Welcome to International Bagpipe Day!

The International Bagpipe Organisation and the Bagpipe Society co-founded the celebration of International Bagpipe Day in 2012. They have helped to bring the bagpipe to new players since 1986. It is important to them that the history and playing of the bagpipes are not lost. Putting this day together was with the hope of bringing awareness of the over 130 different types of bagpipe throughout the world.

If you aren’t familiar with this ancient instrument, bagpipe is a term that means a wind instrument that uses enclosed reeds to produce sound. Air feeds the reeds with a constant flow of air from a reservoir in the form of a bag. In each area that it is found, the bagpipe may change in sound and shape. This is an ancient instrument and is claimed to be represented on a Hittite slab dated to 1000 BC!

Syracuse Bubble Watch: March 10th Games of Note and Desired Outcomes (SI; McAllister)

Here are the games that Syracuse fans should be focused on for Wednesday, March 10th.

Syracuse vs NC State (12:00 p.m., ACCN): If this game does not go the Orange's way, everything that comes after this does not matter. Syracuse needs to win this game. Period.

Miami vs Clemson (2:30 p.m., ACCN): Syracuse wants Clemson to win so the Tigers can move into the top 30 in NET and give the Orange another quad one victory.

Air Force vs UNLV (4:30 p.m.): This does not directly impact Syracuse, but the Orange should hope UNLV comes out of this one. UNLV is the better team has a better shot at knocking off bubble team Utah State in the second round of the Mountain West Tournament.

Butler vs Xavier (6:00 p.m., FS1): This is quite simple. Xavier is one of the last teams in by many bracketologists. This despite the fact that Syracuse's resume is actually better in several key metrics. That said, a loss by the Musketeers here against a Butler team with a losing record and Xavier's bubble would pop.

Duke vs Louisville (6:30 p.m., ACCN): This is a rare game where there is a positive for Syracuse regardless of the outcome. If Louisville wins, it prevents Duke from gaining some momentum and getting back into the bubble mix. If Duke wins, it could potentially knock Louisville out of the NCAA Tournament.

A look at Syracuse’s future at the center position (DO; Dabbundo)

Bourama Sidibe’s meniscus injury four minutes into the Orange’s season turned the phrase “not ready” into arguably the two most important words of the Syracuse 2020-21 campaign.

Marek Dolezaj was supposed to be the temporary stopgap, but he became much more than that when Sidibe’s knee issues persisted through the entire regular season. As the undersized Dolezaj struggled against bigger Atlantic Coast Conference forwards, Jim Boeheim continued to acknowledge, again and again, that his trio of backup centers was “not ready” to play significant minutes and that he was looking for “anything” from his backups. He wanted to see them improve in practice before playing them in games.

After the first game when SU narrowly escaped Bryant, Boeheim said, “If they don’t play the whole year, it’s because I don’t think they can help us.” The Orange have seen brief appearances from John Bol Ajak, Frank Anselem and Jesse Edwards off the bench, but there’s no bigger positional question mark in 2021-22 and beyond than the center position — a spot that’s been a perennial uncertainty for nearly half a decade.

Syracuse (15-8, 9-7 ACC) enters its second-round ACC Tournament matchup with NC State on the bubble, with a chance to make the NCAA Tournament with one or two wins in Greensboro. But if the Orange hadn’t lost Sidibe, or were more equipped to handle his departure, they may never have been on the bubble in the first place.

Beat writers split if SU can beat NC State in 2nd round of ACC Tournament (DO; Staff)

Syracuse opens the ACC Tournament on Wednesday with a second-round game against NC State, a team it beat twice during the regular season. Wins against Clemson and North Carolina last week put the Orange one step closer to lifting their season back off the bubble and into an NCAA Tournament berth, but a win or two in the conference tournament is still necessary for that to happen.

