Carrier Dome Renovation Will Bring Syracuse a Pro Sports Atmosphere on College Campus (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Last week’s announcement from the university administration unveiling the first official details concerning the “West Campus Project” of the overall “Campus Framework” initiative was certainly exciting, the scope of the plans brings so many possibilities of what $205M can do to turn an antiseptic concrete facility into a gem envied by the school’s peers. Partnering with experienced stadium renovation architects and designers who have previously transformed older buildings into stunning 21st century sports/entertainment showplaces, there’s no telling how creative the final project will end up. With a permanent roof ending one era and beginning another, combined with the technological advancements that will ensure a more pleasurable competitor and spectator experience, what’s not to like?

“Welcome to the big leagues,” we remember thinking. “Are we really just off the quad of the SU campus, in Syracuse, N.Y.?”

That was the feeling and question we asked ourselves shortly before kickoff in front of the largest crowd for any event in Carrier Dome history (50,564), on that loud, steamy evening of Saturday, Sept. 20, 1980 as Syracuse christened a new era of Orange sports with the Dome’s debut, the ’80 football season opening 36-24 victory against Miami of Ohio.

Oh, it was an electric evening alright, humid and sauna-like for sure with the bulging crowd, but no doubt electric, something that the populace of central New York had never before experienced on the former site of Archbold Stadium.

Taurean Thompson's Mom Doesn't Want 4-Star PF at Syracuse (spartanavenue.com; Muldowney)

Four-star power forward Taurean Thompson is reportedly down to three teams, including Michigan State, but his mother apparently doesn’t want Syracuse.

Yes, you’re reading the headline correctly. Just months after it was rumored Josh Jackson’s mother didn’t want him at Michigan State, Taurean Thompson’s mom is apparently not on board with the idea of him playing for Syracuse.

According to reports on Twitter, this rumor has a little more substance to it, coming from a respected Syracuse source.

This is a scary trend in recruiting these days as kids’ parents are having an overwhelming say in their college future. While parents should have some pull, either way, the recruit ultimately has to make the best decision for his future.

In this case, if Thompson wants to go to Syracuse 100 percent but his mom is against it, they need to find some sort of middle ground and agree on something. Maybe set some boundaries for his time at Syracuse.

How does this affect Michigan State?

Well, the Spartans are reportedly in the top three for Thompson and if his mom doesn’t want him to play for Jim Boeheim and Syracuse, the other two options are MSU and Seton Hall.

Syracuse Once Again at the Forefront of Education (timesunion.com; column; Norman Chad)

Syracuse University, perhaps the nation's premier institution of higher learning in terms of balancing academic excellence with athletic achievement, has announced it will offer the first U.S. bachelor's degree in sports analytics.

"Moneyball" is now a teachable moment, at the yearly cost of $43,318 in tuition and fees.

Beginning in August 2017, students at Syracuse will get a chance to acquire a "deep understanding of math, statistics, research methodology, sport economics, database management, finance and computer programming integral to sport analytics."

Boy, what a babe magnet that's going to be.

The program also includes a mandatory foreign language requirement, largely to prepare its students to better comprehend Mel Kiper Jr. in the months leading up to the annual NFL draft.

Data uber-wonk Nate Silver, a 2000 graduate of the University of Chicago, announced he was voiding his B.A. in economics and immediately enrolling at Syracuse "to earn the degree I was put on this Earth for."

The sports-analytics initiative indicates the forward thinking Syracuse often has demonstrated in regard to academics and athletics.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market for data analysts is growing at 27 percent; data analysts also score remarkably well at Match.com and eHarmony.

Carrier Dome Renovation: It's All About Improving the Fan Experience (PS; editorial)

Bring it. We're ready for an updated, upgraded Carrier Dome on the Syracuse University campus. The university unveiled its plans for a $255 million multi-prong project to replace the marshmallow-looking inflatable roof with a glass-appearing hard top and make the Dome and Archbold gymnasium more accessible, in compliance with theAmerican Disabilities Act. Meeting ADA legal obligations is one thing, but the real deal probably will be the improvements that deliver the wow factor to seduce student athletes and prospective students. A refreshed Dome will look good on nationally televised games, too.

Once again, the Syracuse skyline will change because the Dome's appearance distinguishes it from everything. The architectural renderings and references to Minneapolis' U.S. Bank Stadium give us a look into the future. Understandably, it's too late in the game to imagine a roof top in keeping with the surrounding architecture of the campus' early years. So SU will top the Dome with a futuristic looking roof. Our best hope is it's not too out-of-scale and jarring. The good news is it will allow light to flood the Dome.

The university expects to receive government support – our tax dollars -- for the Dome renovations. Since we're chipping in, we have a vested interest in some of the upgrades we might enjoy at a future SU game, high school marching band competition or concert. So here is our wish list to improve the Dome experience:

Air conditioning. Since more light will be directed into the stadium, air conditioning will be needed when the temps and tempers rise during games.

Bathrooms. It's a common complaint of women: there are never enough bathrooms in any public facility. A few family bathrooms would be ideal, especially for parents with children. Presently, the Dome has eight restrooms each for men and women and 25 stalls for women and five for men. Each of the restrooms includes changing tables.

I didn't think the odds were very good that Diagne would ever suit up in a D-1 uniform after the draft fiasco but it seems like he is finally getting some good advice now.
