Fire Autry

Are we talking about the same Jim Boeheim, who had Derrick Coleman, Billy Thompson, Laron Ellis, and Stevie Thompson on the same team...and didn't win a chip? That Coach B? We are all nostalgic and yearn for the good ole days...this new era requires a different combination of factors to field successful teams...and what we think of as "great coaching", isn't as important anymore as is the ability to identify talent, have the ability to PAY Talented PlAYERS and retain them. With rosters changing every year, it is much harder to develop chemistry and develop future talent. Is Duke's coach a great coach? Who knows, it may look like that, but one thing is certain is that Duke keeps attracting high level talent and they only lose that talent to the NBA and not to other teams in the transfer portal. Unless we enhance our money stream, Syracuse like, many other programs, will continue to just be inconsistent and average compared to past standards, independent of who is coaching. That is a hard pill to swallow and accept...but that is what this current situation suggests...You can see it already in college football with the retooling of all the top teams...Miami..Indiana...Ole Miss- who has stolen our entire starting wide receiver group for next year- Why?- Deeper pockets!!
Those great 80s and 90s teams made big runs in the tourney or at least made the tourney. Syracuse hasn’t even made the NCAAs in four years!

I have come to the conclusion that the posters on this site are just fans and don't know Shizit about basketball. Some of these comments about what you think a coach can or can't do relative to in game strategy is laughable. I pose this question to all of the so called hoops experts in the 315: Was Coach B.oeheim a good coach? If so, why didn't he continue to win big in the later stages of his career? Did he forget how to coach? Were the quality of players not the same? Did the changing landscape of College Basketball prevent him from making the necessary adjustments to remain successful?
“Were the quality of players not the same? Did the changing landscape of College Basketball prevent him from making the necessary adjustments to remain successful?”
Yes and yes. He started failing on the recruiting trail because of lack of effort, old age (couldn’t relate to players as well) and lack of aggressiveness in restocking rosters year to year. He left it to Hop and the staff to develop and nurture the relationships with high school and AAU coaches and prospects. Pumped the brakes with Hop and the staff on difference making prospects like Brunson, Monte Morris, SGA, and more. Then Hop left for Washington and the wheels fully came off the recruiting operation.

He also failed to adjust once the zone wasn’t working effectively anymore against 3-point shooters and prevented us from competing for the top recruits because we played 100 percent zone, which is bad for the top college kids who want to get to the NBA. Then he failed to adjust to the portal and players having more power.

If Syracuse University is serious about basketball, what happens the rest of the season should not matter. They have seen more than enough to make a decision on Autry's capabilities as HC. Even a miracle run should not change that decision.
Yes,Ok. If we make a miracle run and win the National Championship, it should not change our opinion. If we are serious about basketball, he should be canned. Makes total sense to me.

Miracle run? That’s like 15 miracles all wrapped into one. We’d also have to worry about how many souls had been sold to the devil to make that happen.

What coach is he better than on game day in the ACC?

The one that just beat him…….

I don’t care enough about the program to hate Red or anyone involved. I just want to be interested again.
After ardently following football and basketball my entire life (and I was a fan who sat in Manley as kid and watched the dome be built) the reality is setting in that the true glory days of sustained success probably are over in this new world and it is time as Buzz Shaw once encouraged to go get a life. You need a great coach and deep pockets for any sort of sustained success and some form of roster stability. Even Duke with all of their resources just had their 2026-2027 football season trashed.

depends on how that school achieved their glory days. A historically terrible football program just won a national championship last night after a dominant run through really good programs with a career mid-major coach and a bunch of misfit players who were mostly never well recruited - but they do not routinely make mistakes. The days where a UCLA could just take the very best college players and keep them for 4 years IS over. But I think well-run programs will still sustain success. I've probably posted a variation of this before, but it was a line in one of my management classes and it has stuck with me for a while: A great team/company is built on innovation and well-vetted processes, a struggling company relies on heroic performances from individual contributors/employees.

For example, Syracuse basketball of the last decade has been a mess and everyone, AD, head coaches, etc are pointing fingers at everyone else, there's been zero accountability and generally the players have been taking the blame despite them not being here for the whole time. The only consistent thing about SU basketball program has been inconsistent leadership. Syracuse has been relying on heroic performances from individual players.

Whatever. I understand you all hate Autry (as a coach) and want him gone.
I don't hate anyone, love how Red was as a player, but Syracuse was at one time a big time program.
Red has proven since he started that he isn't capable of getting Syracuse back there, so it's time to move on.
