Halloween is an annual holiday, celebrated each year on October 31, that has roots in age-old European traditions. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints; soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween.

The Syracuse Basketball Squad Goes Trick-Or-Treating (itlh.com; Adler)

With that juicy “Orange” holiday known as Halloween nearly upon us, we decided to have some fun with the Syracuse basketball program.

The upcoming college-basketball campaign is just a few weeks away.

Thank, gosh.

Now, expectations for the 2017-18 SU hoops outfit are fairly muted, and with good reason. The roster is inexperienced and young. There are a lot of question marks. Yet, head coach Jim Boeheim and his staff possess in this current crew a ton of promise.

I can’t wait to get things going, and see how the Orange fares this season. Unsurprisingly, the ‘Cuse isn’t ranked at the onset, which actually makes me really happy. The pressure is less, and the bar is set pretty low for our boys.

Given that Halloween is right around the corner, I figured this would prove a delicious time to provide some trick-or-treating banter. A “trick” is a possible outcome that isn’t all too favorable. A “treat” is something for which we hope occurs.

ACC Roundup - Free Braxton Beverly (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

In ACC news, NC State’s Braxton Beverly, who wanted to get started early and took one summer class at Ohio State before Thad Matta was fired, has been told by the NCAA that his second appeal has failed and he’ll have to sit out his entire freshman year.

We weren’t the only ones to point out how ridiculous it is to allow UNC to have thousands of athletes take fake classes while this kid actually gets punished for going to class. It’s pathetic.

Meanwhile, former secretary of education Arne Duncan, himself a former college basketball player, says the system is broken and NCAA jefe Mark Emmert expresses concern that the NCAA isn’t being taken seriously and is widely distrusted.

You think?

Happy Halloween! Do you believe in ghosts? (poll) (PS; poll; Pucci)

Most everyone loves a good ghost story, but how many people really believe them? A recent HuffPost/YouGov poll of 1,000 adults showed that about 45 percent of adults believe that ghosts or spirits are real.

A separate study, conducted by Chapman University, showed that about 52 percent of those surveyed believed that places can be haunted.

Do you believe ghosts are real, or do these haunted theories vanish in thin air?
