A Facebook memory popped up just now… 14 years ago today I took my then-4 year old son to MSG to watch us beat the snot out of St. John’s. The Garden was at least 75% SU fans. Fab Melo threw down a thunderous dunk in the second half and the place exploded.

Man, I really miss that. It’s been ages since there was that kind of excitement surrounding the program.

I remember that game as sort of a coming out for MCW who also had a breakaway dunk. Great memories.

Ha, you're being kind with the "never usually playing more than 8-9"comment. Perhaps, in those 'ol "cupcake city" 'never leaving the Dome before new year's' days. Come conference play and post season games, he typically played 6, 7 tops, relative to "meaningful" minutes.

Rick Barnes had Kevin Durant, NPOY at Texas, along with 3 other future NBA players on that squad.

And couldn’t even get past the opening weekend of the Big Dance.

Talent is important, but coaching also matters.

PS - you left out Fab getting suspended in 2012.
That was another team that had what it took to win a Natty.

And them playing like dog pooh in the 2013 final 4 game against Michigan. The score of that game was something like 57-53 I think

But the tournament is all that matters. It’s hilarious the mental gymnastics some people did. And in some ways continue to do. But at this point, it’s pretty damn hard. Even for them.

To put that in perspective, men’s basketball just entered its Dino Babers era if we use our last tourney as an 8 seed and Coach P’s termination as the same measuring stick.

I feel bad for Red. It's not like he is not trying. Still bleeds Orange. It's no secret what will happen at the end of the season. I expect he will continue to handle himself with class when asked about this stuff.

Honestly I hope he doesn’t internalize it because it’s not really about him. He was taught how to do things a certain way that really doesn’t apply as much as it used too. It’s about Syracuse adjusting to the modern game on and off the court. I think off the court he has done a great job adapting, but on the court, it’s just not good enough results wise for all the work going on off the court. I hope there is a path where people are able to appreciate him for the good and somewhat forget the bad. Again, I truly believe if this is it and it feels like it is, he has set up the next coach in a much better position than what he inherited.

UNC hired Matt Doherty that was pretty bad. It happens to every school. You spend some time in the woods and when the glory returns it makes things that much sweeter.

The moment he’s let go he doesn’t stop being an alum and a beloved Orangeman. He just happened to be given a shot to coach the program and it didn’t work out. Shouldn’t be a single negative thought his way again as someone else takes the helm.

The old "JB prefered GMac" rumor is so old it's grown hair by now.

Nobody has ever provided a video or a link to a story that backs it up.

I think it's just message board BS.

“My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw JB holding hands with GMac at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.”

I don’t recall which off-season it was, but JB advocated for Gerry to be his successor, and received feedback that it wasn’t going to be Gerry.

He told Gerry something to the effect of “I can’t do anything about it, I’ve lost the board.” Meaning the board was no longer going to let him influence the decision- which frankly pissed JB off.

I believe Gerry advocated for himself up until the very end and I know he was VERY mad he didn’t get the job.

The offseason leading up to Red’s first season was rocky between Red & Gerry before eventually smoothing out.

Also, SU's identity wasn't the Big East. Our identity was Syracuse. It was high-scoring, alley-ooping, zone-defending, 33,000 in the Carrier Dome.

Besides, the Big East of today doesn't resemble the Big East of 2013, or 2003, or 1993, or 1983. Put our current roster with our current coach in the BE and we're still a .500 team.

The big east started w the opening of the carrier dome.

We were regional and become national w those 2 moments in time. It’s the identity that carried us through the 80s-90s-00s

Once we removed one part of that stool it fell apart identity wise. Sure it’s not the same but it wasn’t the same in 2010 either.

Players like to play regionally regardless of what we like to think. Parents care too.

The program suffered as a result. Not saying it can reverse but we pretend it doesn’t matter we don’t play at msg or playing providence/georgetown/uconn anymore

I believe you Jake but why would wildhack go rogue and hire a guy who the hc thought wasn’t as prepared? Was there some DEI pressure on wildhack at the time to do this?

I truly don’t get that boeheim had all this soft power and the single biggest decision they went rogue w the guy who had a strong opinion.

We are marketable. We just need to win. There’s a bunch of alums on the sidelines because we keep sucking. There’s locals who’ve given up tickets only because we suck. Those first Duke/Syracuse games were one of the highest rated regular season cbb games on ESPN ever. And JB was still getting players until he got lazy which coincided with Tyus Battle arriving.

Not to mention there’s other teams that left their comfortable conferences and are doing great. Arizona and UCLA come to mind. It’s just an excuse for terrible coaching we’ve had for a decade.

JB had chances to right the ship with the Covid sweet 16 team, but with the no sit transfer rule we moved to daddy ball and lost guys who could go other places without sitting. This is entirely self inflicted.

Just 2 guys from drivable distances to Storrs. Honestly, their roster looks like a far better fit for the ACC than the Big East.
