ESPN3+ AppleTV/Roku, etc...

chromecast works great with youtube and netflix but i've found that casting anything through the browser isn't very useful
I had stuttering and sound issues until i did the tweaks.. now it works great

Mark,

I just got an AppleTV setup with HDMI cord thru my USAA credit card rewards. I used 14000 of my credit card points. I assume also being an air force guy you use USAA.

Damn did you stalk my living room? LOL

:D I just did a google search on "3 year old Vizio LED" One of the first links was Amazon.

Don't tell me I guessed your zipcode, though...

Well I bought the Apple TV...so far it looks fantastic. Watching the replay of NCSt. Gotta say the pic quality is near HD...I have 1080P LED Edge Lit.

It took me 5 mins to set up...I had to load my wireless password, then log on the computer to activate...pretty simple. This thing can pay for itself as you could get rid of a cable box in your "Man Cave" and stream through Apple TV.

Not really. If you "cut the cord" you will no longer have access to ESPN. Enjoy your Apple TV. FWIW, Apple is rumored to be announcing some major new enhancement to Apple TV on 10/22. You might want to return yours after this weekend and check into that.

Yeah I know I was talking about returning an extra box.

Got it, good idea. Run your cable directly to the TV in the man cave as we mentioned before and you will pick up all the local OTA digital channels.

I know I could do that...but the cable would run across a walkway/stairs. I want to keep things clean and not constantly plugging/deplugging. I want to move beyond 2002.
Why would you want to do that? 2002 was a good year and the beginning of a great basketball season.

I didn't see this thread until today but I wanted to mention this is incredibly useful info.
By the time I learn something new about tvs and the internet, it's already outdated.

i'll be the first to ask...do you get free p o r nn:)

what's the difference between roku and apple

First question to ask? Can you get ESPN3 on your computer? If no then the value goes down. The second issue is many of the ESPN3 broadcasts are now blacked out in CNY according to the maps I've seen...so you would need to get an Internet Spoofer...as for the last thing...not sure.

Yes ... See my pm to you.

Or, just use Hotspot Shield for VPN and watch any Cuse game no matter if it is blocked. I do this for free to watch Syracuse basketball and football now that I'm in ACC country and most of these games are blacked out in my area.

How much does it cost? Annual or monthly fee?

I just use the free version to watch the game. Initially, the elite version launches and you get to watch with the elite version the first time. Subsequently, it will always try to launch with the elite version and get you to pay, but if you back out of that, it will launch the free version and you can use it to your heart's content. I haven't checked to see what you get with the elite vs. the free (probably just no ads; the ads appear at the top of the browser page, and I can live with this). Down here in North Carolina, the VPN usually places me in Pennsylvania first. If I try again, I'm in California and I can watch most any game.

I also uninstall the program after use and just reinstall it when I need it.

it will be interesting to see how long ESPn lets stuff like hotspot work. i know the nfl has shut down many of them and its not hard to do. maybe they have no incentive to do so.

The Roku box is overall preferred by most reviewers to the Apple box unless you are tethered to the Apple ecosystem and own iPhones and iPads etc. More apps can be found on it and you can add private channels, with every kind of content available. Roku has wifi only boxes and I have one that offers a wired connection.

I also have a Chromecast but use that primarily to run Google Music through my main stereo - since it does not require me to turn on my projector/tv - you control it through your smartphone. The casting feature from Chrome can work well depending on your computers components and your wifi connection. Google still considers it an experimental feature at this time so expect improvements.

Even though I have an Xbox and a PS3, I normally watch Netflix, Amazon etc through my Roku. I highly recommend it.

I agree. This is why after I typed all of that, I thought it would be good to delete my posts:)
