Welcome to National Poinsettia Day!

Poinsettia Day celebrates the beautiful red flowering plant that has come to be associated with Christmas, the poinsettia. The plant is native to Mexico, where it was used by the Aztecs; its flowers were used to produce red dye, and its sap to treat fevers. Franciscan missionaries in Mexico used it in the 17th century as part of nativity processions, the first time it became associated with Christianity. A story has been passed down about a poor Mexican girl who didn't have anything to honor baby Jesus with at a procession. An angel told her any gift from the heart was a good gift, so she gathered weeds from the roadside. When she placed them around the manger they transformed into poinsettias. In Mexico the flowers are called La Flores de la Nochebuena, or the Flowers of the Holy Night, and are displayed on December 12, the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This day marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

3 positives, 3 concerns for Syracuse basketball - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Powell)

Despite an early December setback to Kansas, Syracuse has passed all the other tests on its early season schedule. The Orange are off to an 8-1 start heading into an old Big East rivalry battle with Georgetown Dec. 16 in Washington, D.C.. What have been the keys to Syracuse’s solid start, and what are some things the Orange need to improve upon before ACC play begins?

POSITIVES

Offensive Rebounding

Syracuse is one of just two ACC schools – Duke being the other – to average more than 15 offensive rebounds per game. Syracuse’s solid work on the offensive boards is one reason why the Orange rank second in the ACC, behind only Virginia, in rebounds allowed to opposing teams (30 per game). Syracuse’s dominance of the offensive glass helped the Orange win eight of their first nine games despite being the ACC’s worst 3-point shooting club in non-conference play.

ACC Roundup - Louisville Tops Bryant, Big Whoop (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Since there’s minimal action, we’re rolling ACC At A Glance into ACC Roundup today.

Tuesday’s only game sees BC fresh off the upset of Duke taking on 1-9 Columbia. Doesn’t seem like a particularly difficult challenge.

Louisville had no trouble with Bryant either Monday night, winning 102-59.

Anas Mahmoud continued his solid recent play with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. He also shot 8-10 from the floor.

Louisville will take some breathers before a December 29th trip to Rupp to play Kentucky.

In this week’s AP poll, Duke fell to #4 after losing to BC, Miami is #6, UNC #7, Virginia #16, Notre Dame #18 and FSU #19.

Upstate NY gets triple dose of snow and bitter cold: What you need to know (PS; Coin)

Snow will wind down this morning after a clipper system moved through Upstate New York overnight, but don't be fooled: There's more on the way.

A batch of intense snow squalls are likely to sweep across Upstate this morning, followed by heavy lake effect snow. (Some schools are on a delay.) Driving could be very difficult today and Wednesday as blowing snow and rapidly falling temperatures create whiteout conditions and icy roads.

By the time the worst is over Wednesday evening, many parts of Upstate could have a foot of new snow. That's on top of the lake effect snow that dumped up to 2 feet near lakes Erie and Ontario.

Oshae Brissett, Syracuse: Brissett wasn't eligible to be ranked in the 2017 class because he took a postgraduate year after his original high school class, but his 84 rating likely would've placed him at the back end of the ESPN 100. He's performing far better than that so far. Brissett is bouncy, can rebound and has some touch from the perimeter. He's averaging 13.6 points and 9.2 rebounds, with double-doubles in three of his past five games. Most impressively, Brissett has played all 40 minutes in three of his past four.
