Wildhack 1-on-1: A ‘Bittersweet’ meeting with Boeheim before the coaching change (podcast) (PS; podcast; Waters)
The day before the Syracuse basketball team’s final regular season home game, Jim Boeheim sat in SU athletic director John Wildhack’s office.
Boeheim’s 47th season as the head coach at his alma mater was winding down with the Orange’s record standing at 16-14. That night would begin a 20th anniversary celebration of Syracuse’s 2003 national championship team with festivities continuing through the weekend, including a special presentation at the next day’s game against Wake Forest at the JMA Dome.
It was there in that meeting that Boeheim told Wildhack he was ready to retire.
“It was in some ways kind of a bittersweet conversation,’' Wildhack said of the meeting. “Coach Boeheim has meant so much to this university; he’s meant so much to this community.’'
In his first one-on-one interview since the Syracuse coaching transition from Boeheim to Adrian Autry, Wildhack described his conversation with Boeheim during on appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast with Syracuse.com basketball reporter Mike Waters.
“It was a really good conversation,’' Wildhack said. “What I really respect about Coach Boeheim is every coach will say, ‘Hey, I really care about the program going forward.’ Every coach will say that. Jim Boeheim really does care deeply about this program, about this university. I’m thrilled he’s still part of the university; he’s still part of the athletics department. He’s going to help us in a number of ways. He’s going to help us raise money, which we need to do.’'
Wildhack said he has already seen Boeheim actively participating in his new role with the SU athletic department.
“The other day I walked by his office and our volleyball coach, Coach Bake (Bakeer Ganesharatnam), was in there talking to him for about 20 minutes, which is great,’' Wildhack said. “Jim has said, ‘I will talk to any coach. I’m available.’ Head coach. Assistant coach. You have a recruit. That type of thing. To have someone with the treasure of knowledge of information be so willing to share it so broadly, we’re pretty lucky to have him.’'
Boeheim retired in March after 47 years as Syracuse head coach. He recorded over 1,000 wins, guided Syracuse to five Final Fours and led the Orange to the 2003 NCAA championship.
Wildhack was asked if Boeheim, who had one year left on his contract, could have coached next season if he wanted to.
“The conversation we had was Jim was ready,’' Wildhack said. “Jim was ready to step down and retire and that’s the conversastion. You deal with the moment and you deal with the reality of the moment.’'

Cole Swider and Matt Morgan made clutch Sunday plays in the closing seconds of an NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas.
Both players, plus Buddy Boeheim, finished their 2023 Summer League action Sunday.
Swider, the 6-foot-9 forward who played one Syracuse basketball season, drained a free throw with .4 seconds left on the game clock to seal a 104-103 win for the Lakers over the Clippers. He was fouled as the Lakers were attempting to inbound the ball in a tied game.
The game was tied because of the 3-point shot Morgan made mere moments earlier.
With .4 seconds left and the Clippers trailing by 103-100, Morgan squared up on the left side of the arc and sank a 3-pointer to even things up.
Swider finished with 21 points, three rebounds and one assist in 30 minutes, 39 seconds. He was 7-for-11 overall and 5-for-9 from 3.
In the Las Vegas Summer League, he averaged 15.2 points in 28.4 minutes. He made 45.6% of his shots overall and 42.5% of his shots from the 3-point line. He also averaged 5.2 rebounds per game.
Announcers on Sunday referred to him as “Swiderman.” He played for the Lakers organization on a two-way contract last season.

Downtown Syracuse’s Party in the Square returns for 2023, with a shorter schedule (PS; $; Cazentre)
Party in the Square, a music-drinks-and-food event that debuted in 2021, returns to Clinton Square next week, but with a shorter schedule than in the past few years.
This year’s schedule calls for events on four consecutive Wednesdays — July 26, Aug. 2, Aug. 9, and Aug. 16. All events starts at 5 p.m. and feature live music, food trucks and beer and wine slushie stands.
In past years, Party in the Square started in early July and ran into September.
“It’s a lot of work to set up and take down,” organizer Mark DiGiorgio said, explaining one of the reasons for the shorter schedule this year. It also made it easier to get city approvals.
This year’s music headliners are Dark Hollow (July 26), Sophistafunk (Aug. 2), Little Queen (Aug. 9) and Sponge (Aug. 16). Each night also has opening acts.

Let’s go: LEGO fan event ‘BrickUniverse’ coming to Syracuse (PS; Herbert)
LEGO fans will be saying “let’s go” when a popular toy brick convention comes to Syracuse after previous stops elsewhere in Upstate New York.
BrickUniverse, a traveling LEGO fan expo, will bring its 2023 “Inspire Tour” to the New York State Fair’s Horticulture Building on Saturday, Oct. 28. The day-long event will feature professional LEGO artists, various exhibits and creations, and give attendees a chance to build their own LEGO masterpiece or find rare and new LEGO sets.
General admission prices start at $15.12 (including fees) through Eventbrite and brickuniverseusa.com; tickets are required for all children 5 and older and all adults, including parents. Admission is free for children 4 and under when accompanied by a paid adult.
