Welcome to National Beer Lover's Day!
  1. Germany serves beer ice cream in popsicle form. Its alcoholic content is less than that found in “classic” beer.
  2. In 1962, Iron City beer was the brand used to test-market the concept of tab opening aluminum cans. By 1970, over 90% of all beer cans were self-opening.
  3. Prohibition, beginning on January 16, 1920, lasted 13 years, 10 months, 19 days, 17 hours, and 32-1/2 minutes, and was rescinded on December 5, 1933, at 3:32 p.m.
  4. Centuries ago in England, pub visitors used a novel innovation that enabled them to get their beer served quickly. They used mugs with a whistle baked into the rim, the whistle being used to summon the barmaid. It has been suggested this practice gave birth to the phrase “wet your whistle.”
  5. A beer lover or enthusiast is called a cerevisaphile.

What Syracuse Fans Should Know Ahead of the ACC Basketball Schedule Release – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Grossman)

Last year there were 5 ACC games played in the Dome on the weekend. All were Saturday games and Duke and Louisville were scheduled for weekday nights...

Football season may just be getting under way and the ACC may be set to be as good and competitive as ever but the conference does not want you to forget that it is a premier basketball conference as well. Several college basketball insiders, including CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, reported that the ACC will release its complete conference basketball schedule on Thursday. While the schedule is not yet out, we actually do already know quite a bit about it. It may not be breaking news, but it surely isn’t fake news so here is a breakdown of who Syracuse will play and where.

Home and Away

Every year, the Orange will play four teams twice and ten teams once (five home and five away). The Orange will again play Boston College and Pittsburgh both home and away as they are considered to be “rivalry games”. This could be considered good news or bad news. Neither team is projected to make noise in the ACC but we really don’t need to go down the road of how Syracuse has fared against Pitt since joining the ACC nor how the Orange played against BC last season on the road (or the fact that the BC was the team that ended Syracuse’s perfect start to the 2013-14 season). The Orange will also play Wake Forest and Virginia twice. The Orange and Demon Deacons have played some competitive games in recent years but that pales in comparison to the recent history between Syracuse and Virginia.

Just for fun: Syracuse vs. Virginia: Syracuse Moves on to Final Four

Away Only

Look away Orange fans. Read at your own risk. The Orange will have to travel to Cameron Indoor to play Duke, to the KFC Yum! Center to play Louisville and fly down to Coral Gables to play Miami. Syracuse will also trek to Georgia Tech and Florida State. It is important to remember that the Orange won their last game in Durham and are on a two game winning streak against the Blue Devils.

I know what every Syracuse fan wants to do right now. So, here is the John Gillon buzzer beater. And here is what he had to say to the Fizz about that moment. You’re welcome.

Syracuse Basketball: Signing With Golden State Saved Michael Gbinije’s Career (itlh.com; Weisleder)

It hasn’t been all rainbows and cream for former Syracuse basketball star Michael Gbinije in the NBA. But he finally got his big break, ITLH discusses

Former Syracuse basketball standout Michael Gbinije has signed with the Golden State Warriors according to RealGM’s Keith Smith. Not only could NBA championships be in his future, but perhaps the rejuvenation he needed for his basketball career.

The deal will most likely result in the 25-year-old joining Golden State’s preseason training team. However, Gbinije’ skills probably won’t allow him to make the opening night roster, rather the G-League squad in Santa Cruz.

With that in mind, Gbinije was one of the best players during his time with Detroit’s G-League affiliate last season, and a change of scenery may result in the 6-foot-7 versatile guard playing valuable minutes in the NBA down the road.

In 16 games with the Grand Rapids Drive, Gbinije averaged 12 points, over four rebounds, and nearly two assists.

Gbinije was a late second round selection by the Detroit Pistons in 2016. After being waived by them in July, many wondered whether or not he would have a chance at playing in the NBA ever again.

Much like reigning Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon, Gbinije spent far more years in college than the rest of the sophomores.

First there were rumors. Then came the reports. On Tuesday, Seton Hall made it official -- Taurean Thompson is a Pirate.

Seton Hall announced that Thompson has transferred to the South Orange, becoming eligible next season after sitting this year per NCAA requirements. The news comes days after reports that the New York native had enrolled at Seton Hall.

"Taurean is a terrific addition for the Seton Hall men's basketball program," coach Kevin Willard said in a statement. "He is long and athletic with good post skills and the ability to step out and shoot. We will work with him during his sit-out year to further his development both on the court and in the classroom and expect him to be ready to compete for Seton Hall next season."

Syracuse University alumni couple donates $5.25 million toward student scholarships (PS; McMahon)

Syracuse University is inching toward its academic fundraising goal of $40 million thanks to a contribution from a local alumni family.

Syracuse University trustee Dan Mezzalingua and his wife Kathy donated $5.25 million toward financial aid scholarships for undergraduate students, the university announced this week.

The Fayetteville couple's donation is part of SU's $100 million "Invest Syracuse" plan to increase funding to academics.

The Mezzalingua said in a news release he and his family donated the funds to support Chancellor Kent Syverud and his plan to improve the university.

The three-part plan includes a tuition hike announced in July that officials expect to yield an additional $30 million in revenue. The university also plans to reduce administrative spending by $30 million, and hopes to raise $40 million through gifts such as the Mezzalinguas'.

Scholarships like those funded by the Mezzalinguas are expected to offset the increasing cost of SU tuition for students in need.

Syverud described in July a kind of Robinhood approach to SU's tuition.

SU is asking students who can afford the $50,000-plus price tag to pay full-price, but looking to use increased revenue from the plan for scholarships for students and families who can't afford to pay that much.
