Extend Fran?

I think you underestimate what you don't know and what it takes to retain current players versus going out and paying for new ones. Fran's first year was totally different, he kept ( paid) the players he needed from Dino's teams and went out and used resources to find new ones and make a splash. He's focused on the long term, which means retaining the players HE recruited and believes can develop into productive players on the depth chart.

On the surface, sure anyone would want to add some key pieces on defense. You throw around the term "overspending" like the program has unlimited resources. Choices need to be made much like NFL GM's when dealing with a salary cap. Fran also indicated they would not be as active in the portal and many did not take the statement for what it was, which to me looks like the truth.

It's the route Fran went, is it super exciting for fans? No and I understand the angst but again it's not like they have unlimited resources, decisions need to be made. Not sure it will really matter with the schedule ahead. Not loving the route is one thing, not understanding the rationale behind it is another because it's pretty safe to say any recruiting HS or portal that gets fans excited comes at a cost.

And the team he is building is going to be something really really special in 2026.

It's all about the buyout, in two ways.

1) I haven't seen it reported what another suitor would have to pay to poach Deion. If it's not a lot, it's just a raise but doesn't ensure security. That's a key component.

2) We got stuck with Dino for too long because his extension after the 2018 season made it hard to buy him out. Need to make that reasonable or see results long-term enough to not have to fear a one-year wonder.

Any buyout would be barely a speed bump to an SEC team if they really wanted to hire Fran. Thinking a buyout “protects” the school from losing a coach is unrealistic - which means an extension after one season is unnecessary.

I think we need to temper our expectations for 2025. A much harder schedule. An unknown quarterback. An offensive line that is improving but "not there" yet.
He has shown enough. What does he need to do? 5 to 7 wins is realistic but he may pull more. We have not seen this level of recruiting in a couple of decades.

I don't ever remember this level of recruiting,
the depth of the players Fran is bringing in is amazing.
We have gotten high end players before but filled the roster with a lot less talent then what Fran is getting.

If he does well this year I do it. With this schedule, if he wins 8 games, I probably give him a very lucrative extension that is very expensive to get out of

It’s not about stopping him from going. You’re right, any SEC team if he wants to go and is willing to pay will take him.

It’s about securing financial security for Syracuse and ensuring we can hire another coach who will continue the trajectory that Coach Fran is on

My knee-jerk reaction is to say, "Yes, yes, yes. Sign him long term."
But things change. Systems (for recruiting and coaching) that work today, may not be as effective tomorrow. So much depends on how HCFB evolves in the coming years and adjusts to unforseen changes in the football landscape. Is DART resilient enough to adapt and be as effective, especially in the minds of youngsters?
In short, locking Fran up for the next 20 years isn't a sound business decision.
I say show the love, provide the support - admin and fans - and keep the coaches as accountable as they do the athletes.

There is no doubt that Fran is not a good, but a GREAT thing for SU football.

Yes, next season will probably be a step back in terms of W's due to the loss of McCord and the tough schedule.

So what, Fran has significantly upgraded the talent and he has the process.

SU is probably never going to be right at the top of the ACC every season, but maybe we can always be top third with the occasional big season, Fran can accomplish that.

I say sign him up for as long a term as he is willing to commit to.

Dino never wanted to and was never going to make Syracuse his home. Dino wanted to go back West badly. He never invested in the community beyond the minimum. He was always out of here the minute the opportunity arrived. Fran on the other hand is from here. He has roots a few hours away. He is much younger and has a young family. He is invested here and in one year has done more in the community that Dino did during his entire run. I along with many on this board wanted Dino for life. He did great things in resurrecting our program and was by all accounts a very good man. He checked so many boxes other than the one that truly matters. He didn't and was never going to make Syracuse his home. That cannot be overcome. Fran as stated is the polar opposite. I believe that as long as he is supported by the community, he is all Syracuse. He doesn't want to leave. For him to leave would be very difficult. So, he checks the most important box for himself and his family. I hope that the administration realizes this and I hope that prior to whatever year JW decides to retire Fran is provided with a very long-term deal.
While all of that is true, none of that has anything to do with the fact that Dino wasted a future NFL talent and benched him because he didn't know how to use him properly. Seeing DeVito in a Giants uniform, even as a backup, shows me what a colossal fumble Dino made with him. Shafer was great for the community, but failed on the sideline. The only thing that really matters is whether Fran can recruit, develop, and be a good gameday coach. We haven't had all 3 of those in while.

Sometimes u just know a guy has it. I’d lock him up long term.
McCord has it. Will most likely be drafted higher than Nassib. Time will tell with Fran. Be patient padawan.

If we are punching above our weight class come early to mid October, you sign him to an extension IMO with a pretty sizeable buyout.

I don't see a rush to do so. I am interested to see how we do without McCord.
Well, he got what he came for. Here’s hoping he is as successful as Mr. McCord.

Agree with all of these. I'm a huge fan of Fran Brown but we need more than a one year sample size with elite talent at QB. Next year will be telling. I'd take a bowl game and set us up for a special season the following year.

Fans were worried about losing Dino after one good season 2018…then were despondent as that extension was an anchor preventing an earlier coaching change. So we’re back in the same situation with a coach who has had one good season - what the likelihood the same AD who went with an extension last time does so again this time?

Games 1 and 4 will tell us if last season was some kind of fluke.
If we are competitive against Tenn and Clemson...beat one of them on the road,
LOCK
HIM
UP
!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me that Coach Fran had/has a vision of how a program WILL/should be run.
Quality coaching staff, involvement in the community, encouraging a "spiritual" side for the players,
...and the DART philosophy, your son is going to be a "stronger person" , inside and out, 4 years after
he steps foot on campus.
It's looking like Wildhack was beyond fortunate to "take the call".

And it looks like Fran has no intention of a throwaway year.
He was disappointed he didn't get enough wins to make thev final 12.
It looks like he wants the opportunity to possibly get there this year .
He may not make it because of the tough schedule, but it looks like he is doing everything possible to try.

Id extend.

Even if the results stutter step, be continues to bring in the right kind of recruits. Some will work, some won't, but to be able to consistently get this level of recruits guarantees we will always have a chance.

This is all we can ask for.
