Welcome to National Lighthouse Day!

It was on this day in 1789, that Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouse, beacons, buoys and public piers. In Celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the Act and the commissioning of the first Federal lighthouse, Congress passed a resolution which designated August 7, 1989 as National Lighthouse Day.

Jersey point guard Jalen Carey lists KU as one of six finalists (kansascity.cmo; Bedore)

Jalen Carey, a 6-foot-4 senior point guard from Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, N.J., who is ranked No. 52 in the recruiting class of 2018 by , on Sunday listed Kansas as one of his six finalists.

Carey tweeted a list of KU, Villanova, Connecticut, Rutgers, Miami and Syracuse. His Twitter post included pictures of him wearing the jerseys of all six finalists.

“Carey is a highly talented young playmaking guard. He’s both smooth and athletic with an extra gear to his attacking game off the bounce. He’s good with the ball and a high level finisher at a young age who is bouncy, able to use both hands and even be crafty by jumping off both feet,” reads ESPN.com’s scouting report on Carey.

“He has a solid build, is capable of playing on or off the ball and has the tools to be a good defender down the road. The consistency of Carey’s jumper is the biggest question mark in his game right now. … Carey is a high level scoring guard with great attacking tools and the potential to be an equally impactful defender down the road but he’ll either need to evolve into more of a true point guard or become a more consistent shooting threat from off the ball,” added the ESPN.com scouting report.

Duke Basketball's Offseason Adventure - Armchair All-Americans (armchairallamericans.com; Donohue)

A recent development in the arms race of college sports has been the offseason trips that teams are allowed to take every four years to other countries. Michigan may be the highest profile of these with their trip to Rome last spring, but the Blue Devils are getting in on the action this August.

Duke will be traveling to the Dominican Republic for a pair of exhibition games against the Dominican National Team. The benefits of these trips are twofold.

First, it means that the team is allowed to start practicing earlier, which is a huge benefit for a young team like the Blue Devils. Duke will have to replace six of its top seven players from last year and giving the young players time to get used to playing together and get in a rhythm will be essential to success.

This will also help the group bond closer together and allow Grayson Allen, the lone senior, to learn how to assume more of a leadership role as the elder statesman on this team.

Second, traveling gives the team the opportunity to play against legitimate competition in meaningful games. As head coach Mike Krzyzewski says, “No matter how much you work out in practice, you don’t really know about a team until you see it in competition.” Seeing how the high profile freshman react to their first taste of college action will tell the legendary coach a lot about the team’s prospects for this season.

Another alligator on the loose in same Upstate NY river 1 week after first was caught (newyorkupstate.com; Axelson)

It's no crock! A second alligator has been sighted in the the same Southern Tier river near the same town as the first one. The sighting comes just over a week after the first reptile was captured.

The second alligator was sighted by yet another kayaker, Susan Leri, who shared the photo below with WBNG-TV.

Whitney Point Mayor Ryan Reynolds, who confirmed the existence of the first alligator in late July, also verified reports of the new animal, and reminded residents to use caution if they sight it.

The first alligator, which is now known as "Whitney," has found a home at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, after DEC workers captured it on July 29.

I have to admit that I don't know the names of the players in that Duke picture, but I can already tell you the next iconic hated Duke guy is right there in middle. Good lord. Do they have a factory that makes these prototype hated Duke guys? It is 2017 and the kid is rocking a "bad guy from Karate Kid" wave for gawd's sake!

Is that Alex O'Connell that we were recruiting?

Don't know, but if he came here I'm sure Devo would have pulled him aside for a man to man about that mop!
