Welcome to Election Day!

Election Day is a day set aside in the United States for the general election of federal public officials, which include the president, vice president, and members of Congress. It takes place on "the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November," which translates to the first Tuesday after November 1, which falls sometime between November 2 and November 8. The presidential election is held every four years, during years that are divisible by four. Elections for members of the US House of Representatives and US Senate are held every two years: all Representatives are up for election each election, as they serve two-year terms, while the elections of Senators are staggered, with only a third of them being up at a time for election to their six-year terms. The elections that take place halfway between a president's term are called midterm elections.

State and local elections, such as gubernatorial elections, are usually held on the same date as those for federal offices since doing so is convenient and saves money. But some states hold elections for governors and other officials on odd-numbered years, which are known as off-year elections. Election Day is a public holiday or civic holiday in some states, and some states require giving citizens the ability to take off work to vote without loss of pay. In most states, voters have the option to vote early or vote absentee by mail. These options have expanded in recent years, and some states vote primarily by mail.

Dior Johnson gets clean slate with new high school team: ‘Your past is your past’ (PS; $; Waters)

Josh Giles heard rumblings almost two weeks ago that one of the highest-rated basketball players in the Class of 2022 may transfer to his school in Southern California.

The rumor became a reality last week when Syracuse basketball commit Dior Johnson enrolled at Corona Centennial High School after spending roughly two months at national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy.

Syracuse Basketball: Other teams plan for fans in stands, but will Dome? (itlh; Adler)

It’s still not known whether fans will get to watch Syracuse basketball games in-person, while some other squads have revealed attendance plans.

The Syracuse basketball 2020-21 campaign will commence in a few weeks’ time, and there is no word for university officials about whether fans will get to watch home games inside the Carrier Dome.

Orange leaders will of course have to follow regulations from the state of New York, and to date no fans have been permitted at the Dome for Syracuse football contests in the fall term.

Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, it won’t surprise me one iota if ‘Cuse fans won’t get allowed to cheer on Syracuse basketball at the Dome at any point in the 2020-21 stanza, but a lot of things can rapidly change, so who really knows at this juncture.

Orange Watch: The amazing life of Syracuse basketball legend Dave Bing - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: In his upcoming autobiography, “Attacking the Rim,” to be released this month (with forwards featuring a ‘Michigan flavor’ from Jalen Rose and fellow SU alumni Mike Tirico), arguably the greatest player in Orange basketball history opens up over 15 chapters of a page- turning retrospective. From his upbringing in Washington, D.C., how he ended up playing at Syracuse, his teammate and roommate Jim Boeheim, going on to a Hall of Fame, 12-year tenure in the NBA, followed by a longtime hugely successful business career founding Bing Steel which transformed to Bing Group, and the compelling political trail to become the Democratic mayor (2009-2013) of Detroit.

It may be hard to believe with what has transpired to the Syracuse football program over the majority of the last 60 seasons, but thanks to Ben Schwartzwalder’s quarter century of success from 1949-1973 (and two, decade-long runs by Dick MacPherson and Paul Pasqualoni, respectively), Syracuse used to be known nationally as a “football school.”

Boeheim and the Dome, of course, have taken care of transforming Syracuse into a “basketball school.”

With that in mind, as we highlight some of the antidotes from the Syracuse chapter of the book, we lead off with the tease that as a highly sought-after high school all-star, Bing had two pretty impressive escorts showing him around campus on his official visit, and they weren’t members of the basketball team that had gone 2-22 the recently completed season.

Recruited by schools in the Northeast, ACC, Big Ten, and several from the HCBU group, Bing chose Syracuse because of the relationship he built with new head coach Fred Lewis. Lewis’ honesty in his recruiting approach going into a rebuilding project, and “tell it like it is” philosophy made a distinct impression.

Syracuse’s approach was a breath of fresh air to Bing in a recruitment process that had become tiresome. He liked the style of play Lewis mapped out; a fast-paced offense that would let him score. The program also had a new home court debuting at Manley Field House.

Syracuse basketball has strong depth this term, and hopefully it is utilized (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim often uses a relatively short rotation, but maybe 2020-21 will prove something different.

Syracuse basketball begins its 2020-21 campaign in just a few short weeks, and expectations from national pundits are fairly tempered. That holds true for much of the fan base, although a contingent of Orange fanatics, myself included, believe that the ‘Cuse is in store for a solid term.

By solid, I foresee Syracuse basketball as a fringe top-25 team, a top-six outfit in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a squad that will hear its name called on Selection Sunday next spring.

A young and inexperienced line-up from 2019-20, when the Orange went 18-14, will likely blossom into a roster filled with veteran leaders and promising newbies. And, unlike in some other recent stanzas, the ‘Cuse boasts the full allotment of 13 scholarship players.

Let’s get real. Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim, entering his 45th season at the helm on the Hill, typically utilizes a rotation of around seven to eight guys.

While the odds are that he will continue such a pattern in 2020-21, my hope is that Boeheim and his assistants will ease up on this trend and go deeper down the line on the bench in the upcoming campaign.

Without question, replacing former Orange star forward Elijah Hughes is nearly impossible. He led the ACC in scoring during 2019-20, rebounded and dished out assists well, and should get selected in the 2020 NBA Draft slated to occur later this month.

Syracuse basketball prospect Bryce Lindsay aims for 2022 top-25 ranking (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has shown interest in 2022 point guard Bryce Lindsay, whose recruiting is heating up.

