The 2024 season is over. It was special and we can bask in the glow for a while.

But we also need to start thinking about the future. Let’s discuss the building of the new 105 man roster for 2025.

According to OX’s seminal post, here is where we are currently:

Returning players: 59 or 60*
December signees: 34
Spring verbals: 1
Incoming transfers: 6

This adds up to 100 or 101. The wildcard here is J’Ondre Reed, who is apparently coming back but may or may not play for Syracuse.

My understanding is that LeQuint Allen may still return and in fact is now leaning that way.

That means we have between 100 and 102 scholarships already accounted for right now.

As far as I know, we have not heard from Petry or Bradford. If both opt to come back and SU wants them, we could be down to 1 scholarship still available.

Now we all know there will be some attrition. Someone will get into grade issues, or do something foolish and have to leave. And some will definitely be told they are not in the plans to play and either decide to opt out or be convinced it would be in their self interest to opt out. Looking over the returnees, there aren’t a ton of players that do not belong.

I am thinking most that leave will go because they want to play and don’t see it happening soon at SU.

I assume everyone on the team has a talk with Coach Brown after the season to discuss the future. That talk will be a key for some to decide what they are going to do. I assume those talks have not happened for many but will soon. And that might drive more players to announce they are going into the portal.

I will be very interested to see what happens with Reed, Bradford and Petry. And what additional players we take from the portal.

It is clear we want to add at least one tackle. I thought we wanted to add an OG and a center as well but with the JUCO ruling, maybe not. I think we surely want to add at least one linebacker and probably a couple players who play safety or CB, If Allen does not return, I would think we will add an RB. Sure looks like they have been trying to do this.

We might have room to,take all the JUCO guys back and address other needs. Especially if we love some of our young interior OL players.

Thoughts?

*=depending on if Reed comes back to Syracuse

Done!

I moved the better thread instead. The one that breaks everything down by position groups, and lists the portals.

It will work out because it has to but I think we are oversubscribed at the moment based on commits and guys that could come back. If they want portal upgrades it’s going to be musical chairs time.

Think we are pretty much set going into winter workouts and spring ball. Fran may bring in a couple more before spring because freshman are not coming until July. I see more movement of the current roster after spring ball. Almost all the walkons will leave unless the ncaa makes an exception for walkons already on the team as an exception to the 105 but not any future walkons.

If all 3 JUCO lineman want back in we have to don’t we? Returning 4 of 5 starting OL would really help out a new QB.

Well only if the OL in question are good.

Or at least average.

Which, sadly, most of ours weren’t.
At least compared to ACC / P4 peers.

And Kyle made them look good by getting the ball out quickly.

That's kinda where I'm at. Experience is good, but would really love to upgrade and think we need to if we can.

I tend to agree.

I think all three were ranked at or near the bottom of the conference. If we have younger OL we think are better, or if we can get guys from the portal that are better, we should.

That said, Reed was hurt almost the whole season. He could be a Mich better player if fully healthy. Not sure what his injury was but if the staff thinks he can be -00% next season and would be a lot better we gott take a long hard look at bringing him back.

Agree about Reed. I'd like to see how he can play healthy. If we're grooming a new QB, I think it'll be key to have an experienced center and actually, even if Kyle is able to come back, it'll be nice to have a guy he is used to snapping the ball.

We also need a long snapper and an extra kicker no? Would also love to keep the fullback and we also had a couple other walkons who add value

Agreed on the experienced Center. If Reed returns and is healthy that is a great start for our 2025 oline.

Plus, he's a true center.

Gives a developmental year to the incoming frosh, will so projects to that position.

Just thinking outloud:

If LA comes back, there's only one ball to go around. I think that would possibly push Nixon or Willis out the door. All 3 of those guys would want action.

Do we know if everything with Zeed is back to normal? Is he with SU in 2025? If yes, that's great. If no, that could explain the South Carolina wr we picked up.

I recall one of the insiders indicating someone on the offense was potentially out the door. No idea who but sounded like a skill position guy. Our freshman WRs did not see the field to much, so I wonder if Ross or Hornsby may be looking. I would think Tremble is in good shape to replace OG.

Let's operate under the premise McCord is not returning. Its than a battle between JW, the LSU transfer Ricky Collins and Carney who I think is an early enrollee. It's possible one of the 3 could portal after the Spring. Also does Fran have another QB out there? If McCord returns does JW fight for #2 on depth or portal thinking Collins is in?

We have a ton of DBs. I could see a couple moving on after Spring ball.

We are lean at LB and could see some additions here.

Don’t forget Belin

That’s crazy to say the OL is average when the QB is the ACC single season pass leader at nearly 4,700 yards (giving up only 27 sacks in 592 attempts) and also a 1,000 yard rusher.). and saying it’s because McCord gets the ball out quickly is a little disingenuous. back shoulder throws to the sideline isn’t getting the ball out quickly. Meeks avg 13.1, Seam passes to OG and his overall avg 12.8. Gill averaged 18.4 ypc and all the receivers were over 11 ypc.

They got better as the season wore on and being back next year would be a strength. Why assume guys behind them who didn’t play are better?

LQA ended up averaging 4.5 for 1,021. have to give the line some credit because LaQuint isn’t exactly Jenty. 6 Running backs were picked All Conference before him..

Also took a long snapper from Wake a while ago. I think we are good on both of these fronts.
We have one but he needs to be accounted for on the 105 was my point

I believe this would be the most important thing that we could achieve short of Kyle coming back. If we keep the OL line together and LA returns our O is going to be good. Add a starting LB and lock down DB and we have a punchers chance next year
