Welcome to National Garlic Day!

This stinking rose is a member of the lily family. This family also includes onions, leeks and shallots. While garlic originated in Asia over 7,000 years ago, it is used in a variety of cuisines, but it is also used for medicinal purposes.

It is considered an herbal remedy for colds, and it has been suggested to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Modern science has proven garlic’s antibiotic properties.

NCAA announces three New York cities picked to host NCAA Tournament games (PS; Carlson)

Three cities in New York were picked to host games for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament between 2019 and 2022, according to an announcement by the NCAA on Tuesday.

The NCAA tabbed Albany, Buffalo and a pair of locations in New York City to host games during that time frame.

Albany's Times-Union Center was picked to host the first two rounds in 2020. Buffalo's KeyBank Center will host the first two rounds in 2022. The NCAA picked Madison Square Garden as a regional site in 2020 and the Barclay's Center for a regional in 2021.

The games in Albany will mark the third time that the NCAA Tournament has visited the city and the first since 2003, when the city served as a regional site as Syracuse won the national title.

Buffalo was also picked to host the Frozen Four in 2019, while Albany will host a regional for the women's tournament that year.

The other cities picked to host college hockey's national championship event were Detroit (2020), Pittsburgh (2021) and Boston (2022).

The NCAA also included a number of events in North Carolina, including first and second round games in Greensboro (2020) and the regional round in Raleigh (2021).

ACC and Member Institutions to Host Future NCAA Championships | News (theacc.com)

The NCAA announced today host sites for preliminary rounds and finals of its predetermined championships in Divisions I, II and III to be held from 2017-18 through 2021-22.

The ACC and the Greensboro Coliseum have been selected as hosts for the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Regional and the 2020 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First- and Second-Rounds.

"We're pleased to be hosting future rounds of the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships in partnership with the Greensboro Coliseum which is a terrific facility that provides excellent hospitality to participating teams, schools and fans," said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. "It's great not only to have NCAA Championships back in the state of North Carolina, but to have so many of our institutions and venues within our footprint awarded sites for future years."

The 2020 NCAA Men’s Basketball First- and Second-Rounds will mark the 14th time the Greensboro Coliseum has hosted NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament action. The 2019 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional will be the fifth NCAA women’s regional in Greensboro Coliseum history.

The women’s regional championships will be played on either Friday/Sunday or Saturday/Monday from March 29 through April 1, 2019. The men’s first- and second-rounds will be played Friday, March 20 and Sunday, March 22, 2020.

The ACC and the Coliseum previously hosted an NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional Championship in 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2015. The Coliseum has also served as a major venue for the sport at the conference tournament level, having hosted 17 of the last 18 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournaments.

The ACC and the Coliseum have hosted 13 previous NCAA Men’s Tournament postseason events, beginning with the 1974 Final Four, won by NC State following victories over UCLA, 80-77, (two overtimes) and Marquette, 76-64. The ACC and the Coliseum most recently hosted the second- and third-rounds in 2012.

Large asteroid passing near Earth today, will light up in night sky (PS; AP)

An asteroid discovered in May 2014 will safely fly past Earth on April 19, and if you have the right equipment you'll be able to see it for a couple of nights.

The asteroid is called 2014 JO25 and was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Arizona. It's quite large, measuring roughly 2,000 feet wide, but we don't know anything about its physical properties yet. That should change as it passes, though, with several radar observations planned using NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar in California as well as the National Science Foundation's Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

2014 JO25 will be viewable for a number of reasons, not least of which is its size and the relatively close distance of the pass, which is estimated to be 1.1 million miles from Earth (4.6x the distance to the moon). NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab expects the asteroid to brighten to magnitude 11 (its surface is twice as reflective as the moon) and therefore should be visible using small optical telescopes for a couple of nights if the skies are clear.

Anyone who manages to catch a glimpse of 2014 JO25 can safely say they experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity. The asteroid will not pass Earth again for at least another 500 years. As for the next large asteroid near Earth pass, that's expected to happen in 2027 when asteroid 1999 AN10 passes at a distance of 236,000 miles. It measures half a mile wide (2,640 feet).