Syracuse basketball recently started expressing interest in 2022 point guard Bryce Lindsay from Baltimore, who is seeing his recruitment grow to a national scale.

The 6-foot-3 Lindsay, a junior at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore, runs on the AAU circuit with Team Thrill, which is also located in Baltimore.

To date, per this article by Stockrisers.com founder Jake Weingarten as well as several recruiting Web sites, Lindsay holds scholarship offers from teams such as former Big East Conference rival Georgetown, fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech, VCU, George Mason, Howard and Bryant.

I expect his offer sheet to soar in the near future, as Lindsay’s stock appears on the rise. According to his interview with Weingarten, Lindsay has interest from, besides the Orange, stellar squads such as Arizona, Arizona State, Purdue, Maryland, Indiana, Florida and Marquette, as well as a pair of ACC units in Pittsburgh and Clemson.

For now, I’m not seeing Lindsay rated nationally within the 2022 cycle by the primary recruiting services, but that will likely change should he perform well in his junior campaign of high school.

Rutgers men's basketball to face Syracuse in Big Ten/ACC Challenge (dailytargum.com; McCoy)

The Rutgers men’s basketball team has announced its first scheduled game, a Dec. 8 matchup with Syracuse. This game is part of the 22nd annual Big Ten/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge, where the Scarlet Knights hold a 2-4 record in the series.

Both of their wins came away from Piscataway (in Miami in 2018 and in Clemson in 2014). The game is scheduled to be played at the Rutgers Athletic Center (RAC), which will mark the first home game for Rutgers in the Challenge since 2017, when it hosted Florida State. It lost, 78-73.

The Knights and the Orange used to face off every year from 1995 to 2013, when both teams were members of the Big East conference. Syracuse holds a 39-9 lead in the overall series, currently holding a 13-game winning streak against Rutgers.

In their most recent matchup, on Jan. 2, 2013, the Orange won 78-53. This was the last in-conference matchup between the two teams, as both left the Big East conference after the 2013 season ended.

What we know about Duke men's basketball's 2020-21 schedule so far (dukechronicle.com; Piazza)

Despite Duke men’s basketball keeping its schedule close to the vest all offseason, the first inkling of a 2020-2021 schedule is starting to come to fruition.

Despite the start of the season being less than a month away, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding the logistics of college basketball. The Chronicle has compiled numerous reports from the past weeks and analyzed recent news to create a sense of what the college basketball season currently looks like for the Blue Devils.

ACC matchups

It looks like Duke at least knows who it will be playing throughout its conference schedule, though the dates and times for matchups are still up in the air.

The Blue Devils will have home and away contests with North Carolina, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. They will host Clemson, Boston College, Syracuse and Virginia in Cameron Indoor Stadium and will face Miami, Florida State, N.C. State and Virginia Tech on the road.

Nonconference matchups

  • Nov. 25 - Gardner Webb
  • Nov. 28 - Coppin State

Champions Classic - Michigan State

  • Dec. 4 - Bellarmine
  • Dec. 6 - Elon
  • Dec. 8 - Illinois (ACC/Big Ten Challenge)
  • Dec. 12 - Charleston Southern
After much speculation over the offseason, the team officially announced it will co-host its own multi-team event: The Duke Classic Honoring Dr. Onye E. Akwari. The event will include Howard, Elon and Bellarmine, with the Blue Devils welcoming the latter two for games in Cameron Indoor Stadium in early December. Akwari, who passed away in 2019, was the first African-American surgeon at Duke.

Ranking college basketball's 10 most important freshmen for the 2020-21 season (cbssports.com; Cobb)

The advent of the new G League Pathway Program designed to give top basketball prospects a professional option directly out of high school had an impact on this year's freshman class. Top-10 prospects Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga chose to sign with the new program over playing college basketball. So did former UCLA signee Daishen Nix and longtime Michigan commit Isaiah Todd.

But even with a handful of big names from the 2020 recruiting class going an alternative route, there will still be plenty of elite freshmen talent in college basketball this season. But who are the 10 most important? Several five-star prospects from the 2019 chose non-traditional powers with coaches in need of a jolt. Others are poised to play showcase roles for teams replacing numerous key players.

Players like Scottie Barnes at Florida State and Gonzaga's Jalen Suggs are easy picks to be solid players this season. But both are at playing for coaches with secure legacies in programs that rely more on depth and continuity than the boom or bust economy of going all in on freshmen. So their omission from this list is not an indictment on their abilities or NBA potential. Rather, the players included here are those who could have an outsized impact on their programs -- and the sport as a whole -- in the season ahead.

Syracuse University puts lid on two off-campus coronavirus outbreaks (PS; $; Mulder)

Syracuse University says it has taken aggressive steps to contain two off-campus coronavirus clusters detected last week.

The school has tested more than 3,000 students in the last few days and investigated more than 150 people who may have been exposed to the virus at a fraternity party and a large gathering at the Orange Crate Brewing Co. on South Crouse Avenue. The two events resulted in a spike of at least 21 positive cases.

“Right now, we are cautiously optimistic that these clusters have been successfully contained, mitigating the potential for additional community spread,” Mike Haynie, an SU vice chancellor, said in a message today to students, faculty and staff.

While SU is seeing a decline in cases related to those two events, it is seeing a modest increase in student and employee cases that coincide with the steady spread of coronavirus in Onondaga County and Central New York, Haynie said.
