Welcome to National Meatball Day!

Meatballs are probably a gift from the heavens—there are early recipes for meatballs are found in ancient Chinese, Arabic and Roman texts—and every culture seems to have their own version! Beef, pork, and veal are most popular, but they can be made with chicken, fish or even vegan. Let’s all rejoice on March 9 in honor of National Meatball Day.

Beat writers split on if Syracuse can defeat Florida State in ACC Tournament (DO; Staff)

After finishing as the No. 9 seed for this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, Syracuse opens against No. 8 Florida State on Wednesday at noon. The teams split their two meetings during the regular season by a combined eight points, with the Orange winning the first on Dec. 4 and the Seminoles taking the second on Jan. 15.

Caleb Mills leads FSU in scoring with 13.0 points per game, and the Seminoles’ Matthew Cleveland won the ACC’s Sixth Man of the Year with an 11.4 points per game average across his 26.1 minutes per game. They’ve won three games in a row entering the tournament, while Syracuse has lost four in a row — against Notre Dame, Duke, North Carolina and Miami — after it won six of seven before that stretch.

Here’s what The Daily Orange’s beat writers think will happen at the Barclays Center:

Andrew Crane (23-8)
One and done
Florida State 73, Syracuse 70

It’s difficult to pick against Syracuse in March, given the magic of the 2-3 zone and the offensive performances — like Buddy Boeheim’s run his junior year — that’ve defined years past. But if there was ever a year to do so, this would be the one. Based on the shots attempted by both teams, SU only wins its two meetings against Florida State 23% and 50% of the time, according to the ShotQuality numbers, despite the fact that the Orange won the former and came within a missed Jimmy Boeheim hookshot of potentially winning the latter.

Both teams have been derailed by injuries, and I think Syracuse has a somewhat decent chance of advancing to the quarterfinals if Symir Torrence returns. Still, Florida State has started to get healthy and string together strong games at the right time of the season, while the Orange’s season has been in free fall since they couldn’t pull out a close victory against Notre Dame. And that free fall will continue, until it ultimately ends at the final buzzer, on Wednesday.

Roshan Fernandez (19-12)

Not the end… yet
Syracuse 80, Florida State 77

Florida State ranks 319th in 3-point defense, according to KenPom, and that’s enough for me to pick the Orange. SU beat FSU in both teams’ ACC opener back in early December, but the Orange dropped the second contest when the Seminoles converted 12 3-pointers. I think Syracuse is capable of outpacing the Florida State offense, and behind a couple offensive rebounds, it should be able to produce enough points to do so. Buddy managed just six points in the first contest, but he had 18 in the second.

The Miami loss was just the latest example of a crushing defeat where Syracuse should’ve won. I don’t think SU will duplicate that against Florida State. They’ll do enough to keep the season rolling for one more game, with the inevitable contest with top-seeded Duke looming in the quarterfinals.

Opponent preview: What to know about FSU before SU's ACC Tournament matchup (DO; Crane)

Syracuse sits in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2016-17 season unless it claims the Atlantic Coast Conference’s automatic bid, a quest the Orange begin on Wednesday as the No. 9 seed against No. 8-seeded Florida State. The winner advances to the quarterfinals against top-seeded Duke the next day.

During the regular season, the Orange and the Seminoles split their pair of matchups, but the two teams enter the postseason on different trajectories — with SU dropping its last four games, while Florida State won its last three. Syracuse blew an 18-point lead in the second half of its most recent game against Miami, surrendering a 10-0 run across the last 70 seconds to spoil Buddy Boeheim’s 30 points on Senior Day and clinching SU’s first regular season under .500 with Jim Boeheim as head coach.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Seminoles (17-13, 10-10 ACC) before they face the Orange (15-16, 9-11 ACC) at the Barclays Center.

All-time series

Syracuse leads, 8-6.

Last time they played

Caleb Mills hit five 3-pointers, and Florida State connected on 12 as a team, as the Seminoles erased a double-digit deficit in the first half to eventually edge Syracuse, 76-71 in mid-January. They shot 55% from the field and 60% from 3, a stark contrast to the first meeting between the teams back in December when FSU only made 4-of-30 shots from beyond the arc. Buddy led Syrause with 18 points, and Cole Swider added 17 while making four 3s after he’d converted just two in SU’s previous two games combined.

