Welcome to National Mushroom Hunting Day!

May 17 shines the spotlight on a springtime treasure hunt that, if you're lucky, yields a tasty treat to eat and possibly a pretty penny in your pocketbook! Whether you are a mushroom lover, a chef in a high-end restaurant or fan of the great outdoors, it’s National Mushroom Hunting Day, an annual holiday created by freelance writer and mushroom lover, Jace Shoemaker-Galloway.

Each year, throngs of die-hard hunters head out to undisclosed locations in the forests, woods, orchards and/or fields armed with containers to capture the elusive and delicious prey - the wild mushroom. From morels, porcini and black trumpets to matsutake and chanterelles, foraging for mushrooms has become an annual tradition for many. For some, it can be a lucrative business. In fact, some folks even do it on a professional basis.

Raiders Name Olson to FB Coaching Staff (goraiders.com)

Dan Hunt completed his Colgate Football assistant coaching staff Tuesday with the announcement that Ben Olson accepted the outside linebackers position.

Olson arrives after one season at Syracuse under head coach Dino Babers. He served the Orange as a graduate assistant coach working with the defensive tackles and all special teams units.

xHe also worked alongside Syracuse assistant coach Nick Monroe and high school relations director J.B. Gerald '04, both of whom hold close Colgate ties. Monroe coached on the Colgate defensive staff from 2004-09, including the final season as co-defensive coordinator, while Gerald compiled more than 3,000 all-purpose yards a standout receiver and kick returner at Colgate from 2000-03.

"Ben has been coaching for a long time for someone his age," Hunt said. "He brings experience from FCS and FBS football. He worked at Syracuse with people that we respect, and comes highly recommended.

"His passion and energy are contagious, and I can't wait for him to start working with our players."

Foundation at Eastern Illinois
Olson began his coaching career at Eastern Illinois after he earned a full scholarship to play defensive line in 2009 but was medically disqualified because of shoulder injuries. He moved into the position of undergraduate assistant and was still there in 2012 when Babers was named head coach of the Panthers.

Rose-Hulman lured Olson to the Division III ranks to coach linebackers for the 2013 campaign. The Engineers went 7-3 and won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Olson then rejoined Babers for two successful seasons at Bowling Green in 2014 and 2015 before following the head coach to Syracuse.

Florida State Seminoles College Football - Florida State News, Scores, Stats, Rumors & More - ESPN (espn; Adelson)

Florida State defensive back Trey Marshall must sit out the first half of the season opener against Alabama because he was ejected for targeting against Michigan in the fourth quarter in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Coach Jimbo Fisher said ACC coaches are in favor of revising that rule so the punishment doesn't carry over into the following season. "I think that's crazy," Fisher said. "You get those red cards in soccer, they don't follow you from year to year."

Though the majority of ACC football coaches have been in favor of an early signing period, they wanted the date much earlier than December. So there are mixed feelings about the Dec. 20-22 period that was recently approved. "I always wanted it earlier to take a lot of pressure off kids and coaches," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said from the ACC spring meetings. "You're talking about getting ready for a bowl game and a playoff game and you're practicing all day, you're flying all night getting back at 2 in the morning, getting up at 6 in the morning, and going. You're going to be doing that for 2 1/2 , three weeks. … It's something I don't agree with but it is here to stay at least for another two years until they evaluate the process."

Notre Dame AD squashes rumors of football joining ACC as full-time member (orlandosentinel.cm; Murschel)

Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick says there is no truth to the rumor the school is in talks with ACC about becoming a full-time member in football.

"Absolutely not true,” Swarbrick said Tuesday during the ACC spring meetings. “We love the ACC but we love our relationship the way it is and there hasn't been any discussion.”

Rumors of possible informal talks with the league surfaced Monday as ACC spring meetings kicked off at Amelia Island.

Notre Dame joined the ACC in 2014 in all sports except football with the caveat being the team schedule at least five games a season against member schools. The Irish were previously were members of the Big East in all sports except football up until 2013.

The football program has remained fiercely independent thanks to the school’s lucrative television contract with NBC. While other schools in conferences negotiate TV agreements and split profits as a group, the Irish work directly with NBC on football coverage agreements and don’t split profits with any other school.

ACC Network talks heat up
ACC leaders have spent time discussing the progress on the launch of the league’s television network in partnership with ESPN.

The SEC didn’t consult me when setting its itinerary for the spring meetings, which will begin May 30 in Destin, Fla. If it had, I would have recommended bringing in ACC football coaches for an afternoon seminar.

SEC coaches obviously could use a few tips after last season when the ACC won 10 of 14 games between the two conferences, capped by Clemson’s last-second victory over Alabama for the national championship.

No one is disputing the SEC’s talent level. Coaching is another matter, though.

I’m not suggesting that Clemson’s Dabo Swinney has achieved Nick Saban-like status with one national championship, albeit at the expense of Saban’s revered defensive reputation. But when you line up SEC and ACC coaches, you can see how the ACC gained the upper hand last season. It’s outcoaching the SEC.

Suppose you had the pick of all the coaches from both leagues. Of course, you would start with Saban, who won a national championship at LSU before he won four more at Alabama. But where would you go after that?

You would go to the ACC, where Swinney and Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher each has won a national championship in the past four seasons. But there’s more to it than national championships.

In Swinney’s past five seasons at Clemson, the Tigers have won 60 of 69 games. In Fisher’s past five seasons at Florida State, the Seminoles are 59-9. Other than Alabama, no one is winning like that in the SEC.

And don’t forget about Louisville’s Bobby Petrino. In two coaching stints at Louisville, he’s 67-22.

Ranking the ACC's College Football Coaches for 2017 (athlonsports.com; Lassan)

The coaching depth and talent has improved significantly within the ACC over the last five seasons. The top of the league is headlined by Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Louisville’s Bobby Petrino, and a solid second tier is in place with Miami’s Mark Richt, Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente and Duke’s David Cutcliffe. But the real test of the league’s depth is at the back. Boston College’s Steve Addazio and NC State’s Dave Doeren take the last two spots in the rankings. That’s a pretty good illustration of how deep the ACC is in terms of coaching talent for 2017.

Success with any college football team starts with coaching. Even if a program doesn’t have the resources of the nation’s elite jobs, a good coach can elevate a program into national title contention. However, similar to any position on the field, statistics may not tell the full story when judging a coaching tenure.

2017 NYS Fair: LeAnn Rimes to play free Chevy Court concert on Three Dollar Thursday (PS; Tulloch)

The New York State Fair has booked LeAnn Rimes at Chevy Court for Thursday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m.

Her performance takes place on the second "Three Dollar Thursday," when admission to the fair costs $3.

The country star returns to the NYS Fair for the first time since 1998, when she performed at the fair's grandstand with Bryan White. She drew 16,623 people to the grandstand that year.

She also performed a sold-out show at the grandstand in 1997, with country singer Alan Jackson. Former music critic Mark Bialczak called that show the best of the whole year, with Rimes to thank: "The depth of her talent, from her booming voice to her bubbly personality, bloomed like a rose in full sun."
