Welcome to Barbershop Quartet Day!

On April 11, 1938 the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, marking the official celebration of Barbershop Quartet Day. The image of four wearing straw hats singing together with complex harmonies could be considered a cultural cornerstone of the 1940s.

However, Barbershop Quartet is by no means an American invention; the popularity of barbershops in England amongst men during the time of Shakespeare extended as far as in-house entertainment, often taking the form of a lutist providing a melody to which the queuing patrons could harmonize with. This idea and practice became popular in America in the West during the late 1800s, though a banjo was often used instead of a lute.

Did the 2018-19 ACC men’s basketball matchups get accidentally leaked? (streakingthelawn.com; Darney)

Fans of ACC basketball potentially got a little sneak peak at next season’s matchup matrix, thanks to a tweeting error by North Carolina. According to Syracuse.com, UNC accidentally posted the home and away matchups for next season, which college football reporter Matt Sarzyniak saw and wisely snapped a screenshot of.

For your viewing pleasure and analysis:

Looks like UNC inadvertently released next season's ACC MBK conference play opponent matrix, but removed the post from their new feed. Could be coming out this week though. Images from a Google cached version of the release. pic.twitter.com/0iwDlzxSMb

Virginia’s potential schedule is what you would call...not easy.

Home/Away: Louisville, Virginia Tech, Duke, Notre Dame

Home: Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest

Away: Boston College, Clemson, North Carolina, NC State, Syracuse

ACC Network looking more like a sinking ship than the rising tide (fansided.com; Helling)

This might be the dumbest story I have ever linked in Daily Links. The author claims to have graduated from Iowa. I doubt it.

The soon-to-launch ACC Network is already over budget, and the return on the investment might not improve the outlook much.
For collegiate conferences, the name of the money game in the current era is the revenue created by their own television networks. Salivating over the impressive advertising and rights returns posted by the Big Ten Network and SEC Network, the ACC Network is the rising tide that the ACC hopes will raise all of its ships.

So far, that’s not looking good.

According to Chris Coleman of Virginia Tech Sports War, the studio that ACC member Virginia Tech has pledged to build for the ACC Network is already over budget, by nearly double the original projected cost.

On top of the fact that the Hokies’ athletic department is already cash-strapped, having posted a net loss for the past two fiscal years, there is no guarantee that the revenue produced by the network will produce the returns necessary for the ACC to continue to compete with other conferences.

US Bowling Congress Open Championships returns to Syracuse, drawing 40,000 bowlers - Syracuse New Times (syracusenewtimes.com; Jaquays)

All eyes were on Patrick VanWagenen of Kingston, N.Y., as he took the honored approach as the first bowler — of some 40,000 from all over the world to follow him — to kick off the U.S. Bowling Congress 2018 Open Championships Tournament.

Chosen by a random lot that March 24 evening at downtown Syracuse’s Pirro Convention Center, Van- Wagenen was crowned “Joe Bowler” during this year’s opening ceremony. Wearing his crown and cape and holding his scepter, VanWagenen was escorted to his throne in front of the specially installed 48 alleys created for the four-month tournament.

He was given the prestigious duty of rolling the first ball on lane 28. VanWagenen said his only hopes were not to choke in front of the crowd of fellow bowlers and fans, including his wife Connie.

“I’m just focusing on not putting it in the ditch,” he told emcee and USBC deputy executive commissioner Jason Overstreet just before his approach. VanWagenen — a member of one of two Ed’s Budget Truck Rental teams, who carries around a 200 average at his home alley, Patel’s Kingston Lanes — threw an impressive attack at those pins, leaving only a pesky 10-pin standing.

VanWagenen bowled with the first squad at 7 p.m. that evening and returned the next morning at 7 a.m. for a second series. There, he bowled alongside USBC Hall of Famer Marshall Holman, illustrating just how close the amateurs can get to the pros in an open competition like this. Especially inspiring to VanWagenen was seeing that even the pros have a few “off” frames, he said.
