Welcome to Girl Scout Day!

Today we celebrate Girl Scouts, which was formed on today's date in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, who brought together 18 girls in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia. Low wanted girls to be prepared to face the world with courage, character, and confidence. She used the Girl Guides, founded in Great Britain in 1910, as her model. Her group soon became known as Girl Scouts of the United States of America, which it is still called today. Low's group focused on community service, inclusiveness, self-reliance, and the outdoors. Some of their activities included swimming, camping, basketball, hiking, and learning foreign languages.

During the 1920s, Girl Scouts expanded outside of the United States to China, Syria, and Mexico. Lone Troops on Foreign Soil began in 1925; it is now called USA Girl Scouts Overseas. During the Great Depression, Girl Scouts collected food and clothing for those in need, and During World War II, they organized Farm Aide projects, collected scrap fat and metal, grew victory gardens, and ran bicycle courier services. They responded to the Korean War in the 1950s by sending "Kits for Korea"—items that could be used by Korean citizens. On March 16, 1950, Girl Scouts of America was chartered by Congress.

It would have been one of the biggest shots in Big East history; his name would have been mentioned at this time every year.

Instead, it was a tick too late and a legendary shot was replaced by a legendary game.

“It was just time to get back to work, time to go back and play against a great UConn team,” Eric Devendorf told The Post this week. “Obviously we didn’t know it was going to six overtimes. I always tell people, the shot was just the setup to the greatest college game ever. I guess it worked out.”

Six overtimes, 70 minutes and 244 total points to be exact. Two Hall of Fame coaches at the helm of two blue-chip programs. All under the bright lights of the world’s greatest basketball stage.

Ten years ago Tuesday, one of the greatest games in college basketball history was played over a grueling, riveting 3 hours and 46 minutes at Madison Square Garden. In the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament, seventh-seeded Syracuse defeated favored UConn 127-117, needing nearly an extra game worth of overtime to pull off the upset.

“We were running out of gas, running out of players, and I was hoping the officials would run out of air in their whistles,” said then-UConn coach Jim Calhoun. “It was like playing a doubleheader. Using the old Ernie Banks line, it was, ‘Let’s play two.’ ”

The ACC and Big Ten were rejected. The Big East is going nowhere despite overtures from those power conferences.

It has reached a contract extension to continue to play its postseason tournament at the Garden for at least the next decade, as first reported by The Post Sunday morning. The extension is for two years, going through 2028, though there was an opt-out for both sides after 2022. According to a source, the Big East will pay significantly more in the new contract.

“We have renewed our vows,” Big East commissioner Val Ackerman said during a press conference during Sunday’s Holiday Festival at the Garden. “For the Big East, this building is home. It’s in our DNA. It’s who we are.”

The ACC and the Big Ten had been in contact with the Garden to potentially play their conference tournaments there, according to sources, putting pressure on the Big East to act. But now, they’ll either have to play them a week early, like the Big Ten did last year, or go somewhere else. The ACC has played its tournament at Barclays Center each of the last two years and is scheduled to return to Brooklyn in 2022.

Ex-Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins named Pac-12 Coach of the Year again (PS; Herbert)

Former Syracuse basketball assistant coach Mike Hopkins has been named Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

According to SBNation, the University of Washington men’s basketball team became the first team in conference history to sweep the Pac-12 honors on Monday. Hopkins won coach of the year for the second time in two years as the Huskies’ head coach, while players Jaylen Nowell and Matisee Thybulle were named Pac-12 player of the year and defensive player of the year, respectively.

Nowell was Washington’s leading scorer, averaging 16.3 points and 5.3 rebounds while hitting 42.7 percent of his three-point shots. The AP reports Thybulle won defensive honors for the second year in a row as he matched Jason Kidd’s single-season conference record with 110 steals and is currently six steals behind Gary Payton’s Pac-12 career record of 321.

Pac-12 honors are picked based on voting from the league’s 12 coaches.

ACC Expansion Teams: How Successful Have They Been? (DBR; King)

When Syracuse joined the ACC in 2013-14 and opened the season with 25 straight wins, including a dozen in conference action, it appeared Big East additions were about to take over the league. Notre Dame and Pitt climbed aboard that year too, and Louisville in 2015.

Instead of establishing their dominance, however, the newcomers’ fortunes went in a distinctly different direction, one sure to soothe ACC traditionalists.

That’s at least true on the men’s side, anyway.

None of the additions have finished atop the regular-season standings. Pending completion of this year’s event, only Notre Dame has won the ACC Tournament (2015) or reached the final (a second time in 2017). This season saw no coach still enthralled with New York and its basketball venues finishing better than sixth during the regular season.

In fact the 2019 bottom finishers were Pitt and Notre Dame. Six years in, both programs coached by estimable practitioners of the basketball arts are more or less rebuilding from the ground up, testament to the rigors of the ACC.

That’s not to say the expansion corps has done poorly.

Lines out the door as Golden Corral opens in Syracuse (PS; Pucci)

A line of hungry diners filled the winding queue and even spilled outside as they waited to enter the restaurant, which after nearly three years of talks, opened for business today.

This was not franchise owner Niral Patel’s first grand opening—he also owns Golden Corrals in Albany, Saratoga, Queensbury, Poughkeepsie and two in New Jersey—but he said this might be his biggest.

“I hope I don’t upset some other people, but this has been the most exciting opening of my life, for sure," Patel said.

Patel, who has been a Golden Corral franchisee for nearly 20 years, said he has received more requests for a Syracuse location than any other Upstate New York locale in recent years.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response from the community, which has been simply awesome.”

Golden Corral’s last Central New York location was on South Fourth Street in Fulton, but that restaurant closed in 2005. Patel said he’s interested in opening additional Golden Corrals in Upstate New York, specifically Buffalo, Watertown and New Hartford.

The new restaurant employs 165 people and is one of only two Golden Corrals in the country—the other is in Greensboro, North Carolina—with the national chain’s new design, which Patel said was designed to be a more comfortable, open setting, with a stone fireplace serving as the dining room’s centerpiece.

The line out the door, which formed as soon as the restaurant opened at 10 a.m. and continued through the lunchtime hours, moved quickly, yet appeared to stand still, as new diners arrived to take a spot in line. The chain said that the first customer had camped out in the parking lot since 11:30 p.m. Sunday to ensure his top spot in line.

I think the board should buy Marek a seasons pass to the Golden Trough.
