Welcome to Mulligan Day!

Mulligan Day is a day when people redo something that didn't turn out the first time. It is a day when people give themselves or others a second chance. Mulligan is a term used in golf when someone who shoots a bad shot is given a do-over. It is only used in informal games, and usually only one extra shot is given per 18 holes, although sometimes a mulligan is given every 9 holes. The term can be applied to other games such as darts as well. The word likely came from David Mulligan, a Canadian golfer prominent in the 1920's, who either hit a poor tee shot, was jumpy and shaky after a shot, or overslept and was late for a shot. Another theory is that John A. "Buddy" Mulligan, a locker room attendant from New Jersey, played golf with a sports writer who started using the term after Mulligan needed a redo after his first shot. The writer, Des Sullivan, used the term in his golf articles for the Newark Evening News. Regardless of which of these stories is true, the term has stuck, and this day is dedicated to it.

Is Frank Howard ready to run the point for Syracuse basketball? (Mike's Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse University men's basketball team began practicing two weeks ago, but Orange fans won't get a look at the squad until this Friday during the Orange-White scrimmage at the Carrier Dome.

But, judging by the emails, the Orange hasn't been out-of-sight, out-of-mind for its fans. Syracuse fans have questions about their team and we're here to answer them. Or at least try.

If you have questions about the Orange, the ACC, college basketball or any subject really, email them to Mike Waters at mwaters@syracuse.com.

Now, onto this week's questions!

Q: Is Frank Howard 100 percent physically and mentally ready to play point guard for coach (Jim) Boeheim? Is he running the team and acting as a "leader" during practices?

-John

Mike: As the question suggests, there are questions about Howard's physical and mental state as he enters his junior season.

Howard began the 2016-17 season as Syracuse's starting point. He wound up starting 14 games before losing the starting point guard job to fifth-year graduate transfer John Gillon.

In those 14 starts, we got a microcosm of Howard's season. He played great against middling competition, but he struggled with the opposition got tougher.

Big wins and payout accompany Syracuse’s move to the ACC (DO; Gutierrez)

Daryl Gross’ phone buzzed at the 2011 U.S. Open in Queens, New York. It was an Atlantic Coast Conference official, whom Gross declined to name, saying that Syracuse, then a member of the Big East, essentially could join the ACC within two years.

Ecstatic, Gross, then Syracuse’s director of athletics, immediately called Chancellor Nancy Cantor to set up a meeting. Within two weeks, in a conference room at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, the pair pitched the move to Syracuse University’s Board of Trustees. On that early September day, they presented a PowerPoint detailing their interest to move from the Big East to the ACC, a decision in need of only the board’s approval. The big pitch: increased exposure and revenue streams.

That came swiftly. On Sept. 18, 2011, the ACC announced Syracuse, plus Pittsburgh, would join the league. Once a cornerstone of the Big East, Syracuse rapidly negotiated an early departure and paid $7.5 million in exit fees. On July 1, 2013, Syracuse officially joined the ACC. The conference’s financial promise was clear in the sights of officials at SU, the second-largest employer in Onondaga County, behind only the State University of New York Upstate Medical University.

“The Big East had some major challenges,” Gross said last month. “And you snooze, you lose. We needed to move.”

Six years and one month after it announced the switch to the ACC, Syracuse has benefited from increased exposure, like most recently when the football team upset defending national champion Clemson on ESPN. This translates to conference payout revenue and benefits from the 2019 launch of the ACC Network, which will presumably garner even more conference media revenue.

ACC schools collected $20.2 million payout increases in 2015, about 3.6 times Big East schools, according to estimates by the NCAA, Forbes and John Vrooman, a Vanderbilt University sports economist.

State releases drawings of future for NYS Fair Orange Lot after $27 million in construction (PS; Lohmann)

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office has released renderings of what to expect with a $27 million project to expand and improve the Orange Lot at the New York State Fair.

Construction will begin this fill and is slated to end before next year's state fair on Aug. 22, 2018.

The changes will include:

  • Paving the lot, increase its parking capacity by 500 to 7,500, and adding a loop around the perimeter
  • New drainage to prevent flooding
  • A redesigned intersection from Exit 7 on I-690, with a new traffic signal
  • A new on-ramp from the west end of the lot onto I-690 westbound
Once finished, officials said there will be more than three miles of paved roads, two miles of sidewalks and 114 new LED lights.

The state will enter into an agreement with Onondaga County for shared use of the parking lots, according to a news release from the governor's office.

The changes are happening as part of a larger effort to make the fairgrounds and the nearby Onondaga Lakeview Amphitheater more of a year-round draw for tourists and locals.

The lot would lose as much as 30 percent of its capacity if it flooded, officials said, and traffic can sometimes back up onto the interstate during popular fair days and concerts.

The project is being paid for through a $500 million fund called the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, which aims to spur industry and create jobs.
