Welcome to Chocolate Day!

Chocolate Day celebrates chocolate, the sweet treat that is made from the cocoa bean. The holiday takes place on what some accounts say is the anniversary of when chocolate was introduced in Europe, in 1550. There are various chocolate days throughout the year, and this one is also commonly known as World Chocolate Day, and sometimes as International Chocolate Day.

Chocolate comes from a bean called Theobroma cacao. The word "chocolate" itself comes from the Spanish, and it stems from the Aztec word xocolatl, which means "bitter water". The Aztecs pounded the cacao beans and drank them without adding any sugar, and they thought the beans came from the gods. Indeed, Theobroma means "food of the gods". Cocoa beans are about 50% "cocoa butter" and 50% "chocolate liquor". Hernando Cortés brought cocoa beans back to Spain, and a chocolate drink that included sugar became popular right away. This seems to contradict the accounts that say chocolate wasn't introduced in Europe until 1550. The word "chocolate" first appeared in print, in England, in 1604.

Orange Add Gamecocks — Jacksonville State, That Is — to Hoop Schedule (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

Sorry, folks, it's not those Gamecocks from the SEC: The Syracuse basketball team has announced its first-ever date with the Gamecocks from Jacksonville State at the Dome this December.

Schedule update: We will host Jacksonville State on Dec. 10.

— Syracuse Basketball (@Cuse_MBB) July 6, 2020
Jacksonville State was just 13-19 and lost in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. However, the Gamecocks were the OVC Tournament champions in 2017 and lost 78-63 as a No. 15 seed to Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Jacksonville State was a Division II team until 1995 and won the national championship in 1985.

Syracuse will host JSU for the first time on December 10, two days after a previously announced home date with Green Bay. SU is also scheduled to host UMBC on November 10 and take on LSU at Madison Square Garden next season.

Syracuse Basketball: Top things to know about new foe, Jacksonville State (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball, with Jacksonville State on board, has two new opponents to the program in 2020-21.

Syracuse basketball will host Jacksonville State on Thursday, Dec. 10, from the Carrier Dome in the inaugural meeting between these two groups. While the Gamecocks struggled a tad last season, don’t sleep on this crew.

For one, Ray Harper, the Jacksonville State head coach, has amassed more than 500 victories throughout his 20-term career. Previously, over 12 years at Kentucky Wesleyan and Oklahoma City University, Harper tallied four national titles and five national coach of the year honors, according to his bio on the Gamecocks athletics department’s Web site.

Per a cuse.com announcement, in 2019-20 Jacksonville State finished at 13-19 overall, including an 8-10 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Gamecocks fell to Eastern Illinois in the first round of their league’s post-season tournament.

Hired to lead Jacksonville State on April 6, 2016, Harper in the 2018-19 campaign guided the Gamecocks to a single-stanza record for conquests, as Jacksonville State went 24-9. The squad also compiled its best outcome ever in conference competition during that term, going 15-3.

In his four seasons roaming the sidelines for the Gamecocks, Harper is an impressive 80-56, according to cuse.com. He can flat-out coach, and the Orange better not take him – and his roster – lightly.

Jacksonville State, whose campus is located in Jacksonville, Ala., certainly didn’t load up on cupcakes in the team’s 2019-20 non-conference slate. The Gamecocks traveled to SMU, VCU, Purdue, George Mason and Tennessee.

How does Boeheim's Army deal with a 7-3 guy; who's No. 23 and what about that shirt? (PS; Ditota)

Isaac Haas is 7-foot-3 and weighs nearly 300 pounds.

None of that is lost on Donte Greene, the Boeheim’s Army “big man” charged with defending him at least part of the time today.

Boeheim’s Army faces Men of Mackey at 4 p.m. (ESPN) for the right to stay in the $1 million winner-take-all The Basketball Tournament. Haas, the former Purdue star, will be an interesting dilemma for a Boeheim’s Army team that will need to turn one of its two power forwards (Will Rayman is the other one) into a temporary center.

Former Syracuse star Demetris Nichols excited for TBT return - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

The last time we saw live basketball on television, Syracuse had just routed North Carolina in the ACC Tournament. Little did we know it back then, but that would be the last taste of Orange basketball until now.

