The final Men’s DI Media Poll has been unveiled with Notre Dame as the No. 1 after hoisting the program’s first NCAA Championship.
The Irish started No. 5 in the preseason and were expected to be a contender after a year in which they were left out of the NCAA Tournament. They played inspired from the first game in mid-February vs. Marquette, knocking off the likes of preseason Top 10 teams Georgetown, Maryland and Ohio State in the early part of the season.
Virginia was their only misstep — twice, actually — but the Irish avenged those losses in the NCAA Semifinals. They beat every team on their schedule and handed 10 teams their worst loss of the season.
The final Media Poll largely reflects the NCAA Tournament field. NCAA Runners-Up Duke is at No. 2, followed by Virginia and Penn State from Championship Weekend. Quarterfinalists Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Army and Michigan are after that. First Round participants Maryland, Cornell, Princeton, Yale and Delaware follow.
Denver is the first team that was not in the NCAA Tournament field, finishing the season No. 14 in Bill Tierney’s last run.
