Girard and energized Syracuse offense run away from Virginia Tech - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

The Syracuse offense clicked on all cylinders for most of Wednesday night, powering them to an 82-72 home victory over Virginia Tech. The Orange (11-6, 4-2 ACC) came out of the break adding a strong defensive effort to that offense, holding the Hokies (11-6, 1-5) to just two field goals in the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the second half. That effort on both ends boosted SU to a 63-41 lead and allowed them to coast home from there.

While they were giving up just four points in that game-turning span of the second half, Syracuse also dropped a 20-spot on Virginia Tech. Joe Girard III had eight of his 15 second half points in that run and tallied a team-high 24 points.

Girard got plenty of support, as four other Orange players crossed the double digit barrier, led by Jesse Edwards’ 13 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Judah Mintz added a dozen points while Maliq Brown came off the bench to post his first career double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, five coming on the offensive end. Justin Taylor tacked on ten points to the SU effort.

Grant Basile led four Hokies in double figures by making 12-of-17 shots from the field as part of a game-high 26-point, ten-rebound outburst. Justyn Mutts, who had a triple-double when the two teams met last season, almost had a double-double with 21 points and nine assists. Lynn Kidd and Sean Pedulla each chipped in with ten points, but Pedulla, the top VT scorer, struggled to find the bottom of the net, finishing 3-of-15 from the field and 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Joe Girard III scored 24 points and Syracuse reserves combined for 26 points and the Orangemen beat Virginia Tech 82-72 on Wednesday night.

It was Girard’s 10th-straight game scoring in double figures. The Orange now are 8-2 in their last 10 following a three-game losing streak.

Syracuse (11-6, 4-2 ACC) led 47-37 at halftime, started the second half with a 12-2 run and remained ahead by double digits the rest of the way.

Sean Pedulla’s 3-pointer with 8:32 left before intermission gave the Hokies (11-6, 1-5) their last lead at 34-32 as Syracuse’s Justin Taylor made a 3 24-seconds later.

Jesse Edwards scored 13 points and Judah Mintz scored 12 for Syracuse. Reserve Maliq Brown scored 11 points and collared a career-high 12 rebounds for his first-career double-double and fellow backup Taylor scored 10.

Grant Basile scored 26 points on 12-for-17 shooting — one shy of tying his career-high 13 made field goals in game — and grabbed 10 rebounds for Virginia Tech. Justyn Mutts scored 21 points, Pedulla 10 and reserve Lynn Kidd 10.

The Hokies have lost five straight and are winless in four road games this season.

Syracuse basketball offers 5-star who is nation’s No. 1 PG in new rankings (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has entered the extremely crowded field for one of the country’s top high-school prospects in the junior class.

Per a tweet from scout Andrew Slater of Cerebro Sports, the Orange coaching staff has offered a scholarship to 2024 five-star point guard Boogie Fland, who plays high-school and AAU ball in New York state.

The 6-foot-3 Fland is a junior at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., which is the same school that former Syracuse basketball forward Alan Griffin attended.

In grassroots basketball, Fland runs with the Bronx, N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals in Nike’s EYBL league. All of the primary recruiting services rate him as five stars, and Fland checks in no lower than No. 16 nationally within the 2024 cycle.

The ‘Cuse coaching staff, as we recently discussed, is in search of its first commitment in the junior class.

Syracuse basketball faces extremely stiff competition for five-star point guard Boogie Fland.

According to recruiting services, Fland boasts around 30 scholarship offers at this juncture in his recruitment, and it’s a mighty impressive list of high-major college programs.

Syracuse Orange news: 5-star may join Elliot Cadeau, bracketology, more (itlh; Adler)

This week, 2024 five-star guard Ian Jackson from New York City, who was offered a scholarship by Syracuse Orange basketball last April, is taking an official visit to Arkansas, according to media reports.

That trip is the fifth and final junior-year official visit for the 6-foot-5 Jackson, who is a standout at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, N.Y. In grassroots basketball, he suits up for the Bronx, N.Y.-based Wiz Kids in the Adidas league.

Jackson, who per reports is said to be considering a possible reclassification into the 2023 cycle, is one of the highest-rated prospects in the 2024 class. A few days ago, he took an official visit to North Carolina, and his other junior-season trips were to Kentucky, Oregon and LSU.

I’ve come across several reports of late that suggest Jackson may make a commitment announcement in the near future. Kentucky is getting a lot of analyst buzz these days in his recruitment, but I wouldn’t count out the other teams that he’s visited, especially the Tar Heels.