But the Orange still had a chance to escape the Carrier Dome and prevent their fourth loss in their last five games. Trailing by one in the final seconds of the game, Syracuse had a chance to take the lead and drew up a final attempt for Jimmy Boeheim during its timeout. His hookshot — which Swider said “he makes 90% of the time” after the game — bounced off, though, and the Seminoles extended their lead to two possessions after free throws and a costly turnover by Joe Girard III on an inbounds pass.

Symir Torrence's emergence as a role player means his waiting is over (DO; Crane)

Jake Presutti’s office had served as a quasi-film room for Symir Torrence throughout last season. The two sat in opposite corners — Marquette’s assistant coach in one, its reserve guard in the other — as Presutti pulled up clips of Torrence’s minutes onto a television. The minutes were limited at times, but they had a sample to work with.

Meetings like these became regular occurrences as Torrence was assigned to Presutti’s “player group” at the start of the season. They broke down Torrence’s offensive spacing and his ball-screen coverage on defense. Torrence didn’t always try to have an answer or anticipate what Presutti would say when pointing out the lapses, and “that was a breath of fresh air” for Presutti.

But by mid-March, the topic of those conversations shifted. Marquette had stumbled to a 13-14 record. Torrence started the first three games, but he came off the bench for the final 21. Steve Wojciechowski, the coach that recruited Torrence to the school, had been fired. Presutti was still on the staff as Marquette transitioned to the Shaka Smart tenure, and he listened as Torrence decided on his potential plans for the following season — staying at Marquette, entering the transfer portal or, eventually, returning back to his hometown of Syracuse.

Waiting, or biding time, had been a constant throughout Torrence’s basketball trajectory. He served as the City Rocks AAU team’s sixth man for two years before sliding into its starting lineup three games into his 17U season. He became Alex Popp’s starting point guard at Vermont Academy after a year of waiting for the incumbent players to graduate. At Marquette, he hadn’t been able to crawl ahead on the depth chart after Markus Howard graduated, and Syracuse served as an opportunity for another chance to potentially become a starter at the collegiate level.

Why Syracuse has struggled against the press this season (DO; Fernandez)

Syracuse watched a seven-point lead evaporate in the final minute as it caved against Miami’s press on Saturday. Three straight possessions resulted in turnovers, and the Hurricanes came back to win in the Carrier Dome.

It’s not the first time this year SU’s had this problem, either. It had 19 turnovers against Miami’s pressure and blew a 14-point halftime lead during the first matchup in January. It couldn’t inbound the ball against Wake Forest’s pressure to close out a win and eventually lost in overtime. It had trouble getting the ball up the floor when Joe Girard III had six turnovers against Pittsburgh on Jan. 25. And it couldn’t inbound once-more against UNC with a one-point lead and 15 seconds to go, losing in overtime as well.

“We lost the game because we couldn’t get the ball up the court,” head coach Jim Boeheim said after Saturday’s game. “That’s embarrassing. It shouldn’t happen, but we are not good against pressure, basically.”

The Miami loss was probably Syracuse’s worst game against the press, but it’s been a recurring issue — particularly at the end of games — for the Orange this season. Boeheim said Syracuse is “not good against full-court pressure.” It’s not something that many teams do, Boeheim said, but it’s repeatedly succeeded against SU.

College men’s basketball: Syracuse regroups, seeks winning streak in ACC Tournament (nny360.com; St Croix)

The Syracuse University men’s basketball team needs the fresh slate that accompanies the postseason coming off a soul-crushing loss that encapsulated a frustrating campaign.

The ninth-seeded Orange (15-16) will face the eighth-seeded Florida State Seminoles (17-13) to begin play in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at noon Wednesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Syracuse is 1 ½-point consensus underdog for the second-round matchup to be televised on ESPN.

The winner will advance to face top-seeded and seventh-ranked Duke (26-5) in the ACC quarterfinals at noon Thursday in the same location.

