Fire Autry

This is absolutely right. Boeheim was being a petulant ass in the media at every opportunity. This was the time of his famous press conference tirade, "I decide when I am finished coaching, nobody else." That, IMO, was the final straw with the Board.

Agreed [although not sure about the BoT, but I do 100% believe that was the final straw with the AD].

They didn’t account for Red being a poor on-court coach. To that point, if Gerry was the Hall of Fame coaches pick, Idk why they chose to override that based on… seniority? If you’re going to do the cheap and easy thing, at least fully commit to it.

Well, the elephant in the room is Red was the Associate HC, not Gerry, and leapfrogging Autry to hire Gerry would have set off media firestorms from people like Stephen A. Smith talking about the racism in passing over a black man with seniority to hire an unproven white guy.

"We know the Autry hiring was dictated by JB"

We were told here that JB lobbied for Gerry... not Autry.

Yes, and they couldn't hire Gerry over Autry when Autry had seniority and is a person of color without facing a shitstorm of bad publicity for passing over the Associate Head Coach to hire somebody with noticeably less experience.

I think what Matt says here is something people should pay attention to.

Very good point.

Years ago I worked for a company that was about to start union contract negotiations. For some reason, the union leadership decided to have an "informational picket" before negotiating started to try to drum up local support. Ended up in the papers (which still existed) and on the local TV news. Our lead negotiator was so giddy he was almost dancing in the halls - they'd played their best card before we even started negotiating, making the company look bad. It did not turn out to be a good decision by union leadership - throwing your cards on the table just at the betting is about to start isn't a great way to win.

JB effectively did the same thing, the BOT wanted this to be a graceful exit with limited PR issues. JB exploded a PR bomb in their laps - at that point a graceful exit was off the table so telling him "you're done, bye bye" was finally on the table. I suspect if he'd said "I serve as coach at the pleasure of the BOT, its up to them to decide if I coach next year" - he would have gotten enough support on the BOT to leverage himself another year of coaching.

The Fire Autry thread has reached 100 pages and we still have 6 week left in the season. I’m not sure it will hit 200 before he’s actually fired as it seems like apathy is setting in among posters.

Yes, agree. Good point. I forgot about Hop. Who he screwed by not retiring. I presume when Buddy developed into being a potential D1 player Hop knew it was over for him there, at least at any time soon.
People forget how pissed JB was that he lost those 101 wins and dropped below 900. The reason he stayed and ruined the Hop transition was partially the wins and partially coaching Buddy. I heard the reason that JW allowed JB to stay after Buddy graduated was because of JB’s pursuit of attaining 1000 wins (again). Problem was, it took much longer for him to get the wins than expected (because we were so bad). JB is lucky he got the 1000th win when he did because JW was not keeping him for another season. I think if JB hadn’t lost the wins, he may have been content to watch Buddy play rather than coach him. He loved hiding in the stands at AAU games and watching him. My son is the same age as Buddy and even played an AAU season with him in 8th grade (until
Buddy broke his arm).

That whole time in SU bball history was a cluster. No way was JB going to let the NCAA dictate his record or when he had to leave. I’m pretty sure the transition plan was announced when it was to placate the NCAA. When the time for the handover came, JB said “screw the NCAA” and decided he was sticking around. It just so happened that Buddy became a legit D1 talent, and he dug in on his decision to stay. And Hop once said in an interview that he never wanted to be looked at as the person who “forced JB out.” That’s why he left.

So we are where we are due to many factors.
