Welcome to National Poultry Day!

Today we celebrate poultry: domesticated birds that are raised for their meat and eggs, and sometimes also for their feathers. Besides referring to the bird itself, the name may also refer specifically to the meat of the bird. Birds such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese are considered to be poultry, while birds such as parrots and songbirds are not. Other birds considered poultry include quail, pheasants, and guineafowl. Birds that are hunted, known as game birds, are usually not included in the definition. The word "poultry" goes back to the Latin word pullus, which means "small animal."

The domestication of poultry began thousands of years ago, but it may not have originally been for food. For example, chickens may have first been kept for cockfighting, which was possibly the first spectator sport ever, starting in Persia around 6,000 years ago. Soon afterward, poultry began being domesticated for food. Poultry is now the second most eaten meat in the world. Approximately 30% of the world's meat production is poultry, while about 38% is pork. Poultry may be purchased fresh or frozen, cooked or raw, as a whole bird or in cuts, with or without the bone, and seasoned or plain. Most farmed birds are now raised in intensive commercial farming operations, as opposed to being extensively farmed. As time progressed, selective breeding practices took root, where birds were bred for certain attributes, such as being able to grow faster or lay more eggs.

5 things Baylor fans should know about Syracuse before the NCAA tournament, including its top offensive threat (dallasnews.com; Lopez)

Baylor earned a bid to the NCAA tournament as a No. 9 seed in the West Region on Sunday and learned it would face No. 8 seed Syracuse at 8:57 p.m. central time on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Here are five things to know about Syracuse:

1. They have the longest-tenured head coach

Jim Boeheim has been around the block a few times. Since 1976, Boeheim has been Syracuse's head coach and is now in his 43rd season with the team. In his career, he's coached in 1,431 games and has a 1,047-384 record. He's made the NCAA tournament 33 times, has advanced to the Final Four five times and has won one NCAA championship.

2. Tyus Battle is their top offensive weapon

Battle, a junior guard, has led the Orange in scoring this season averaging 17.2 points per game on 43 percent shooting and 32 percent from beyond the arc. However, like Baylor guard Makai Mason, he comes into Thursday's meeting a little banged up. Battle didn't play in Syracuse's last two games because of a bruised hip. Boeheim said after Syracuse's win over Pitt on Wednesday that he thought Battle was still "two or three days" from playing. With Syracuse meeting Baylor on Thursday, Battle should be good to go for the Orange.

3. Dirty play?

During Thursday's loss to Duke, senior guard Frank Howard scored a career-high 28 points on 11 of 20 shooting from the floor. However, that's not what was talked about after the game. Howard was involved in a play where he appeared to try and trip Duke's freshman star Zion Williamson after he scored off a dunk.

The ACC Made History In The Final AP Poll Today (thespun.com; Machlin)

It’s been a pretty good week for the Atlantic Coast Conference. On top of seeing Zion Williamson return to Duke and dominate in the ACC Tournament, the conference got some very favorable seeding in the NCAA Tournament. But three top seeds were not enough to top the history-making poll released today.

On Monday, the Associated Press released its final poll of the season and has three ACC squads occupying the top spots. Duke comes in at No. 1, Virginia comes in at No. 2 and UNC comes in at No. 3.

Per College GameDay, the ACC is now the first conference ever to have all three teams in the three top spots in the AP Poll. Duke, Virginia, and UNC were all awarded with No. 1 seeds in their respective regions in the NCAA Tournament.

Rounding out the top ten in the poll are (in order from 4 to 10) Gonzaga, Michigan State, Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas Tech and Florida State.

Williamson, Barrett Named USBWA First Team All-America (goduke.com)

The United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), has announced its 2019 men’s college basketball awards, with Duke freshmen Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett earning first-team All-America honors, and each being named a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Trophy Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award.

Williamson and Barrett are the first freshman duo in USBWA history to earn first-team recognition in the same season. They are also the first teammate duo to be named to the first team in the same season since Duke’s J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams in 2006.

Williamson, who was named ACC Player and Freshman of the Year, and the ACC Tournament MVP, is second in the conference and 17th in the nation in points per game with 22.1. He is third in the ACC in rebounding (8.8), while leading the ACC in steals (2.2) and ranked fifth in blocked shots (1.8). Shooting .693 from the field this season, Williamson is tied for the NCAA lead. The Spartanburg, S.C., native is the nation’s only player averaging 20 points and shooting .650 from the field.

Barrett leads the ACC and is 14th nationally in points per game (22.9). The Mississauga, Ontario native is 11th in the conference in rebounds per game (7.5), 10th in field goal percentage (.457), and seventh in assists per game (4.1). He holds both the ACC freshman and Duke freshman single-season scoring record with 779 points this season. Barrett was also named first-team All-ACC, to the ACC All-Freshman Team and to the ACC All-Tournament Team.

Williamson and Barrett join Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis and North Carolina’s Coby White as finalists for the Wayman Tisdale Award. The other two finalists for the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Trophy are Tennessee’s Grant Williams and Murray State’s Ja Morant.

Coach K Said What? Yeah, Zion Williamson Needs To Get Away From Duke Now (forbes.com; Moore)

He's dominating. He's charismatic. According to Syracuse basketball coaching icon Jim Boeheim, "He's a crazy different type of player." He’s also flashing signs of creating a March Madness resume for the ages.

Even so, I haven't changed my mind on this Zion Williamson thing. He's got no business playing for Duke these days.

That's especially true now.

In case you haven't been paying attention, Williamson is nothing more than a hired hand working overtime without pay for a Duke program trying to make at least $8.5 million for reaching the Final Four in search of a sixth national championship for Mike Krzyzewski.

Speaking of Coach K, was it just me, or did anybody else cringe when he said the outrageous to ESPN Saturday night in Charlotte after his Blue Devils won the ACC tournament over Florida State?

"For Zion to play this many minutes is spectacular."

Actually, it was nuts. Krzyzewski's reference was to his all-everything freshman missing just four seconds of Duke's 73-63 victory. Due to Williamson unleashing his power, agility and awesomeness wrapped around his 6-foot-7 frame of 285 pounds for much of the season, the Blue Devils (29-5) are the No. 1 seed overall for the start of this week's NCAA Tournament.