Here’s what The Daily Orange’s three beat writers think will happen on Wednesday in Greensboro, North Carolina:

Andrew Crane (14-9)
Pack for more
Syracuse 77, NC State 72

After needing a last-second shot to bounce off the rim, the Orange pulled away in the second half on Jan. 31 to beat NC State for the first time this year and start another three-game winning streak. Wins like those have placed SU’s season back on the bubble, pending what happens during the five days in Greensboro.

The Wolfpack are on a roll, but I think Syracuse has figured out a formula to consistently beat them. The Orange plugged the middle of the 2-3 zone and, even though that opened up opportunities in the corner, they found a way to prevent DJ Funderburk and Manny Bates from capitalizing on a matchup with Marek Dolezaj inside. It’s tough to beat a team three times in the same season, but I think in this scenario, the Orange could pull that off. Look for Buddy Boeheim’s recent shooting surge to continue during the tournament, and for Quincy Guerrier to near 18-points, a number he’s passed just once since Jan. 23.

Anthony Dabbundo (18-5)
Third time isn’t the charm
NC State 75, Syracuse 71

The results around the country are making it more and more likely that a win on Wednesday alone would be enough to propel the Orange into an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse has beaten NC State twice already this season. And contrary to popular belief, teams going for their third consecutive win against the same team in the same season win at a 71% clip.

Despite all of that, I’m taking the Wolfpack in this game.

Syracuse had a 3-point shooting edge over the Wolfpack in both of those wins, and a really significant one in the first meeting. But NC State is a much better 3-point shooting team than the Orange for the season, and if the teams had shot to their percentages in both of those meetings, the Orange would have lost one and maybe both games.

Opponent preview: What to know about NC State before ACC Tournament opener (DO; Dabbundo)

Syracuse’s postseason has arrived, and the Orange’s NCAA Tournament fate will be decided by their performance in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

The Orange have a bye in the first round, when the league’s bottom-six teams will play on Tuesday. Syracuse (15-8, 9-7 ACC) opens the ACC Tournament in the second round against North Carolina State (13-9, 9-8) on Wednesday at 12 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The bracketology consensus is that Syracuse needs to win against NC State to have a chance to get an at-large bid.

Here’s what to know about the Wolfpack before the Orange play them for the third time this season.

All-time series
Syracuse leads 9-6

Last time they played
Syracuse traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina on Feb. 9 and beat NC State 77-68. It was the second meeting between the two teams after the Orange came back from a double-digit deficit in the first meeting two weeks prior. Syracuse won the second meeting because of its hot shooting night from beyond the arc and ability to turn over the Wolfpack’s offense. Alan Griffin led the Orange with 22 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3, and Syracuse made 9-of-19 from long range. SU forced 20 turnovers and pulled away late because Griffin, Kadary Richmond and Quincy Guerrier all registered multiple steals.

The Orange won both the rebounding and 3-point-shooting battle even though they’re worse than the Wolfpack in both of those metrics on the year.

KenPom odds

Syracuse has a 55% chance to win, with a projected score of 74-73.

Roundtable: Drafting the best players ahead of the ACC Tournament (DO; Staff)

Our men’s basketball beat writers have watched all but one Atlantic Coast Conference team play against Syracuse. We asked them to draft a five-player team, plus a sixth man and head coach, with the conference’s biggest difference-makers from the 2020-21 regular season.

The goal was to build the most complete team to take the court, not just the five best players. Fit, size, shooting and team building, as well as coaching, are all to be considered when selecting players.

The draft was a snake draft, and a list randomizer awarded Andrew Crane the first pick. Danny Emerman will have the second pick, followed by Anthony Dabbundo. Dabbundo began round two. Here’s what they picked:

Round 1:

Andrew Crane: Moses Wright, forward, Georgia Tech

It’s easy to justify picking Wright first overall after watching his 31-point, 16-rebound performance against Syracuse two weeks ago en route to winning ACC Player of the Year on Monday. Wright is the perfect foundational piece for a strong, physical team that’ll wear opponents down and eventually take over by shooting from the perimeter. He hasn’t shot worse than 56% from the field since Feb. 10, and his top-125 offensive rebounding percentage will help stabilize a consistent presence on the boards.