At the end of December, UNC secured a verbal commitment from 2024 five-star point guard Elliot Cadeau, who had a top six that included the Orange before he picked the Tar Heels.

The 6-foot-1 Cadeau, out of the Link Academy in Branson, Mo., was offered a three-year, seven-figure name, image and likeness deal by businessman and top SU booster Adam Weitsman.

Weitsman also had previously reached out to Jackson and his camp to discuss his lucrative NIL opportunities.

Earlier this week, Jackson told high-school hoops analyst Alex Karamanos that he has a strong relationship with Cadeau, and that the two five-star players talk all the time. “If me and him play together, which there is a chance, that would be great,” Jackson said of Cadeau.

Syracuse men’s basketball: Center Peter Carey to take medical redshirt season (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

The Syracuse Orange will be without one of their centers for the remainder of the 2022-23 season. Peter Carey, one of the six freshmen to join this SU squad, underwent a procedure on his knee that will sideline him for the rest of the year. He had the same procedure done on his other knee in high school.

Head Coach Jim Boeheim made the announcement during last night’s postgame press conference.

Carey was seen on crutches during yesterday’s game. He has only made three appearances this season, recording three rebounds, an assist, a block, and seven fouls. He has not attempted a shot.

The injury leaves just Jesse Edwards and Mounir Hima at the center position. It also opens up some questions on the long-term stability of the group. We recently saw how knee injuries derailed the end of Bourama Sidibe’s Syracuse career, and we’d hate to see the same happen here.

UNC basketball braces to play without its leader, Armando Bacot. Who fills his shoes? (aol; Brown)

The last words North Carolina forward Armando Bacot said to coach Hubert Davis on Tuesday as he hobbled off the court after rolling his left ankle early in a 65-58 loss at Virginia, was that he’d make a quick return to the lineup.

“I just need to tie my shoe and I’ll be back out there,” Davis recalled Bacot saying.

Bacot did not return, and there is no word on how soon he’ll be able to get back into the lineup after leaving John Paul Jones Arena on crutches and wearing a compression sleeve covering his swollen ankle.

It’s not the same ankle he tweaked in the Tar Heels’ quadruple overtime loss to Alabama in the Phil Knight Invitational in November. That was his right ankle, which he also injured late in their Final Four win over Duke last season that left him with limited mobility and lift in the title game against Kansas.

As a freshman, he injured his left ankle on a similar rebound and putback against Ohio State on Dec. 4, 2019. Then-coach Roy Williams thought that by the look of Bacot’s swollen ankle that he’d be out for a while. But Bacot started and played 25 minutes in their very next game at Virginia on Dec. 8, 2019.

That he didn’t return Tuesday was the first indication to Davis that this injury could be serious.

“I know that he’s really in a lot of pain because of those situations throughout his career, he usually gets back out there,” Davis said.

A development group has proposed turning the former Moyer automobile factory at 301 Wolf St. in Syracuse into 56 apartments. The building was designed by famed Syracuse architect Ward Wellington Ward and erected in 1909. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

Apartments at old car factory among $150M in new North Side projects in the works (PS; $; Moriarty)

A development group is proposing to build 56 apartments in a former Syracuse car factory built more than 100 years ago and designed by famed Syracuse architect Ward Wellington Ward.

The group acquired the four-story building at 301 Wolf St. in December and has proposed building studio and one- and two-bedroom apartments on its upper three floors. The first floor would contain 6,000 square feet of commercial space.

The project is part of more than $150 million in development projects underway or proposed in the Washington Square area of the city’s North Side neighborhood.

Overall, those investments -- stretching from the Washington Square Park area to the former Maria Regina College and St. Anthony’s Convent on Court Street -- would add about 300 new apartments to the area. About half of those would be designated for senior housing.

Downtown Syracuse has seen many underutilized historic buildings rehabbed for residential use in recent years. The North Side has not seen the same degree of revitalization, but that could be changing.

The Wolf Street project and the Maria Regina site project just a few blocks away would alone create 224 housing units in the neighborhood and, together, represent $100 million in new development.

“This is a bellwether of new investment and opportunity on the North Side,” said Eric Ennis, Syracuse’s deputy commissioner of business development.

This latest investment would remake the car factory, which was built for the H. A. Moyer Automobile Co. at the northwest corner of Wolf and Park streets in 1909.

Harvey Moyer, Ward’s father-in-law, founded the company in 1876 to make carriages (it was originally named the H. A. Moyer Carriage Co.) and switched in 1908 to making automobiles. The company went out of business in 1915 after producing about 400 cars.
