Welcome to St Patrick's Day!

Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick"), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick(c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by theCatholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland),[4] the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland,[3] and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.[5] Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.[6] Christians also attend church services[5][7]and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.

Vaccaro, UNCW Living the Dream (standardspeaker.com; Bellino)

Mike Vaccaro has been interested in sports for as long as he can remember.

Some of his earliest memories include attending Hazleton High School games with his father. So it was only natural for the lifelong sports fan to pursue a career in sports.

Today at 12:10 p.m. fourth- seeded Duke begins its national title defense when it takes on No. 13 North Carolina-Wilmington in the round of 64 of March Madness. When the opening tip is thrown in Providence, R.I., Vaccaro will be right there calling the action as the radio voice of UNC-Wilmington.

“The matchup is pretty good. This isn’t the same Duke team that won the national championship last year,” Vaccaro said. “Hopefully, it’s a good game to broadcast.”

The Hazleton native didn’t just fall into this dream job that will see him calling a game that includes Mike Krzyzewski and Brandon Ingram, a future NBA lottery pick.

Vaccaro took the proper steps, working as a student-manger for both the Hazleton High and eventually Syracuse football teams. At Syracuse, Vaccaro studied at the famous Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Vaccaro took a sports broadcasting class during his senior year of college, where it was required to call high school games. That’s when he realized his passion for the broadcast industry.

Man in Critical Condition After Shooting at Apartment Complex in Eastwood (PS; Sturtz)

A man was badly injured when he was shot Wednesday night at an apartment complex on the city's East Side, Syracuse police said.

Just after 8:30 p.m. officers responded to the Aberdeen apartments at 3101 Burnet Ave. for reports of shots being fired and then a shooting with injuries.

When officers arrived they found a man in his 20s with a gunshot wound. Initial scanner reports indicated that a man had been shot in the head, but police did not say where the man was shot. Police also did not say if the man had been shot inside or outside the apartment complex.

The wounded man was rushed to the hospital. Police said he is in critical condition and that his injuries are life-threatening.

Police flooded the area after the shooting, taping off a section around the apartment complex. A Rural Metro ambulance remained in the parking lot behind the apartment complex for about an hour before leaving. A low tent with a wall was set up in the parking lot behind the complex.

Officers searched the block with flashlights and detectives pounded on doors, asking people if they had heard or seen anything.

Police said there was no suspect information. Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact 315-442-5222 or submit tips using the "SPD Tips" App.