Syracuse needs at least two wins in the tourney to avoid the first losing season in the 46-year tenure of Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim.

“We’re a good team, we’re going to go down there with confidence and go out swinging, we have nothing to lose at this point,” senior guard Buddy Boeheim said after SU lost to Miami, 75-72, to close the regular season last Saturday.

“This one is going to hurt for a while, but you’ve got to flip the switch obviously and get ready for (the tournament).”

The Orange enters on a four-game losing streak to the ACC’s top four teams and reached its boiling point in the regular-season finale, surrendering a seven-point edge in the final 70 seconds in the loss to the Hurricanes.

Syracuse fell to 3-6 in games decided by five points or less, a mark that does not include an 88-79 overtime loss to North Carolina on Feb. 28. The Orange is 1-6 in its last seven such games.

Florida State, meanwhile, has won six games by a single point this season, including a 5-0 showing in ACC games with a one-point margin.

The Seminoles are the first team in ACC history to win their first five league games decided by exactly one point and have also won an NCAA-record 13 straight overtime games, including two this year.

ACC Tournament bracket: Full TV schedule, scores, results for 2022 men's basketball tournament | Sporting News )TSN; Al-Khateeb)

The 2022 ACC Tournament will, in some senses, mark the end of a long and prosperous era in the conference. If you support the Blue Devils, that is.

Yes, the 2022 ACC Tournament marks the final time Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski can earn yet another conference title to his already-significant collection. A win in this tournament would be his 16th while head coach at Duke. It's also worth mentioning that Duke would collect its 22nd conference title with a conference tournament win — five without Krzyzewski leading the way.

Luckily for Krzyzewski, his team, which secured the No. 1 seed of the tournament, looks to be the team to beat in what is an overall weak slate of ACC teams. That said, the Blue Devils' storybook regular season ending was denied after North Carolina beat them 94-81 in Coach K's last game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Will Krzyzewski use that to fuel a potential rematch with the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament en route to another conference title? Will the Tar Heels use their win over the rival Blue Devils to launch themselves up several seeds? Or will another team come in and spoil both teams' bid for a title?

Here is a complete guide to the 2022 ACC men's basketball tournament, including a full TV schedule, seeds, odds and more for every game on the road to March Madness.

Few U.S. cities are more Ukrainian than Syracuse. United here, they’ve joined the battle (PS; $; Eisenstadt)

Tetiana Strashivska tries not to cry. Her boyfriend is fighting on the frontlines in Kiev. Her big sister, Oksana, is in Ukraine, too.

It has been days since the 17-year-old has heard from either one.

“For five days I can’t do my job, can’t do my homework. I just cry,” Strashivska says, standing in a classroom at West Genesee High School. “My family, my life, is in Ukraine.”

If not for one choice, it could be her. Strashivska and thousands of other Central New Yorkers are tied tightly to Ukraine. Syracuse is the most Ukrainian big city in the most Ukrainian state in the nation.

Every advance of the Russian army, every bombing, every video of children fleeing is heavier here where the stakes are so high, so close to home.

New York has the highest Ukrainian population of any state and the Syracuse metro area is tied with Utica for the highest concentration of Ukrainians among all major New York metro areas, according to the census.

In Syracuse, you can do your banking in Ukrainian, worship in Ukrainian at four Ukrainian churches, and enroll your kids in Ukrainian dance and language classes.

There are 7,000 Ukrainians here. Many other Upstate rust-belt city make the top-50 list, too: Binghamton, Rochester, Buffalo, Hudson, Amsterdam, Elmira, Albany and Seneca Falls. Auburn is tied for first in the country when you look at smaller metros areas.

RELATED: Syracuse, Utica, Auburn are among the most Ukrainian areas in U.S.; NY leads all states (see list)

As the Russians advance deeper into Ukraine, these Upstate cities have seen frantic rushes to help and outpourings of public support for a community that has largely blended in until now.

In the small Sauquoit Valley school district outside Utica, one of the top scorers on the championship boys’ volleyball team draped himself in the Ukrainian flag when they won. I have more family there than here, he said.
