Apparently UF is trying to reduce the buyout by saying they would play a game against Colorado State either at CSU or in Denver. The Gators haven't played a regular season non-conference game outside of the Sunshine State since 1991 at SU.

They open the 2017 season against Michigan in Jerry World. I plan to be there.

It's refreshing to see a somewhat surprise hire at a football factory.

also shows much florida brand has dropped since urban left

Yet some of the most successful hires at Florida have come from non-name programs. Urban Meyer came from Utah and Steve Spurrier from Duke.

Each year Jim McElwain's teams at Colorado State improved. He has the track record in the SEC from his days as Nick Saban's Offensive Coordinator. Florida needs substantial help on that side of the ball. He must have contacts for recruiting from Alabama. On paper to me it looks like a strong hire to me.

Colorado State fans must be frustrated as they are likely close to having a breakout season. Yet playing in the Mountain West it seems very unlikely that they will ever get a chance at the final four in football. I mean even a current Power 5 undefeated reigning national champion is struggling to stay in the playoff mix. I don't know what it would take for an undefeated "mid major" program to get any consideration. Can't blame Jim McElwain for leaving.

This is what makes the Marrone departure so frustrating to me. We were .500 when he left. This guy was a missed field goal away from a one loss season in his 3rd year. Oh well...hand to loop it back to Syracuse some how :-0

My buddy who went to UF law told me the Gators would get one of McElwain, David Cutcliffe or Hugh Freeze would get the UF job.
The guy is a Saban guy so he should do well. Good for CSU if they get a home game out of UF from it as well.

There are some big OC openings, especially in the B1G, that will likely give Roper a call.

McElwain is the perfect profile for a program like the Gators. Great OC pedigree and successful HC stint. It will be very interesting to see how he makes out. I almost want to say that if he doesn't succeed, there is something wrong with the program.

If they hire Stitt, Colorado State will be appointment tv. I still don't know what Stitt is actually doing

Good hire, for some reason I like mtn west football and have been jealous of col st season and other teams that win 7-8 games even tho not in P5. Their fan bases have had a more enjoyable season regardless of conference affiliation.

reminds me of how Fla took Urban Meyer and OSU Jim Tressel

That's one expensive hire when you factor in the buyout for both coaches and the $3.5m salary. Florida just paid out to coaches in 2 weeks what Syracuse pays in 8(?) years.

That's insane...and remember can't pay players or else you have to cut other sports.

mcelwain leaving CSU might be the best thing that ever happened to them - they might make that trade (giant windfall for a guy with one good year)

Like you said, perfect opportunity for them to hire Stitt and see what happens. Imagine if they went to Florida and won because the Gators couldn't stop his offense...hi-larious

Eh... that doesnt make much sense.

There was nothing wrong with Michigan when they hired Rich Rod who hada significantly upgraded resume than McElwain.

So the going rate is now $3.5 mil/year for guys who were good coordinators on nationally prominent teams but haven't won anything as a head coach. Nice. So what does that mean SU can afford to buy? Not much.

Don't understand why CSU negotiated down the buyout. Makes no sense to me.
