ESPN3+ AppleTV/Roku, etc...

Mark,

My ESPN friend is coming over tomorrow night to hook up his appletv to my TV. He swears by it. Part of his job is working on all things espn3. He knows his stuff. If it works well, and I trust it will, I will buy one for myself. He forecasts many days in the future this will crop up again. I might even invite Erv Philips over to watch the game. He's a few towns over and can't get the game either.

I don't endorse too many things, but Apple TV is a great buy. Highly recommend it.

Ok tech guys:

1. I have access to ESPN3
2. I'm not in a Blacked Out area this weekend
3. I'm too tech stupid to make ESPN3 work through my Interet BlueRay Player (no app and can't make the URL work)
4. I have no Apple products
5. My TV is about 10' from my computer but not practical to wire it the laptop or router
6. My TV isn't Smart
7. My wife will de-nut me if I buy 50" Smart TV
8. I will not buy an XBox...I don't play video games

I don't want to friggin watch the game on my 14" laptop. I want to stream it on my LED TV.

What is cheapest way for me to stream?

AppleTV, Roku, Google TV????

Can I download an app to my BlueRay and add it? I heard ESPN app is exclusive to Samsung BlueRay. I think I have a Sony.

Please don't make fun of me for being tech stupid.

Mark, are you in San Antonio? If so, Matt Sarz's site is saying that the game will be on OTA network KCWX-5.

when i run it it looks the same as what i see.. sometimes espn3 is great sometimes not, but it mirrors the computer it starts on. you can also choose 3 levels of streaming to get the best quality.

the nice thing about the chromecast is no wires and you can stream to any tv from any computer within seconds. i have a 24" tv that i throw out on the deck and i can stream to it from my computer 50ft away in the basement. you want to watch on a different tv just unplug the chromecast and move it to another tv again no wires..

It is on KCWX 5-2 (the sub channel). It isn't on my TW lineup (only 5-1). The station is so weak I can't pull it in OTA either. Usually the ACC game is on the main channel carried by TW but this week they put the SMU game on the main channel and the ACC game on the subchannel.

I'm going to wait a few weeks on buying anything. Saturday I'm going to plug my Wireless Laptop into the TV...and run ESPN3. Ok so I have sound coming out my laptop but just video on the TV. I'm running an HDMI cable from the laptop to the computer...why no sound on the TV?

Ask him if they plan to ever crack down on sharing ESPN log in's?

I have an Apple TV. It's an HDMI cable to your TV. The Watch ESPN app is on there, and it is HD quality. It is simple to use, and fantastic. You do not need to download Safari, or any other web browser. Apple TV would just be one of your HDMI ports on your TV. Switch to it, turn it on and it connects to your wireless connection. It's seriously just about the easiest install you can imagine. Get it, you won't be disappointed. If you subscribe to HBO you also get HBO Go and can watch any movie or series ever on HBO. I'm just starting The Wire.

Buy the hdmi cable off amazon for twenty bucks. Plugging and unplugging for the occasional game will take you 20 seconds.

I have Apple TV and it is great. Watch ESPN is on there, Hulu Plus and Netflix as well, plus other content providers.

It's $99 new, plus you can display content from your iphone or ipad if you have them.

I'm far from an Apple fanboy, but I really enjoy have an Apple TV. In fact, we are buying a second one.

Sign up for a personal VPN. $60 / year at hidemyass.com. You can also go month to month for a bit more if you wish.

Game blacked out in San Antonio on espn3? No problem. Setup VPN for Los Angeles (or other non-blacked out area.) Then connect. Happy non-blacked out game watching.

.

Will this work for NFL games too?

Before you buy anything, unplug the coaxial cable from your cable box and plug it directly into your tv. Hit the auto program button on your tv remote (make sure you choose cable in your auto program settings). You should be able to get 5.2 that way. You'll also be shocked at how much better the OTA channels look this way.

Assuming you're using Win7: Go to Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Manage Audio Devices (under Sound). Find the HDMI output and set this as the default output. You may have to disable the computer speakers setting first. When you're done, just set default back to the computer speakers.

Get a new wife??

Ok, go with Apple TV. You do have WiFi, right?

You can connect Apple TV to a widescreen enhanced definition or high definition TV that has:

  • An HDMI port using an HDMI cable for both video and audio

    • or
  • Component video (Y, Pb, and Pr) ports using a component video cable with green, blue, and red connectors, and an audio cable

    • or
  • DVI port using an HDMI-to-DVI cable for video and audio cable

    • or
  • You can also connect Apple TV to a home theater receiver.

mark...just tell the wife your going out for milk and bread and somehow you ended up in Atlanta;)

and respond by saying I didn't tell you where as you no longer like local milk

The sub digital channel I want is not offered by Time Warner and it is too weak for me to pull in with my OTA antenna. Are you telling my by running an autoprogram (selecting Cable vs Air) with the TW cable going directly in my TV (bypassing the cable box) it will somehow pick up this OTA channel? This sounds fishy.

Well the good news I only had to get rid of a 25" old school RCA tv when we went to HDTV...we never got one of those 35" monstrosities or gigantic rear projection things. No wants old school tv's anymore.

Mark, Depending on how old your HDTV is, this will work. My understanding is that your TV has to have a Qam tuner in order to receive over the air (OTA) digital channels from your local broadcasters. If your HDTV is less than 5-6 years old, you probably do have a Qam tuner. The reception will be better than what you get from your cable box. Try it!

There is another option if that does not work. Let me know.

Ok I'll try it tonight when I get home...I'll let you know.

BTW, I have a 42" Vizio LED TV about 3 years old.

Keep in mind mark you'll need some sort of wifi in your house to do Apple tv (or any other I believe too). Was about to pull the trigger up at the camp before decided to go with direct tv from the comments here. I could have done it but then would have to do it through my ipad/iphone which would have been too great a data suck so I bagged it.

That's interesting because so far even though I love chromecast, the casting from inside of the browser has not been that great, esp when the sources comes from a stream. It's usually pretty choppy, and I have ran it with plenty of ram, and a very good graphics card. I have been waiting from them to tweak and improve it.

What is this "wefee" thing? My 19" old Black and White is just fine. Hey get off my lawn. :blah:

Yeah I have RoadRunner and Wi-Fi...think I'm going to pull the trigger and get the Apple TV now...going to first try 007's suggestion first.

BTW, thanks everyone for helping through this process...I know there are probably 100 lurkers out there getting help to with this thread.

Xmas is just around the corner. I see a Black Friday smart TV in your immediate future.....

Get the Sports Package on DirecTV CR, and you'll never miss an SU football game. I haven't yet and I've been living in Virginia for four years. Same goes for SU basketball.

thanks man, it get installed tommorow and I think I got it as part of it. If not I will!

chromecast works with anything that chrome browsers can display.. it had built in support for netflix/youtube. i have used it with espn3 with no problem. it requires a wireless network so as long as the tv has an hdmi input and is somewhat near the WAP it will work.. took about 5 min to get running.

chromecast works great with youtube and netflix but i've found that casting anything through the browser isn't very useful