Roundtable: Evaluating Syracuse’s regular season, and what lies ahead (DO; Staff)

Syracuse closed out the regular season with two big wins against North Carolina and Clemson, both NCAA Tournament teams. The No. 8 seeded Orange now face No. 9 seed NC State in Greensboro, North Carolina on Wednesday at 12 p.m.

A loss would likely end the Orange’s season and bury their March Madness hopes; a win means they’d face No. 1 seed Virginia, who beat SU in a 23-point thrashing in late January. After a roundtable draft on Monday where our beat writers selected the Atlantic Coast Conference’s biggest difference-makers from the 2020-21 regular season, we asked them to evaluate Syracuse’s season thus far and look forward to the future.

Here’s how they answered some of SU men’s basketball’s most pressing questions:

A potential scenario for the Orange is a win over NC State in the second round and a loss to No. 1 seed Virginia in the quarterfinal. In that scenario, do you think Syracuse makes the tournament? Does Syracuse deserve a spot in the tournament?

Andrew Crane:
In Joe Lunardi’s March 9 seed list, Syracuse was No. 71 — meaning the Orange are among the “First Four Out.” A win over Virginia in the quarterfinals would essentially lock up a bid, but there are definitely scenarios where the Orange make the tournament even without that second win in Greensboro. And although that might be the case, I don’t think SU really deserves a spot without a win against the Cavaliers on Thursday.

SU’s only potential Quadrant 1 win from the regular season has fluctuated between Q-1 and Q-2 because of NC State’s teetering in and out of the top 75. Blowout losses to teams such as Duke and the pair of losses to Pittsburgh were flat-out awful, and disaster was brewing in a 20-point deficit to Notre Dame before the Orange somehow erased that. But in classic Syraucse fashion, it can essentially control its NCAA Tournament destiny in Greensboro and lift a once-sinking season off the bubble even when, at times, that seemed impossible.

Syracuse Basketball: Quincy Guerrier details Orange’s mindset, focus (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball sophomore forward Quincy Guerrier says that a week off from games has proven a positive as the Orange prepares to face N.C. State on Wednesday in the ACC Tournament’s second round from Greensboro, N.C.

Guerrier, fresh off being named to the All-ACC third team, spoke with media members via Zoom on Tuesday afternoon. He said that ‘Cuse players are feeling confident as they attempt to beat the Wolfpack for the third time during the 2020-21 campaign.

N.C. State (13-9, 9-8), the No. 9 seed in the ACC Tournament, has won five in a row, while the No. 8 seed Orange (15-8, 9-7) beat quality league foes North Carolina and Clemson at home last week to boost its Big Dance resume.

But in besting the Tar Heels and the Tigers, several ‘Cuse players, including Guerrier, freshman combo guard Kadary Richmond and senior power forward/center Marek Dolezaj, were banged up a bit with various injuries.

Syracuse basketball last suited up in an official contest this past Wednesday, so when it takes the floor versus the Wolfpack, a week will have gone by. Guerrier doesn’t think that this time off will negatively affect the Orange’s momentum.

How Difficult is a Three-Game Sweep for Syracuse? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

Syracuse Men’s Basketball has a unique challenge on its hands when it comes to the Second Round of the ACC Tournament. The Orange are pitted against the Wolfpack of NC State, which makes it the third time these teams have met this season. First, Syracuse took down NC State 76-73 at home on January 31, then nine days later the Orange bested the Wolfpack again, that time in Raleigh.

Now, it’s not crazy to see two teams go head to head three times in a season. With the way the ACC sets up its conference schedule, SU usually plays most conference opponents twice in the regular season, only with a couple of exceptions. So, depending on the seeding in the ACC and NCAA tournaments, you could see a team for a third time. This year, it just so happens to be NC State who Syracuse can’t get away from.

There is a common saying in the college basketball world– “beat a team three times is almost impossible.” While the sentiment may be true and the law of averages says that makes sense, that saying is actually not correct in actuality. Let’s take a look at the numbers, with a special thank you to Jordan Sperber of Hoop Vision for supplying them.