Boeheim’s Army returns to action in The Tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m. on ESPN against Men of Mackey (Purdue alumni) as they begin their quest for the $1 million dollar prize.

With that in mind, I chatted with former Syracuse forward and Boeheim’s Army forward Demetris Nichols. Nichols, like all of us, has been in quarantine since March and offered his thoughts on getting the band back together, what Syracuse will do without Tyler Lydon and Chris McCullough, and what he thinks it will be like to play in front of an empty arena.

TJO senior columnist Jim Stechschulte then calls in and we switch topics to football recruiting, with Syracuse landing three-star class of 2021 California quarterback Justin Lamson. Lamson, the heir apparent to Tommy DeVito, is likely to draw a lot of comparisons to former SU quarterback Eric Dungey.

Boeheim's Army new guy Will Rayman: Scrappy, tough rebounder, Covid survivor (PS; Ditota)

When Will Rayman initially considered joining Boeheim’s Army in The Basketball Tournament, he wondered about playing time. It seemed to the recent Colgate graduate that most of the forward minutes would be allocated elsewhere.

So with Chris McCullough, Tyler Lydon and Donte Greene populating the roster, Rayman plotted a strategy: He would use the few minutes he was allotted each game to prove his basketball mettle. He would scrap for rebounds. He would defend. He would poke away a critical pass, maybe sink a 3-ball.

“If I could get like 10 minutes with everybody out there and help them win, I’m so in,” he said.

But then Lydon dropped out, citing a hip injury. McCullough soon followed after a friend from his old neighborhood was shot and killed. Suddenly, Boeheim’s Army would be leaning on Rayman for more than spot minutes. Suddenly, Will Rayman was a key piece of the Boeheim’s Army puzzle.

“I’m still ready,” he said during a phone conversation. “I can do what I did at Colgate at any level. That’s the kind of player I am. I can adjust to different situations pretty well. I’m ready to take on the challenge.”

What channel is Boeheim’s Army on? TV, time, stream info for TBT (PS; Waters)

After spending five days in quarantine at a hotel in Columbus, Ohio, Boeheim’s Army will finally take the court in this year’s The Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.
Boeheim’s Army, a team made up largely of former Syracuse players, will take on the Men of Mackey, which features Purdue alumni along with a few players from other schools.
The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on ESPN.

Chris Vosters and Seth Greenberg will call the game from a remote studio. Jen Hale is ESPN’s on-site sideline reporter.

The Men of Mackey defeated Heartfire in an opening-round game on Sunday. The Men of Mackey took advance of the tournament’s Elam Ending, erasing a 6-point deficit in the final four minutes to claim an 85-79 victory. The Elam Ending puts a target score after the first deadball situation under the 4-minute remaining mark. The Men of Mackey out-scored Heartfire 12-0 after the target score was set.

The ‘lighter’ side of Skaneateles: Noted chef opens new cafe (PS; Cazentre)

Don Agate has cooked in a lot of places. Several have been steakhouses.

His newest venture, the first he’s operated himself, is definitely not a steakhouse.
Good Eats & Sips, which Agate owns with his wife Marie-Hélène Gingras, has a menu based on grain, greens and noodle bowls, along with smoothies and bagels.

“We didn’t set out to make it healthy, specifically,” Agate said. ”But it’s definitely the lighter side of Skaneateles. And we pay attention to the food.”

Good Eats & Sips is at 18 W. Genesee St. in Skaneateles, in the narrow but deep storefront spot previously occupied by the White Birch Vineyards Tasting Room. It closed in March (though the winery remains open).

Gingras had worked at White Birch, and so she and Agate had a jump on the space when it became vacant. They started to set it up in March, just as the coronavirus pandemic hit. It opened June 17.

“Covid (the coronavirus) is a crazy time to start a business,” Agate said. “But here we are."

The menu is based primarily on various kinds of bowls. Some are vegeterian or vegan (like a version of a Buddha Bowl), and others contain proteins, such as salmon, shrimp, chicken, beef or eggs.
