Two yellows in one game = red card. Player is out for the remainder of that game and the next.Nope. Any time a red is given, that player misses the next match.
Two yellow cards accumulated over the course of multiple games from group play to the quarterfinals results in the player missing the next match.
For example: Jermaine Jones got a yellow against Portugal. If he gets one yellow against Germany, he would stay in the game but have to sit out the Round of 16 match should we advance.
A ref can also issue a "straight red" like what we saw in this Italy game. In that case, FIFA reviews the foul and may hand out additional match suspensions if it is particularly harsh. For example: In 1994, Brazilian player Leonardo was given a red card for elbowing US midfielder Tab Ramos in the skull. Ramos spent three months in a hospital and Leonardo's suspension was so long that he just retired from international play. EDIT: My memory is fuzzy (I'm getting old) Leonardo was suspended for the rest of the '94 World Cup, but he played several more years for Brazil.