Here are a few 2020-21 ACC Men's Basketball Regular Season Factoids...

Pandemic Schedule.

The ACC played 206 of 251 scheduled men’s basketball games (82.1%) in the regular season. Not bad. Here's a table from Duke Basketball Report's "What The Pandemic Did To The ACC Basketball Schedule":

10 Things That Are More Blue Blood Than Syracuse - The Georgetown Voice (georgetownvoice.com; Peregrino)

Editor note: More evidence Georgetown fans are not smart or funny.

In recent weeks, the concept of what makes a blue blood college basketball program has been bandied about both among sports fans across the country and in the Voice Sports GroupMe. However, there is no clear definition of what a blue blood program really is. What does it take to be considered one? A title? Five? Sustained success? Recent achievements? Blue on the uniform?? In general blue blood programs are deemed to be noble and successful, but no one can seem to agree upon who exactly the blue bloods are. But here at the Voice, we know one thing: Syracuse, who some have placed in consideration of blue blood status, is definitely not one of them. Here is an incomplete list of things that are more of a blue blood than ‘Cuse.

Francisco Lindor’s blue hair in Spring Training

I’m a big fan of athletes dying their hair zany colors. From anything Dennis Rodman ever did, to Megan Rapinoe’s pink, to the Puerto Rican baseball team’s platinum blonde, I am in. Lindor’s blue hair, which debuted at Spring Training two years ago, is a masterstroke, featuring one of the best dye jobs I have seen. You have to admire the commitment this took. If only Syracuse was as committed to the Big East instead of running their football team out to go 1-9 in the ACC.

Sporty Smurf

I mean, Sporty Smurf literally has blue blood. While that makes this an easy call, I also know for a fact Sporty is a beast in any game he plays, as he is the star player for the Smurf soccer, football and basketball teams. I’m sure Gargamel would like to Monstar him if he could. I get Bo Jackson vibes coming off Sporty, as someone who can be an All-Star in any sport he chooses. Buddy Boeheim could never.

Melanie C in a blue tracksuit

I don’t pretend to know much about the Spice Girls, but watching a quick highlight reel of Sporty Spice tells me that Melanie C could succeed in any athletic situation for which she applies herself. Plus, Sporty Spice frequently wore blue while on tour with her band. This, plus being a part of the squad with 90 million albums sold, puts her above Carmelo Anthony, with zero albums sold or NBA championships, in my mind.

The SU alum behind the old Carrier Dome roof sales (DO; Riviera)

When Brandon Steiner lived with an SU football player as a freshman during the 1977-78 school year, he became infatuated with this roommate’s team-issued gear. He enjoyed wearing it, too, often sharing with his roommate.

His interest sparked a business idea. Steiner realized people were interested in exclusive gear that wasn’t as accessible. He was friends with many players on the football team, so he sold some of their gear to students. Steiner saw there was a bigger opportunity to sell memorabilia, something that wasn’t common at the time. Steiner founded his memorabilia company CollectibleXchange in the 1990s.

“I wanted to do something that was different and unique,” Steiner said. “When I had the opportunity … I really wanted to get going.”

In his senior year, Steiner attended the first football game in the Carrier Dome in 1980, and his class was the first to graduate in the stadium, too. The Dome is where his favorite moments in life happened, he said.

From my 2020-21 ACC Factoids (above):
BallHog.PNG

Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim averaged 14.7 shot attempts per game (2nd in the ACC), including 7.5 3-pointers (tied for first) - hitting 34.9% of the threes and 40.5% of his shots overall. Buddy did all this while dishing out only 54 assists (2.7 per game) and losing 1.5 turnovers per game.

To put it into perspective, Buddy Boeheim attempted 223 of Syracuse' 976 total shots, or 22.8%. Those aren't quite Russell Westbrook numbers, but they are good enough to earn Buddy my honorary Ball Hog of the Year award.
