Just some thoughts and observations from the Marquette game…
Fab Melo fouled out…but not before making sure Marquette also had foul trouble:
When playing a team that plays so physically like Marquette, it’s important to not only rise to their level of tough play, but also to take advantage of their aggressiveness by drawing fouls. Being in good position on defense and being smartly aggressive on offense to draw fouls on such a team not only gets you into the bonus quicker, but also forces them to sub more for their good players.
In this respect, Fab Melo was really good yesterday, especially by drawing charges on defense. Just take a look at all the fouls Fab drew (and also the 2 early (BS) “fouls” called against Fab…my thoughts below on those):
1st Half:
19:23 – Melo took charge #1 – foul on Gardner
18:48 – Foul on Melo – his #1 – Really soft call, especially with how physical rest of game was.
18:24 – Foul on Melo – his #2 – got tangled with a Marquette player after a rebound, Marquette player flopped big time and call was made. Two quick fouls…shockingly soft, compared to rest of game.
10:51 – Melo took charge #2 – foul on Gardner, who was driving the lane, passed, and couldn’t stop before running into Melo, who was in perfect position to get this call.
10:17 – Fab fouled on offensive end – fouled by Wilson while attempting shot
9:26 – Melo took charge #3 – foul on Crowder, who was driving baseline.
8:37 – Melo took charge #4 – foul on Mayo, who was driving.
2nd Half:
15:23 – Fab fouled on offensive end – fouled by Crowder while driving to hoop & attempting shot.
Overall, Fab (in 18 mins of playing time) was responsible for causing 6 Marquette fouls, including taking 4 charges on defense!
Note that both Gardner & Crowder ended the game with 4 fouls each, so their playing time was impacted (by being benched/playing not to foul). Fab caused 2 on each player.
Some interesting numbers from the box score (both good & bad):
Fab had 8 rebs in 18 mins. Fair had 8 rebs. Triche had 7 rebs.
Waiters went 4/4 on free throws (all in 2nd half). Shooting 71% on season.
Scoop finished as team leader in “What”s, with (at least) 3. (Note, “What”s are not an official stat, yet should be. You know these plays…when they cause you to yell “What?” at the screen.
Joseph had 4 rebs in 38 mins. In comparison, Southerland had 3 rebs in only 9 mins.
Nice total line: Dion Waiters, 12 pts on 40% shooting, 7 asts, 4 rebs, 3 stls, 2 to in 28 mins.
Poor total line: Scoop Jardine, 3 pts on 20% shooting, 3 asts, 0 rebs, 0 stls, 6 to in 24 mins.
Lastly:
Darius Johnson-Odom is a nice player. If he only had a neck, he would be (at least) 1-2 inches taller, and have more NBA potential. Ah, such is life.
