Welcome to International Men's Day!

International Men's Day is for celebrating men and the contributions they make to society. Talk of creating such a day dates back to the 1960s, but nothing initially came of it. In the early 1990s, groups in individual countries began working to establish an International Men's Day, hoping it would spread to other countries. Professor Thomas Oaster, director of the Missouri Center for Men's Studies at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, started an International Men's Day celebration in 1992, but it was discontinued after 1995. In 1999, the day began being held on its current date. First celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago, it was started by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, who chose the date in part because it was his father's birthday. The holiday gained great support in the Caribbean and spread to be celebrated internationally. Today it is held in over 70 countries.

Syracuse Basketball: Do the Orange still deserve to be ranked? (itlh.com; Patrick)

After two straight losses on Thursday and Friday, does the Syracuse basketball team still deserve to be considered among the best programs in the nation right now?

After two games and two wins, everything appeared to be heading in the right direction for the Syracuse basketball team this season.

But then it came time for the Orange to participate in the 2K Empire Classic inside Madison Square Garden last Thursday against the unranked UConn Huskies. Thanks to UConn shooting lights out from the outside (12-for-21), Syracuse ended up suffering their first loss of the 2018-19 season.

The result was nothing for the Orange to really freak out about. The Huskies had themselves and excellent shooting performance and that is not something Syracuse should be expecting from the majority of their opponents this season.

As a result of their loss, next on the Orange’s slate was a matchup with the No. 13 Oregon Ducks. Syracuse knew Oregon presented a tough matchup, but most assumed the Orange would be able to keep the game competitive and possibly come out with an impressive win.

Stock Up, Stock Down From Cuse in the City – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

If John Wildhack learned anything from this past weekend, it might be to never schedule a giant weekend in New York City ever again. Jokes aside, a peaking Syracuse athletics program took a sharp downward turn after a 1-3 showing in NYC. The only saving grace was Women’s basketball beating a ranked Texas A&M team to kick off the week. But in terms of men’s sports, it was a dud of a week. Only a handful of players stood out, while some others were far from impressive in the Big Apple.

Stock Up:

Jalen Carey

The freshman shined in his backyard for the Orange at The Garden. He got his first career starts and figures to stay in the lineup until Frank Howard is healthy. In the first game against UConn, Carey shook off some early turnover struggles and finished with the best night of his young career by pouring in 26 points. He followed that up with 14 points against Oregon while only coughing up the ball twice. Those performances were good enough to earn him all-tournament team honors. Jim Boeheim said Carey was the only reason the team had a chance against UConn, which is high praise for a freshman in just his third career game.

Andre Cisco

Cisco continued to show why he’s an All-American candidate as just a freshman. He picked up his sixth pick of the year, good for second in the entire country. He also added a pass breakup, but what may have been more impressive was his open-field tackling. Cisco chopped down ball carriers to turn potential 10-plus yard plays into just two or three. His nine tackles tied a season high and shows a glimpse that this secondary is no joke for the next couple years.

College Basketball Podcast: A conversation about Villanova, Syracuse -- and the great Maui field highlighted by Zion Williamson and Duke (cbssports.com; podcast; Parrish)

The Maui Jim Maui Invitational gets underway Monday here on this beautiful island in the middle of the Pacific. I previewed it already with the written word, if you wanna check that out. But we'd be remiss if we didn't also address it on the Eye On College Basketball Podcast. So we did. But, before we dove in, Matt Norlander and I opened on ... just Hawaii and this trip in general.

After that, the conversation went like this:

12:42: Villanova lost again Saturday. At home. To Furman. So now the reigning national champions are 2-2 with home losses to Furman and Michigan -- not to mention completely out of the Top 25 And 1 -- and the heralded recruiting class Jay Wright enrolled has had almost no impact. Did everybody underestimate what losing four NBA players does to a program not named Kentucky or Duke? Is it time to lower the ceiling on what Villanova can and will be this season? And how about this start from Furman? The Paladins are 5-0 with road wins over Loyola-Chicago and Villanova.

20:49: Syracuse, like Villanova, is also 2-2. The Orange lost to UConn and Oregon at Madison Square Garden. Is it possible bringing back the top five scorers from a team that only finished 41st at KenPom, even after advancing to the Sweet 16, doesn't actually make you great?

ACC Roundup - Wake Forest, Virginia Tech Win, Improve (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Both ACC teams in action Sunday won, with Wake Forest defeating Valparaiso 69-63 and Virginia Tech knocking off Purdue 89-83.

Wake Forest finally faced some adversity and handled it well, with the Deacs ripping off a nine point run late to build a lead on Valpo.

Jaylen Hoard, who is a 6-6 freshman, had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Wake Forest moves to a respectable 3-1.

Virginia Tech had its hands full with Purdue but Ahmed Hill heated up in the second half, where he scored 18, as the Hokies took down the Big Ten tough guys and won the Charleston Classic.

It’s a milestone win for Buzz Williams and his program as it’s the first tournament of any kind they’ve won.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker hit for 25 and was named MVP.

The schedule is favorable to the Hokies for a bit: between now and the start of ACC play they should be favored in at least nine of 11 games with Penn State and Washington possible (if unlikely) exceptions.

NY grocery store grades: Does your grocery deserve A, B or C for health violations? (PS; Breidenbach)

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has assigned health and safety letter grades to about 24,000 grocery stores so far this year.

The state started assigning grades to stores in January.

An "A" means no critical deficiencies were found. A "B" means some deficiencies were found, but were fixed during the inspection. That's considered "room for continuous improvement," according to inspectors.

A "C" means there is a need for immediate corrective action. Critical deficiencies were found, but not corrected during the inspection.

Stores are expected to post the letter grades at every public entrance.

The G league games have tens of people in the stands. It must be sad for someone to go from a packed dome to that.
