Marrone.

I just hope that this time around, the University doesn't repeat the same mistake they made by bringing GRob back for a 3rd and 4th year when it was blatantly obvious that he didn't have chops.

That's right. All momentum is gone. Changes need to be made, but they won't. Too much money. And doesn't that tell the entire story.

the entire story is a short one- hire gross -get the great groober and become a joke- hire marrone and get 20% of your product back- hire hcss and repeat the groober era-

its been shown that football drives the bus -yet gross doesnt hire a solid bus driver 2 of 3 times he hires guys who have no right to be behind the wheel- his hires have done more damage than good

nothing wrong with hiring a guy who would use us as a stepping stone- he would get the program back on solid footing and make it appealing to the next guy

su has zero appeal to anyone right now with any future in coaching - just guys who want to collect a check like our ad does

Well...

Maybe not. This is the first time that changes could be made where money WON'T be as big of an issue as it was before. Time to open up the coffers.

I just don't want Gross to be the guy making the next hire.

I understand that b/c 2 of his 3 hires have been duds. But to be fair with both of those bad hires, he didn't have many options at the time of both hires. PP was fired late in the cycle and Marrone left late in the cycle and the hope was that by promoting Shafer he'd maintain the positive momentum DM started.

In hindsight, his hope was misplaced as promoting Shafer was a mistake. I hope he doesn't compound that mistake by retaining him.

you are being a bit overly dramatic we are no where near grob days. We would struggle to beat terrible teams in grob days . this year we were beaten by attrition, acc and inexperience offensively after Hunt went down. NC State is the only game id say we lost that we were the more talented team. Pitt and Maryland have more offensive talent at skill guys otherwise its close

Our coaches had two weeks to get ready for Pitt. That game plan was awful and leads me to believe that they are not good enough to ever get the job done no matter how well they recruit. Not only that but Shafer quit yesterday with that punt. I don't want a coach to ever quit on the team because this team has not quit on him. Very unprofessional from Shafer and his staff yesterday.

we don't know how banged up some of the players playing are . 20+ are injured and probably another 10-15 playing hurt. Freshman qb makes it hard to game plan offensively. The 4th and inches punt was bad i'll give you

I didn't think the gameplan was that bad aj and kimble missed several opportunities throughout the game

Tired of the injury excuse. Plenty of programs have there starting QB go down and they continue to put a good product on the field. There are plenty of programs that start true freshman QBs and they put out a better product than we do.This isn't Long's first game. And this is Pitt who has been giving up over 40 points the last 3-4 games. The point is the coaching staff had two weeks to game plan and couldn't even keep the game competitive. Poor poor coaching I don't understand how you can defending the coaching like it is good or has been good. I don't mind the losing if we have been competitive in the games fact is we get blown out almost every week. That is coaching not injuries.

we were competitive in nearly every game this year except pitt. This year Hunt was a big loss with 3 freshman qbs with no experience. Pitt 40 points plus given up are a bit misleading. Against GT there offense turned it over 5 times in there own territory and unc is a really good offense

That is so over the top.

It's a bad season. The offense has been bad to horrible all year but this program is not back to where it was under Robinson, that's ridiculous.

The roster is much, much better. The defense is good and the offense was able to run well and generate yards, if not points, until Hunt got hurt.

There's no need for wholesale changes, the focus needs to be fixing the offense.

Yes, but is Lester the answer to that? Hard to think he is, or better said, hard to think he is the best available.

The punt was inexcusable. Period

im still wondering why we saw Kimble.

Why is Welsh playing so much? Why aren't we seeing Ron Thompson? Why the short kick? Why hire your friends? (chuck has been good this year)

Hey, the younger guys are very good! Too bad it seems like an old boys club on the team though...

ron Thompson is being forced to play lots of DT . Short kick did you see the first return of the game and or the 3 or 4 other returns we have given up

if we are working within the same football coaching staff budget He maybe. This year is a complete waste except getting some young guys some experience

fix the offense and evaluate the injuries and see if we need to change something with our strength and conditioning program
